Ayra
| ||||||||||||||||
|
“ | ...Consider your trust reciprocated then. That's the way of the Isaachian warrior. For now I consecrate my sword to thee. | ” | — Ayra, to Sigurd |
---|
Ayra (Japanese: アイラ Ira) was a princess of Isaach, a descendant of the crusader Od, the daughter of King Mananan and the younger half-sister of Crown Prince Mariccle. At the height of Isaach's war with Grannvale, Ayra was tasked by Mariccle to flee Isaach with his young son Shannan, to ensure his survival and the future of the Isaach royal family. Their travels eventually took them to Verdane, where Ayra was eventually left with no choice but to work as a mercenary for Prince Cimbaeth, who imprisoned Shannan as leverage to ensure Ayra's full cooperation. With the death of Cimbaeth and the rescue of Shannan by Sigurd's forces, Ayra allied with Sigurd - if with reservations given the war between their countries - and spent the next few years serving in his forces until the Battle of Belhalla, in which she disappeared.
Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
Role
When Cimbaeth departed Castle Genoa to attempt to retake Castle Evans to the north, he placed Ayra in charge of Genoa's defence, with only a small defence force serving under her. Determined to ensure Shannan's safety from both Cimbaeth and the impending army led by Sigurd - her enemy, being of Grannvale - Ayra actively and relentlessly engaged Sigurd's forces in combat. Sigurd got around her and seized Genoa, then freed Shannan from his imprisonment and, with his freedom, convinced Ayra to stand down and ally with his army. Ayra agreed, for Shannan's benefit, but reminded Sigurd that her country was still at war with Grannvale, that as such he was still technically her enemy, and that should the need one day arise she would not hesitate to treat him as such.
During the war, if she married, Ayra gave birth to twin children: Larcei and Scáthach. Following the defeat of Lombard and Sigurd's capture of Castle Lubeck, the two were sent away along with the infant Seliph to the outskirts of Isaach, under the protection of Shannan and Oifey; though Sigurd wanted her to go with them, she stayed with his forces, telling him that she intends to finish the war and that Shannan can now look after himself.[2]
Ayra was present at the Battle of Belhalla, in which Sigurd's army was executed by the mages of Velthomer, but her ultimate fate in its aftermath—whereas other female members of Sigurd's army survived it, if temporarily—remains unknown, both in-universe and otherwise. Larcei, for her part, firmly believed that Ayra was still alive seventeen years later, and fiercely rebuked Scáthach for suggesting otherwise.[3]

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Ayra starts off as somewhat of a risky unit to use. Her combat is decent (albeit not particularly noteworthy unless she activates Astra), but her bulk isn't great. Due to how Genealogy calculates hit rates, as well as lances being common, she cannot dodge reliably. Once she gets the Brave Sword and/or promotes, her offense becomes far more consistent, but one must be careful to keep her from taking too many attacks. To make matters more difficult, as infantry, she cannot get to combat as fast as the mounted units. On the bright side, she does rather well at the arena. If one wishes to make heavy use of her, then consider giving the Leg Ring to her so she can catch up, though keep in mind the Leg Ring is a heavily contested item. It would also be wise to either give her the Shield Ring to improve her bulk, or the Knight Ring to employ hit and run strategies.
Ayra's most notable pairings are with Lex, Chulainn, and Naoise. Lex provides Paragon to her children as well as significantly improved bulk. However, Lex is an optimal husband for several other women, so he may be needed elsewhere. Naoise grants the kids additional combat skills, making them powerful but somewhat inconsistent. Both of these husbands have much better movement than Ayra, meaning it can be a tad tricky to get them paired up quickly. Chulainn doesn't have this issue; instead he grants the children really high Skill growth, making their skill activations more reliable. Futhermore, this pairing enables a glitch in which Ayra's children can equip the Balmung, amping up their combat power. Keep in mind that Ayra gets the Brave Sword by talking to either Lex or Chulainn while she doesn't have a lover, so if you intend to pair her up with someone besides those two men, be sure to do so after getting the Brave Sword.

Fire Emblem Awakening
Ayra is playable as a SpotPass bonus character, released in the Genealogy of the Holy War first-generation character set. Along with Innes of The Sacred Stones and Clair of Gaiden, Ayra was one of the first three characters to be revealed to a "returning character" on March 14th, 2012, in a video released by Nintendo on the Wii's Nintendo Channel service which which they later also placed on the official Japanese website for Awakening. This video confirmed the game's use of SpotPass functionality to deliver bonus playable characters returning from earlier games in the Fire Emblem series.[4]
Ayra also appears as an enemy unit in two DLC episodes - Lost Bloodlines 1 and Lost Bloodlines 3 - and as a NPC in a further one episode, Lost Bloodlines 2.

Ayra: Thanks, but it wouldn't be right if I left now. I'm finishing this war with you.
Sigurd: Huh? You were entrusted with Shannan's protection, but he's in Isaach and you're here!
