Appearance(s)

Boyd (Japanese: ボーレ Bole) is a member of the Greil Mercenaries. His brash character contrasts that of his brothers, Oscar and Rolf. He carries a friendly rivalry with Ike, and is a valuable fighter and ally. Boyd often makes poor choices, but is a loving brother and friend. His relationship with Mist is confusing, but he seems to have special feelings for her.

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance

Role

Boyd first appears in Mercenaries, the prologue chapter of Path of Radiance as one of the Greil Mercenaries. Greil suggests that Boyd be Ike's sparring partner. In the chapter, to explain the gameplay of the Fire Emblem series, Ike is pitted against Boyd with a Trainer sword. After Boyd is defeated, he leaves the map and Greil comes instead. When the battle ends, Boyd refuses to admit that he lost fairly.

Boyd comes with Ike in Chapters 1 and 2, helping as a sort of rival to him, along with his calmer brother Oscar, a Lance Knight. In Chapter 5, he votes in favor of keeping Princess Elincia safe. If he is still alive by Chapter 9, he scolds his brother Rolf for trying to fight when he is only a child. Still, Rolf resists and joins as an Archer.

In Chapter 13, Boyd, Oscar, and Rolf discuss a new technique in an info conversation. They try to plan out a new powerful attack that they can do together, but their meeting does not seem to be very productive.

In Chapter 19, in another info conversation, if Boyd and Oscar are promoted and Oscar chose to use bows as his weapon, they continue planning their special attack. However, Ike comes over and they try to keep it a secret. After this conversation, the three brothers can perform a Triangle Attack.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Boyd is the only playable fighter/warrior in the game, and is available for effectively the entire game. He is one of the more powerful earlygame units thanks to axes (powerful and 1-2 range), but he struggles with doubling because he is significantly weighed down by even an Iron Axe. On the other hand, his offensive growths are solid, with excellent strength and skill growths and a decent speed growth, so he can start doubling reliably after only a few levels. Boyd is one of the best candidates for the early speedwings since it will let him double more enemies with his excellent strength. Long-term, he will consistently become one of the most powerful offensive units in the game, capping strength at level 20 on average and having a respectable skill and speed stat.

Although his earlygame durability isn't weak thanks to his high health, his defense base is mediocre and his defense growth is low so he will likely struggle with durability through midgame and endgame. He also lacks a mount, so he will not be able to keep up with other mounts. Still, very few units can match Boyd's offensive potential through the majority of the game.

When promoted, he gains access to Bows. This lets him triangle attack with Oscar and Rolf, but this is a novelty at best due to having to train two other units and giving Oscar Bows instead of Axes. Bows also give Boyd an option for effective flying damage, which complements his excellent strength, but this is heavily mitigated by ×2 weapon effectiveness and having E rank bows (i.e. can only use the weak Iron Bows).

Boyd starts with the Tempest skill, which often hurts him more than helps. It is highly recommended to remove it as soon as possible. Because Boyd has excellent health and lower defense, he benefits from HP-based skills such as Wrath and Resolve. On paper, using an Occult to teach Colossus seems effective because of his good constitution stat and his excellent strength and skill; however, this is often overkill because he usually has enough strength to deal enough damage anyways. Thus it is only recommended to teach Colossus if the player has an extra Occult that can't be used for more applicable skills such as Aether, Sol, and Luna.

Boyd has a fire affinity which gives an attack and accuracy boost, both useful for amplifying his good offense. Titania and her light affinity pairs well with Boyd due to shared availability, slight defense boost, and extra accuracy; however, she is mounted and Boyd is not. All of his other support partners (Mist, Brom, and Ulki) have water affinities, giving up to +3 attack and +1 defense.

Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn

Role

Boyd shows up alongside the rest of the Greil Mercenaries who were hired by Bastian to assist them in saving Lucia from execution in Crimea by Duke Ludeveck's troops. He then fights alongside the rest of the mercenaries in the Laguz Alliance against Begnion and Daein. Boyd then becomes part of the Silver Army who marches to the Tower of Guidance in Begnion to challange Ashera.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Boyd is one of two axe-wielding warriors in the game, and the only one on Ike's team. He has great bases in health, strength, and skill, which lets him do a lot of damage with each hit immediately. He has an excellent health, strength, and defense growth, and above-average skill and speed growth, so he will often become an excellent 1-2 range powerhouse past promotion, faces few survivability issues, and can hold his own through endgame.

His base speed is relatively low and he will struggle to double attack many enemies for early part 3. He will often grow out of this with his decent speed growth but it isn't high enough to reliably compensate for his low base speed before promotion. He also benefits significantly from a Path of Radiance speed transfer (though Path of Radiance Boyd doesn't cap speed on average) or a speedwing, though he may need both to double immediately. Boyd's biorhythm cycle heavily affects his accuracy, because he is at best or worst biorhythm for the majority of his turns. This high variance combined with using axes can make him arbitrarily become very unreliable.

Boyd can also use crossbows, giving him an extremely powerful 1-2 range against flying units (or if one gave him a Beast/Dragonfoe skill). However, there aren't many units in his chapters vulnerable to crossbows, nor are there many enemy beast/bird laguz to take advantage of. Since crossbows forgo his excellent strength, they are mostly outclassed by 1-2 range axes. He can also triangle attack with Oscar and Rolf, but this is anecdotal at best because it requires raising two other units, promoting Oscar, and an awkward positional set up.

Boyd has a fire affinity which gives him an attack and accuracy boost, both of which he appreciates (especially accuracy). Mia is a solid partner who shares availability and movement with Boyd, has another fire affinity, and appreciates the attack boost. Due to Boyd's low defense base, supporting with Ike is also a good option since Boyd benefits from extra avoid and Ike benefits from extra power and accuracy.

Quotes

Battle quotes

Are you sure you don’t need me to stay behind and watch your back?
— Boyd's escape quote in Path of Radiance.
Boyd: Shinon! I couldn't care less who you decide to work for... Heck, I'd hoped you were dead! But even so, Daein? You couldn't find anything better than this? What were you thinking?
Shinon: Haven't changed a bit, have you? You're still a mouthy piece of work. Listen up! Daein's a great place to work right now. They pay's great, and strength at arms is the only thing that determines class standing. You want to join me?
Boyd: Don't be ridiculous!
Shinoin: Well then, only one thing to do. Out of the goodness of my heart, I'll teach you how adults fight. And as far as payment goes... I'll take your life. How's that sound?
Boyd: Keep talking, Shinon! I'm gonna beat the obnoxious clean out of you.

— Boyd, when fighting Shinon in Chapter 18 of Path of Radiance.
Uh... Are you sure I shouldn’t be stationed in the rear?
— Boyd's escape quote in Radiant Dawn.

Death quote

Blast! I’m not... I’m not supposed to... Oscar... Rolf... Forgive...me.
— Boyd, in Path of Radiance.
No! I’m... This isn’t... Big brother... Rolf... I’m...so sorry...
— Boyd, in Radiant Dawn.
Ugh! They hit me good. I hate to say it, but I have to pull back!
— Boyd's retreat quote in Part 3 Chapter 13 of Radiant Dawn.
