“ | If you assign someone to a task that he is naturally not good at, he will waste his ability. You must never think that everyone works in the same way. | ” | — Cecilia, to Lilina about Roy's ill suit for magic |
---|
Cecilia (Japanese: セシリア Cecilia) is the Mage General of Etruria in the era of the Disturbance of Bern, succeeding the title from Lord Pent of Reglay following his retirement. A teacher and mentor to Roy and Lilina during their studies in Ostia, she alone of the three Etrurian generals escaped from the coup d'état of the Revolutionaries and led a resistance against the traitors Roartz and Arcardo, later allying with Roy to liberate Etruria and beyond.
Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
Role
Cecilia is the host of the Tutorial, which depicts one of her classes in Ostia teaching Roy, Lilina and Wolt the basics of Fire Emblem series combat gameplay through a mock battle.
Following Roy's recapture of Ostia from Legance, Cecilia and Perceval arrived there in response to an earlier request by Roy for Etrurian assistance and protection in Ostia;[1] there, they confronted Narcian and his forces, who were attempting to threaten Roy into surrendering Ostia, and drove them away. Afterward, Cecilia and her army took over the defense of Ostia from future Bern aggression, and Roy left Guinivere with Cecilia while he was deployed to the Western Isles.
When Roartz and Arcardo initiated their coup d'état, Cecilia was the only Etrurian general to escape their grasp and avoid being cowed into their service, taking Guinivere with her. She founded the Loyalists, a resistance faction, and successfully led them in fighting the Revolutionaries across Etruria, until the combined efforts of the Etrurian generals serving the Revolutionaries and their Bernese allies drove Cecilia out of Etruria and cornered her in a castle in Missur.[2] She and the surviving Loyalists successfully defended against a joint Bern/Revolutionaries siege for a time, until King Zephiel himself arrived and effortlessly defeated her, seizing the castle and leaving it in Narcian's care.
Following her defeat, Cecilia was imprisoned within the castle on Narcian's orders, his intent being to avenge his "humiliation" in Ostia at her hands. In the prison, her wounds were healed by fellow captive Sophia, who told her of Arcadia and that she knew Roy would be coming to help them. When Roy recaptured the castle from Bern, Cecilia introduced him to Sophia and the two joined his army, travelling first to Nabata to defeat the Bern forces hunting for Arcadia.

Personality and character
As a teacher, Cecilia is a believer in the importance of talent in learning magic, and so refrained from teaching Roy magic on the grounds that his lack of talent for it compared to Lilina would cause him distress when his efforts to keep up yielded no results.[3] She is persistent and stubborn, particularly when someone is attempting to deceive her, as with her attempts to convince Elphin to stop lying about his true identity;[4] her insistence on explanations from him was observed by Elphin as being "scary".[5] She tends to put too much focus on the individual battles and sometimes fails to see the broader picture, such as forgetting that keeping a slower pace on the battlefield is to the detriment of helping those in need further down the line.[6]
Cecilia was specifically nominated by Pent for the Mage General post following his retirement, but when she first took over the role she had to contend with sexism in the army, as many of her competitors and subordinates doubted her aptitude for the role solely based on her gender. In response to this mistreatment, she spent all of her spare time studying in a bid to prove her worth to those who doubted her, and eventually won everyone's trust and support.[7]

- ↑ "I am Perceval, Knight General of Etruria. Yesterday, we were informed by Mage General Cecilia that Ostia had requested Etruria's protection. Therefore, Ostia is to become a protectorate of Etruria, as of now." — Perceval, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
- ↑ "Cecilia escaped from Aquleia with Guinivere. Forming an anti-coup d'etat militia called the Loyalists, she traveled around Etruria, fighting the Revolutionaries. However, the Revolutionaries had Bern on their side. With King Mordred taken hostage, Great General Douglas and Knight General Perceval were also forced to join the Revolutionaries. With these powerful allies, the Revolutionaries slowly began to push the Loyalists out of Etruria. Eventually, the Loyalists were driven into an old castle on the Missur Peninsula." — Opening narration of Chapter 13, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
- ↑ "Cecilia: You see, practice isn't enough to master a school of magic. You need talent, and that can't be obtained through mere training. What would Roy think if there was a person with that talent right near him? He's working as hard...no, probably even harder than that person, but still he's lagging far behind. What would he feel like?
Lilina: That person... Is it me?
Cecilia: People have things that they're naturally good at. It was clear that Roy wouldn't do very well with magic, so I figured that he would be better off mastering the sword.
Lilina: ......
Cecilia: Lilina, you will eventually lead Ostia's future. Remember this... If you assign someone to a task that he is naturally not good at, he will waste his ability. You must never think that everyone works in the same way." — Cecilia and Lilina, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade - ↑ "Cecilia: ...... You insist on playing dumb, do you? Then I have an idea as well.
Elphin: ......
Cecilia: Let me see your right shoulder that you are conveniently hiding with your long hair. If you are but a simple bard as you say, then there wouldn't be a scar from taking a powerful magic hit, now, would there? May I have a look...?
Elphin: ...... Persistent, aren't you, Cecilia?" — Cecilia and Elphin, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade - ↑ "Elphin: Cecilia... How much longer are you going to stay upset?
Cecilia: I understand why you were hiding your identity from me, prince.
Elphin: Thank you, Cecilia.
Cecilia: But, your Majesty, you told Lord Douglas. Did you not have enough trust in me to let me know as well?
Elphin: That's not what I intended...
Cecilia: I shall let it go for now, your Majesty. I will be looking forward to your explanation after the war.
Elphin: ...Scary, as always.
Cecilia: Of course. You have saddened not only me, but your people as well. Please show our people that you are safe, your Majesty. Please..." — Elphin and Cecilia, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade - ↑ "Cecilia: Rushing will only bring failure.
Roy: I'm not rushing. I won't try anything impossible. But we must move as quickly as we can.
Cecilia: Why?
Roy: The quicker we move, the more people in need we can reach. Right?
Cecilia: ...Yes, that's true.
Roy: We are fighting to win this war. However, if we focus only on winning and ignore those people needing help, is that a true victory?
Cecilia: ......
Roy: Oh, I'm sorry... I shouldn't be so outspoken. Have I angered you?
Cecilia: No, I'm glad. I was too focused on winning the battle. You are already becoming a great leader." — Cecilia and Roy, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade - ↑ "Douglas: The former Mage General wanted you as his successor... But it looked like you had many enemies at first.
Cecilia: Yes, I won't deny that. Being a female general was enough to turn people against me. I spent most of my earlier days fighting against prejudice.
Douglas: To be honest, I was unsure of your abilities as first, too.
Cecilia: Yes, I know. Every time you told me, 'You're weak, you don't know how to fight,' I would bury my nose in my spell books all night.
Douglas: That's just like you. Well, it's no wonder you were holding a grudge against me.
Cecilia: Oh? I never held a grudge against you, Lord Douglas. Do you remeber that time?
Douglas: What time?
Cecilia: The day I enlisted, the other young generals were teasing me about my gender. But you defended me, saying, 'She's stronger than you all.'
Douglas: ...I'm afraid I don't remember.
Cecilia: That's all right. I remember perfectly." — Douglas and Cecilia, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade - ↑ Behind the Name Cecilia
