Come on! Turn that frown upside down. Know what you have then? A smile! That's what my father taught me. If you can't smile? Stand on your head! That'll turn your frown upside—

— Soleil
|
Bright Smile (Japanese: 危機に咲く笑顔 A Smile Blooming Crisis) is the twenty-first paralogue chapter in Fire Emblem Fates. As a paralogue chapter, its events are not integral to the game's main storyline and can be done at the player's leisure. The chapter is unlocked after both clearing chapter 12 in Conquest or clearing chapter 17 in Revelation, and have Laslow married.
In this chapter, Laslow's daughter, Soleil, leads her underlings out of her Deeprealm and into a walled town where they repel a wave of bandits. The bandits return in greater numbers, to which Corrin and his/her army must assist Soleil's band in this second defense.
Plot
- Main article: Bright Smile/Script
Within the confines of a walled city in Nohr between Windmire and Castle Krakenberg, we catch up to a woman named Soleil and a mercenary celebrating beating back a wave of bandits when one of their ruffians returns to the scene with reinforcements; as the mercenary notes the bandits' numbers and states that their own numbers can't take them on, to which Soleil asks the mercenary to smile as the ruffian orders the bandits to attack. Cutting to a different part of the area, Laslow notes the area is calm and contemplates resting in the area when Silas states that he witnessed the town watch chasing off bandits; Silas states that the bandits have returned in greater numbers and states that the town is about to get sacked, to which Laslow agrees. Silas brings up a skilled mercenary with a perpetual smile leading the town watch, to which Laslow starts to wonder who the mercenary is--then realizes that, based on the perpetual smile, that the mercenary is his daughter, Soleil. Silas states that he can't believe Soleil would be in the area as she should be in her Deeprealm, but Laslow states that Soleil is capable is her own woman who's gathered a band of mercenaries, but also states that they shouldn't be in the area; as Laslow leaves the scene, Silas tries to ask him if Soleil really is his daughter and also notes that they could be headed into a trap. Preparations take place at this point; the battle begins once preparations are complete.
Should Laslow speak with Soleil, the two of them confirm each other to be all right, after which Soleil states that she's started to get worried and can't bring herself to tell her underlings; Laslow states that, in situations where one can't smile, that one should laugh instead, a line that gets Soleil smiling again. The player may now control Soleil at this point.
Once the battle ends, Laslow and Soleil talk about how amazing they were in the battle, after which Silas suggests that they let Soleil join up with the rest of Corrin's army to make use of her smile; Soleil asks Laslow if she can travel with the army, to which Laslow agrees after some thought and encouragement from Silas. We then watch as Soleil receives a reward from a local girl and starts to flirt with her, even getting an agreement to go on a stargazing date; Silas asks Laslow if he really noticed Soleil scoring her stargazing date, to which Laslow states that Soleil has good taste in both women and men and asks Silas if he has a problem with it, to which Silas denies. As Soleil returns to Laslow and Silas, Soleil and Laslow start talking about how little time they'll have to chat; Silas asks Laslow how he ended up with someone like Soleil for his daughter, to which Laslow states that he's fortunate to have someone like Soleil in his life.
Summary
Soleil, Laslow's daughter, repels a bandit attack while on watch. The defeated bandits return, and in much larger numbers. A tough battle lies ahead.

Character data
Note: The returning characters list only those recruited by the time this chapter can first be unlocked (after completing chapter 12 in Conquest or after completing chapter 17 in Revelation). In Conquest, Felicia is only a returning character if Corrin is male, while Jakob is only a returning character if Corrin is female; in Revelation, both Felicia and Jakob are available regardless of Corrin's gender. As a paralogue chapter, there is no set timeframe in which the chapter must be taken on; thus, it is possible to have recruited more characters than the above by the point the chapter is started.
Item data
There are no event tiles during the events of the chapter. When returning to the area for skirmishes in Revelation, the following event tiles appear:
- Column 11, row 15: East of the western horizontal wall, four squares west of the player deployment position in the middle of the bridge
- Column 21, row 11: Six squares east of the northeasternmost player deployment position, on the western of a clump of two woods tiles
There are no Dragon Veins in this chapter.
Level scaling data
This chapter's enemy and NPC units are subject to level scaling mechanisms that increase their levels as the player makes progress along the main story path. The tables below show the differences between the initial levels of the units and the levels of the units at each particular main story path chapter position. Initial unpromoted units who reach an effective level of 21 will become promoted units of level (effective level -20) unless otherwise stated.
