Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade

Pardon me! I was speaking with an old sailor a few moments ago. He told me that you're planning to travel to Valor. Is that so? Really? And that's why you're playing tag with these pirates? ......I see. In that case, would you mind if I joined you? My name is Canas. I'm a scholar of sorts...
— Canas

Canas (Japanese: カナス, Canas) is a shaman from Template:FE7b. As the only dark magic user available in the game aside from Athos, Canas travels with the group in order to expand his knowledge of the Dread Isle, and subsesquently, dragons. Referencing how Blazing Blade is supposed to be a prequel to Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade, Canas is a son of Niime and the father of Hugh, two characters appearing in The Binding Blade.

Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade

Role

Pre-game

Canas is from Ilia, and is one son of the famed Mountain Hermit Niime, whom he inherited his dark magic skills from, albeit under strict training from her. In addition, Canas has three brothers, all of whom are also shamans. All three, however, eventually had their dark magic take control of their bodies, rendering them in an almost comatose state; Canas himself notes that it is likely he himself will end up like them if he continues to study dark magic, but he continues because of his own curiosity, aware that his own curiosity may cause the end of him.

At the start of The Blazing Blade, Canas is stated to be married to an anima magic user, to his mother's initial chagrin, and he has an infant son named Hugh; this son, however, is shown in The Binding Blade to instead use anima magic instead of his father's dark magic. Canas's wife is also stated to have had a sister with the given name Iris; while having heard that this sister is deceased, this given name is shared with a member of Nino's own family, her mother's. While noting that Iris is a rather common name, the fact that Canas's wife is an anima magic user and that Nino's family was made up of powerful sages suggests that Canas might be an uncle by marriage to Nino.

In-game

Canas first appears in Chapter 16x/17x: The Port of Badon. Shortly after Eliwood and his allies engage with Fargus and members of his pirate brigade, Canas appears in order to offer his skills to the lords, due to wanting to visit the Dread Isle; similar to the party, he is also unable to find passage to the island. After helping the lords receive passage to the island, he stays with them to the very end in order to continue learning about areas outside of Ilia.

Post-game

As Canas is explicitly stated to be deceased by Niime in The Binding Blade, Canas has no paired endings, and his sole ending states that he and his wife were killed trying to stop a snowstorm in Ilia. Owing to his death, this leads to his son, Hugh, getting raised by Niime.

Analysis

With the exception of Athos, Canas is the player's only potential dark magic user in all of the game, and if the player wants to use dark magic, Canas is their only true choice to do so. Of the magic units in the game, Canas is relatively well-rounded, with solid growths in HP, magic, and resistance, as well as among the highest defense growths in the game for a magic user (25%, second to only Pent's 30%). As a result of this defence growth, as well as high resistance (45%) and HP (70%) growths, Canas is one of the more durable magic characters the player can get; in addition, the Nosferatu tome gives Canas the ability to regain lost HP whenever he inflicts damage, thus aiding his durability. Canas's primary stumbling block, however, is his poor speed. At only 35%, it is among the lowest speed growths in the game, and this is only exacerbated by the relatively heavy weight of most dark magic tomes, along with an average 7 constitution likely causing speed reductions of some capacity, even with Flux; dark magic's ultimate tome in the game, Gespenst, is also notoriously heavy, with a weight of 20, giving Canas an entire 12 point deduction from his speed and skill stats if the player chooses the wield the tome. As such, it is generally recommended that the player uses a Speedwings on Canas where possible.

However, Canas's usefulness is due to the fact that he is the only potential wielder of Luna in the game, except for Athos. Owing to a good magic growth (45%) and a high base magic of 10, Canas has potential to reach his 28 magic cap, and compounded with Luna, allows him to deal a guaranteed 28 damage to all enemies, including Nergal and the Fire Dragon; even outside of these two bosses, multiple bosses prior to the two, such as Ursula, Sonia, Limstella, and others can be easily defeated with the tome.

Personality and character

Canas is demonstrated to be a young man almost completely absorbed in improving his intellect through constant study; in almost all of his support conversations, characters often approach Canas while he is in the midst of reading a tome of some sort, to the chagrin of some. In his only supports where he isn't immediately seen studying, he instead directly asks questions to Renault about the truth behind morphs. True to being a scholar, Canas takes his work very seriously, expressing exasperation when Vaida's mount eats one of his books [1], and he also expresses great interest upon meeting the Mage General of Etruria, Pent[2] At his most passionate, Canas is shown shedding a few tears when he intends to give Nino a book on the hero Roland[3], and upon learning that the mage is illiterate, he gladly teaches her how to read[4].

Owing to being almost completely absorbed in his studies, it is demonstrated that Canas can also sometimes act absent-minded to his surroundings and to the needs of other people. In his supports with Pent, Canas is found looking around the area for a book he has misplaced, in an minor example [5]. A more telling example, however, is seen in his supports with the wyvern rider Vaida. In their A support, Canas attempts to give Vaida a book about "wyvern-mounted combat" and proceeds to give an accurate description of how they operate, as well as his desires to see one in real life, all while seemingly failing to notice that Vaida herself is a wyvern rider[6], and that her mount Umbriel has actually eaten one of his books right in front of him [7]. Socially, Canas can also prove absent-minded; in supports with Nino, the shaman has to be told by the mage that he must spend more time with his infant son Hugh, owing to the latter's potential loneliness.[8] In his supports with Bartre, Canas also accidentally insults the fighter when he asks for a book; knowing that Bartre is not as intelligent as himself, Canas amusingly asks the warrior if he is going to eat it. [9]

In The Binding Blade, Niime provides a different characterisation for Canas than seen above; in her support conversations with Hugh, Niime notes that Hugh's penchance for wanting to have a steely exterior is similar to how Canas supposedly acted, though the shaman shows no such mannerisms in The Blazing Blade. Despite this, she does note that Hugh's inherent kindness does appear to come from his father, which more closely meshes with Canas in the game.

Quotes

Death quotes

Ah, what a shame. There was so much more that I wanted to learn...
— Canas
Mother... Forgive me... Take care... of... Hugh...
— Canas (finish the game 8 times (all versions), data transfer from Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade (Japanese version only)[10]

Final Chapter: Light quote

Let this battle be forgotten by history... That is all I ask.
— Canas

Battle History quotes

Mm... This is the best outcome, is it not?
— Canas, with S or A rank
I see. No better than average, are you?
— Canas, with B or C rank
You seem to lack even basic skills.
— Canas, with D or E rank

Tactician quotes

Actually, this is quite fascinating. <Tactician>, the Nabata wasteland is a bit of a paradise to magic adepts. Stories tell of the many magical artifacts lost in these sands. I'll keep my eyes open. Of course, I'll be fighting as well.
— Canas, in Chapter 22: Living Legend, Eliwood's story

Other appearances

Canas appears in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance's official art gallery and Fire Emblem Cipher.

Trivia

  • Canas is one of three characters, along with Ninian, Hawkeye, and Lyn, to have two different death quotes. However, wheras the other three have had known criteria for their alternative death quotes, the criteria for changing Canas's death quote was only recently discovered. To get this alternate quote to appear, Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade's playthrough counter must be at eight or above. In the Japanese version, a Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade save transfer with the game completed to at least chapter 22 should also make the quote appear, though this is not possible in international releases.[10]
  • Canas and Athos are the only playable dark magic users in Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade.
