“ | Sigurd and the few soldiers left in Chalphy are out here fighting for their lives! I can't just leave them hanging... | ” | — Azel |
---|
(アゼル Azel) was a nobleman of House Velthomer of Grannvale, and the younger half-brother of its Duke Arvis. An illegitimate child born of his father Victor's rape of one of his wife Cigyun's maidservants, he was raised by Arvis as the only family he had left following his father's suicide and Cigyun's disappearance. In Grann 757, he set out to join Sigurd in repelling the Verdane invasion of Grannvale, having heard of the threat to Adean of Jungby by Verdane forces.
Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
Role
Early in the Verdane raid on Grannvale, Azel and Lex arrived from the north to assist Sigurd in fighting the invasion in opposition to Arvis's wishes, though Lex teased Azel over how the latter may have actually been motivated to help by his infatuation with Adean.[2] Following the Verdane skirmish, he continued to fight with Sigurd in Agustria, Silesse and beyond until his presumed death in the Battle of Belhalla.

Personality and character
Though he hated fighting,[3] Azel was nonetheless driven to support Sigurd in repelling the Verdane invasion by the threat it posed to Adean's life, as a result of his ongoing romantic interest in Adean herself[2] which he developed upon first meeting her at a young age.[4] Despite holding a deep respect for him as both a brother and a father figure, Azel was terrified of Arvis[5] and believed that he considered him to be a nothing but a burden incapable of meeting his expectations.[6]

Azel: Wh...what're you talking about!?
Lex: I'd surmise that you're all worked up about Lady Adean of Jungby. I know you like her.
Azel: Y...you're nuts!

Sigurd: I bet he did! Have you considered the consequences of leaving like you did?
Azel: Yeah, but... I shouldn't say this, but Arvis scares the living hell out of me! I don't think I live up to his expectations. I... I feel like I'm just a burden on him." — Sigurd and Azel, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
