Carp Streamer |
Based on the koinobori (literally, "carp streamer"), a type of wind sock decorated to resemble a carp which is traditionally flown by Japanese households on the national holiday Children's Day. They are a traditionally flown in a set of at least three: a big, black one to represent the father of a family, a smaller, red one to represent the mother, and additional smaller streamers in other colors to represent the family's sons. They are flown as a wish that the children will grow up strong, and the carp is used because Japanese traditions say that it is a spirited fish which never gives up. |
