“ | ...Stealing's the only way I could live. I'm an orphan. | ” | — Chad to Hugh in a support conversation. |

Chad (Japanese: チャド Chad) is a character in Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade. He first appears in Chapter 3. He is a thief from an orphanage in Araphen, along with Lugh and Raigh. After Bern destroyed his home, he sets off to seek revenge.
Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
Role
Chad is a child from an orphanage in the march of Araphen. According to the artbook, Chad comes from Sacae; given his appearance, he is most likely of mixed blood – his origins are never mentioned in the game. In the orphanage, he became good friends with a younger boy, Lugh.
Once Bern started invading other countries, the orphanage had trouble to meet ends, so Chad, being the oldest child, felt responsible for them. However, he seems to have been deemed as too young to be hired for any kind of job, so he ended up resorting to thievery.[1] His life changes when Bern and its Dragon Knights attack Araphen Castle, where the Lycian League was holding a meeting; the father in charge of the orphanage is killed by Bern's soldiers and the orphanage itself is burned down. After deciding to take revenge on Bern, Chad finds the Pheraen army and joins it, offering his skills as a thief for the rest of the war.
During the battle on Araphen, Chad comes across Lugh, who followed him to the battlefield. Although Chad tries to persuade Lugh to go back with the other children, at the end he seems happy to fight alongside his best friend. In the Western Isles, Chad finds Lugh's disappeared twin brother, Raigh. When informed of the orphanage's fate, Raigh decides to join Roy's army, much to Chad's surprise.
Once Bern is defeated and the war is over, Chad quits thievery and helps orphans across the whole continent.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Chad is a level 1 Thief who joins in Chapter 3 of The Binding Blade. As the thief with the earliest join time in the game, Chad has exclusive stealing utility early on.
Between chapters 3 and 8, Chad can get many useful items from chests. These items include a Halberd, a Silver Lance, a Goddess Icon and a Killer Axe. Chad can also get plenty of gold from the chests without items. In Chapter 7, the player can buy Door Keys from a vendor, but before then, using Chad is the only way to open chests.
Outside of opening chests and stealing items from enemies, Chad cannot do much. He is definitely not a good combat unit. Even though his growths are among the best in the game, his base stats are abysmal. His speed is his only good base stat, high enough to prevent enemies from doubling him. Yet even so, Chad is so frail that enemies can kill him in one hit. In Hard Mode, enemy axe users in the early game deal enough damage to one-shot Chad from full HP. While he has weapon triangle advantage over the inaccurate axe users, this is still a problem.
Having such poor base stats makes Chad difficult to use in combat. Even if his incredible growths make him better at it, he will still be worse than dedicated combat units. Moreover, thieves in The Binding Blade cannot promote. Chad cannot gain levels after reaching level 20 and he receives no promotion bonuses. This makes Chad even worse at fighting, because other units – and enemies – will surpass him at some point. Considering these circumstances, training Chad is a waste of time. He was never meant to be a combat unit.
Chad does not make a good support partner, either. Chad is often stealing items in certain sections of a map. None of Chad's support partners are thieves, so sending them with him to open chests is pointless. And if Chad's support partner is not with him, neither can gain support bonuses. This renders building supports with Chad almost pointless. The only time when their bonuses would be useful is a time when there are no items to steal. In that scenario, Chad can stay near his partner. But in that case, Chad is taking up a deployment slot of another unit likely better than him. Chad is not good at anything except stealing, so deploying him on a map with no stealables is a waste.

Personality and character
Being the oldest child in the orphanage where he grew up, Chad became a serious person, who feels it is his duty to care for the other children.[2] He knows that thievery is not good, but he knows there is no other option for him, too.[3] He is also very aware of his social status, calling Raigh out on his disrespectful behavior.[4] Yet Chad still has childish traits, as Lugh points out; he seems to be really happy when eating,[5] and embarrassed when doing good actions. He is also uncertain of the bonds between him and Lugh; as Lugh has a twin, Chad confesses he always felt a little left out.[6] He was not a good student, but his drawing skills were always praised by the father in charge of the orphanage.[7]
Chad's grudge against Bern is handled in his supports with Elen. At first he is grateful for Elen's help, but when she tells him that she is from Bern, Chad shuts her off. After some time, Chad tells her his story and admits that he had to rethink his views on Bern's people.[8]

Raigh: You think I care?!
Chad: P-pipe down! Don't be so loud! That Merlinus guy'll be after us again!
Raigh: You're afraid of that old geezer, aren't you?
Chad: Well, sure. He and Lord Roy are nobles.
Raigh: Ha ha. Little Chad bows down to nobles now, does he?
Chad: Laugh if you like. But let me say this. Nobility don't like to be opposed. Lord Roy doesn't seem like he would anger too easily, but I don't know about the others." — Chad and Raigh's C support, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade - ↑ "Chad: Wow, baked tarts! Where'd you get these?

Lugh: Don't be ridiculous! You're family to me, just as much as Raigh is!

The drive to avenge Poppa and protect all the orphans... That was my purpose in life. It felt just!
