The Children of the Goddess (Japanese: 女神の眷属 Goddess's family), also known as Nabateans, are a humanoid species living in Fódlan that can assume the appearance of dragons. They are the remnants of an ancient civilization known as Nabatea.

History

In antiquity, Sothis, the progenitor of all Nabateans, descended upon Fódlan from a faw away place, widely speculated to have originated from the Blue Sea Star.[1] Upon her arrival, she assumed human form and used her blood to create offsprings in her image. Sothis and her kin shared their knowledge and skills with the nearby humans and build an advanced and prosperous civilization which came to be known as Agartha. Over time, the Agarthans started to fight against themselves and brought destruction across Fódlan, all while wishing to overthrow the Nabateans that ruled over them as gods.[2][3] In time, the Agarthans fought directly against Sothis by launching multiple "pillars of light" towards various Nabatean cities which, while successfully destroyed, failed to deal direct damage to Sothis. In retaliation, Sothis unleashed a phenomenon described as a flood called "Despair", which destroyed the Agarthan civilization and forced the survivors to hide underground, where they plotted their revenge.[4] Afterwards, Sothis worked on reviving and healing the ravaged world, and upon doing so, fell into a long slumber in a location which came to be known as the Holy Tomb, leaving her children behind, able to resume their lives peacefully in the Nabatean city of Zanado.[5]

Some time after, the Agarthan survivors allied themselves with a thief named Nemesis and guided him into the Holy Tomb to slay the slumbering Sothis and acquire both her blood and bones; the Agarthans also helped him craft a powerful weapon from her remains: the Sword of the Creator. Seizing the opportunity, Nemesis gathered support from fellow humans and claimed he would liberate them from the rule of the Nabateans. With his newfound power and support, Nemesis's group then attacked Zanado, killed more Nabateans, acquired their blood (which would come to be known as Crests) and crafted the Heroes' Relics from their remains,[6][7] unaware that Seiros, the last child of Sothis, had survived the onslaught.

41 years before the formation of the Imperial Calendar, Seiros traveled across the land, allied herself with Wilhelm Paul Hresvelg, recruited other Nabateans survivors scattered across Fódlan (who later publicly became the Four Saints) and fostered the foundation of Wilhelm's Adrestian Empire with the sole intention of vanquishing Nemesis and his allies.[8] For her cause, Seiros performed multiple "miracles", founded the Church of Seiros and, along with her fellow "saints", granted Wilhelm and his men their blood, all while creating the narrative Nemesis (and by extension, the 10 Elites) had been previously blessed by the goddess Sothis to destroy "wicked gods" before they eventually became corrupted by power,[9] a measure Seiros took due to Nemesis's already existing reputation as a hero of humanity.[10] The clash between the Adrestian Empire and Nemesis's Liberation army eventually led to the War of Heroes in Imperial year 46, which came to an end 66 years later once Nemesis and his 10 Elites had been slain and the latter's descendants had been spared and absorbed into the Empire.

Afterwards, Seiros recovered the Heroes' Relics[11] and hid her mother's body in the Holy Mausoleum of Garreg Mach Monastery, built over the Holy Tomb in Imperial year 185. Seiros also faked her death and assumed control of the Church of Seiros with the intent of supervising Fódlan to maintain peace in the years to come, for which she concealed the existence of the Nabateans and the origin of the Heroes' Relics[12] and temporarily halted the technological advancement of Fódlan by banning multiple discoveries.[13] Meanwhile, the other Nabateans who aided Seiros in the War of Heroes hid themselves from the outside world.

The most prominent physical characteristic Nabateans have compared to humans is their ears, which are longer and pointier than their human counterparts; due to this, most Nabateans hide them in their hair when amongst humans to avoid standing out. Another notable characteristic is their green hair, though this trait in particular is not strictly exclusive to their kin.

The lifespan of Nabateans vastly exceeds that of humans, extending well into periods of hundreds of years with little visible aging. Nabatean remains can also last through long periods of time and can be used to craft powerful weapons, which require their bearer to have compatible blood (usually from the Nabatean themself) to avoid being hurt and even unwillingly transform into a Demonic Beast; however, Maurice of the 10 Elites was transformed by unknown means and causes into a Demonic Beast despite possessing a compatible crest.

A Nabatean's blood can grant humans power and long lives through blood transfusions. While this power can be passed down to their descendants for indefinite generations, the amount of power inherited can wildly vary and only the first generation of bearers have their lifespan extended.

After being subjected to enough damage or expending enough stamina, Nabateans may enter an extended hibernation to heal their wounds. Depending on the case, this process can last from just a few years to more than a hundred.

The Nabateans boast the power to transform themselves into dragons and can conserve this form without issues nor any need of external tools like a Dragonstones. Their transformed state can wildly vary in appearance, but it usually contains reptilian features and have the Nabatean's heart, their Crest Stone, appear visibly on their foreheads. It is suggested that this ability has drawbacks however, as overusing their powers or attempting to transform while in a weakened state or with heavy injuries can drive them berserk, as demonstrated by Rhea in Silver Snow Chapter 21. It is possible for a Nabatean to lose the ability to transform into a dragon altogether by unknown means.[14]
