The Axe Knight (Japanese: 斧騎士アクスナイト Axe Knight) is a basic mounted class which debuted in Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War. It is one of the four weapon-specialist versions of the Cavalier, specializing exclusively in axes as its name suggests, and is a counterpart to the Free Knight/Sword Knight, Lance Knight and Arch Knight/Bow Knight.

Axe Knights are statistically very similar to their counterpart base mounted classes, but owing to their exclusive axe use their performance varies in practice. They are slowed down substantially by the sheer weight of their weapons of choice, but in exchange deal significantly greater damage on average with the higher might of axes. They also tend toward having bulkier defenses than their counterparts, with somewhat higher HP and defense. In Thracia 776, Axe Knights are forced to dismount to operate indoors, which forces them to wielde swords instead of their usual axes, thus reducing the burden of axe weight upon them and making them faster and more accurate fighters.

In Genealogy of the Holy War and Thracia 776, Axe Knights promote to the Great Knight class. In Path of Radiance, they instead promote to Paladin like their counterparts and have a choice of new weapon type to wield upon promotion. In Radiant Dawn, they promote to Axe Paladin, which in turn promotes again to Gold Knight.

Trivia

  • The Axe Knight shares its name with the Axe Knight, a member of the Meta-Knights in the Kirby series.
  • The Axe Knight's flavor text in Path of Radiance is shared with the Sword Knight, Lance Knight, and Bow Knight classes.
  • In Fire Emblem Heroes, generic axe-wielding cavalry units are known as Axe Knights in the Japanese version, but the English version translated it as Axe Cavalier rather than Axe Knight (Axe Knight instead being the English name of axe-wielding armored units).
