Berkut was born to the younger brother of Emperor Rudolf I of Rigel, and as far as the public knew was first in line to inherit the Rigelian throne. His father died young, and his mother raised him harshly in order to become a man worthy of the throne. Berkut's mother died before he reached adulthood, so he was placed under the care of his uncle. According to Massena, captain of Rudolf's imperial guard, Rudolf genuinely loved Berkut and knew that keeping his son Albein Alm's existence secret would only hurt Berkut in the long run, but was forced to keep his silence for the sake of his plan to free Valentia from the influence of the degrading gods. During his time under Rudolf's care, Berkut met a minor noble named Rinea; the two quickly fell in love and became betrothed. | Berkut was born to the younger brother of Emperor Rudolf I of Rigel, and as far as the public knew was first in line to inherit the Rigelian throne. Berkut severely underestimated Alm, was defeated, and was forced to retreat. He begged Rudolf for a second chance, and was assigned to defend the border between Zofia and Rigel. As he prepared for his mission, the witch Nuibaba offered him a mirror containing Duma's power as a last resort in case things went wrong. At the border, despite his best efforts, he and Fernand were defeated. Berkut swallowed his pride and used the mirror, summoning powerful Terrors to aid him, but Alm managed to channel Celica's powers and dispel them. Berkut was again forced to retreat.

Growing increasingly desperate to prove himself to Rudolf and earn his birthright as the Rigelian heir presumptive, Berkut begged Rudolf to allow him to join the final defense of Rigel Castle, but was coldly rebuffed. Rudolf was killed in the battle, and the truth about Alm's origins as Rudolf's son and the true heir to the Rigelian throne came to light. The discovery that everything he ever knew and fought for was a lie shattered Berkut's mind, and he ended up in the basement of the Duma Tower after wandering in a daze. Rinea followed him down, and Berkut, consumed by his hatred of Alm, offered whatever Duma desired to grant him the power to exact his revenge. Duma claimed Rinea's soul as his price, and Fernand arrived just in time to discover what the newly empowered and maddened Berkut had done. Rinea was resurrected as a Witch, and mortally wounded Fernand. Berkut and Rinea awaited the arrival of Alm and his companions in the Temple. When Alm arrived, Berkut rebuffed his offer of friendship and attacked him, and Alm was forced to defeat both Berkut and Rinea. As he laid dying, Rinea's soul appeared and brought him back to his senses, and Berkut begged Alm to defeat Duma before succumbing to his wounds.

The normal variation of Berkut is one of the characters added to the game in the Bitter Enemies update, and was made available to players in the twelfth Grand Hero Battle, which initially ran from July 18, 2017 through July 25, 2017. A corrupted variation of Berkut, based on his boss appearance after sacrificing Rinea to Duma in Act 5, was first made available to be summoned by players on May 10, 2019 as part of the summoning event surrounding the launch of the A Home Unknown update. A performance-themed variation of Berkut was made available between the period of September 6, 2018 through October 7, 2018 as part of the summoning event surrounding the launch of the A Splendid Soiree update.

Berkut (Japanese: ベルクト Berkut) is a ranking member of the Rigelian army and the nephew of Emperor Rudolf. Berkut did not appear in Fire Emblem Gaiden and is a new character first appearing in Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia. He prizes his high social standing as the nephew of the emperor and a possible heir to the Rigelian throne.
Biography
During the war between Zofia and Rigel, Berkut served as a general in the Rigelian army. After the Zofian knight Fernand abandoned the Deliverance, Desaix allowed him to serve under Berkut's command. Berkut elected not to directly aid Desaix against the Deliverance, and he was defeated in battle. Later, Berkut and Fernand decided to ambush and fight Alm for their own entertainment.
Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia
Role
Berkut serves as one of the main antagonists of Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia. He is one of Desaix's benefactors, and he vies for the Rigelian throne by performing military duties.[2] He is fought as a boss three times during the game: first in the Forest Crossroads Battle, the third map of Alm's route in Act 3; second in the Border Battle, the first map of Alm's route in Act 4; and third in the Duma Temple midway through Act 5.

Fire Emblem Heroes
Role
There are three different variations of Berkut available to Heroes, all of which are tied to his storyline appearance in Echoes: Shadows of Valentia.
The normal variation of Berkut is notably the first character made available in a Grand Hero Battle to not only bear a passive skill that wasn't part of the game at launch, but also be the first character to bear a passive skill added in the same update as the character (in this case, Berkut is the first bearer of Water Boost).
