Azelle (Japanese: アゼル Azel) was a nobleman of House Velthomer of Grannvale, and the younger half-brother of its Duke Arvis. In Grann 757, he set out to join Sigurd in repelling the Verdane invasion of Grannvale, having heard of the threat to Edain of Yngvi by Verdane forces, along with his best friend, Lex of Dozel.
Biography
Azelle was one of the many illegitimate children of Duke Victor of Velthomer, and his mother was a maidservant to Victor's wife, Cigyun, who was a plain woman who had had a difficult childhood; Azelle was conceived as the result of drunken behavior by Victor, in what may have been a rape. When Victor learned of the maid's pregnancy, he violently attempted to drive the maid away, which Cigyun attempted to stop. Azelle was born just before Victor committed suicide and Cigyun disappeared. When Victor's legitimate son Arvis took the Velthomer throne, although he had the rest of Victor's conquests and illegitimate children exiled, he took Azelle and the maid in and treated them as his own family, although the maid died some ten years after this.[2]
Growing up among the nobility of Grannvale, Azelle became close friends with Lex of Dozel and Tailtiu of Friege. Early in the Verdane raid on Grannvale, Azelle and Lex arrived from the north to assist Sigurd in fighting the invasion in opposition to Arvis's wishes, though Lex teased Azelle over how the latter may have actually been motivated to help by his infatuation with Edain.[3] Following the Verdane skirmish, he continued to fight with Sigurd in Agustria, Silesse and beyond until his presumed death in the Battle of Belhalla.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Azelle has a really rocky start due to his low movement and frailty. However, he has one of the best promotion bonuses in the game, mainly due to gaining a mount and a sword. When promoted, his magic makes him useful against the often high defense, low resistance bosses of gen 1. He's also the best user of the Earth Sword, which is useful against endgame bosses for bypassing Pavise. Getting Azelle to promote can be a tough process. He has very bad arena performance and will likely need a money dump from Dew to buy the Paragon Ring. He has a few decent training spots outside of arena, such as when he first joins in Prologue, and in Mackily in Chapter 2. But all in all, it is a tough road to promotion and will likely require some rigging or some very slow play to pull off. When using Azelle, be sure to swap out the Fire tome for something better as soon as he can, as it weighs down Azelle quite a bit.
As a father
Azelle may seem like a father in high demand due to passing down Follow-Up, but unfortunately he also passes down mage stats, which a lot of children don't appreciate. Tailtiu and Lachesis are really the only two mothers whose children want Follow-Up and wouldn't mind the mage stats. Tailtiu's kids are already mages, Lachesis' daughter appreciates the magic boost and her son can use magic swords to fight instead. Azelle is considered one of the better pairings for Tailtiu, but Lachesis has better options. Edain is also worth noting as a pairing since it allows you to obtain Rescue in gen 1, but Claud is considered better for that route since an Azelle-fathered Lana cannot inherit Rescue.
Personality and character
Though he hated fighting,[4] Azelle was nonetheless driven to support Sigurd in repelling the Verdane invasion by the threat it posed to Edain's life, as a result of his ongoing romantic interest in Edain herself[3] which he developed upon first meeting her at a young age.[5] Despite holding a deep respect for him as both a brother and a father figure, Azelle was terrified of Arvis[6] and believed that he considered him to be a nothing but a burden incapable of meeting his expectations.[7]

- In Chapter 5, Lex can talk to Azelle after Lubeck Castle has been seized, yielding no reward.

- ↑ "Also, Arvis exiled all but one of his father Victor’s mistresses. He ordered their children to be demoted to servants or exiled. The only mistress left was a girl who was his mother Cigyun’s maid servant. Although she went through a tough childhood and wasn’t beautiful, she had a kind heart and frequently took care of Arvis. Even Arvis could not be cruel towards her.
Although Victor got his hands on the girl from the momentum of being drunk, when he knew the girl got pregnant he yelled, cursed, used violence, and tried to drive her away. The person who scolded at this was Cigyun, and the very child who this girl got pregnant with was in fact Azelle. When Victor died, Azelle was just born.
Arvis hated (like truly hated) his father for making mother sad for immature thoughts. When that father commited suicide, and Cigyun ran away, a cold mask always floated around the young expression. But, he thought of that mistress and Azelle as his own family.
From there, the mistress was grateful for Arvis, and served him by taking care of the space around him, but she also died of disease around 10 years later.
From then on, there was no sight of a woman around Arvis." - Designers' notes from Fire Emblem: Treasure, as translated by Serenes Forest - ↑ 3.0 3.1 "Azelle: Yeah, but with the military on engagement to Isaach, Grannvale's completely strapped! Sigurd and the few soldiers left in Chalphy are out here fighting for their lives! I can't just leave them hanging...
Lex: Oh really... I'm not quite buying your story, Azelle. What aren't you telling me?
Azelle: Wh...what're you talking about!?
Lex: I'd surmise that you're all worked up about Lady Edain of Yngvi. I know you like her.
Azelle: Y...you're nuts!
Lex: A-ha! Face is getting red there, buddy! You little player you.
Azelle: Lex, knock it off! Now come on, let's get going." — Azelle and Lex, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War - ↑ "Then why did you do such a silly thing? Besides, I thought you hated fighting." — Edain, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
- ↑ "It's just that I always held you in such high regard. The first time I saw you my heart started beating so fast! I was just a kid, too! But ever since that day you were the only one for me." — Azelle, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
- ↑ "Azelle: Boy, you're strong, Lex. I start to shake just when I'm around Arvis.
Lex: I can't figure your brother out. I never thought of him as a bad guy. He was always kind to us.
Azelle: Yeah, he always meant more to me than my dad did. But sometimes I feel like I don't even know him. He can get pretty violent." — Azelle and Lex, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War - ↑ "Sigurd: Geez, I could never ask you to fight. Does your brother, Lord Arvis, know that you're here?
Azelle: Er... no, I doubt it. He's back in Belhalla commanding the Royal Guard. Actually, he specifically forbade me from stepping outside the capital.
Sigurd: I bet he did! Have you considered the consequences of leaving like you did?
Azelle: Yeah, but... I shouldn't say this, but Arvis scares the living hell out of me! I don't think I live up to his expectations. I... I feel like I'm just a burden on him." — Sigurd and Azelle, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
