Astrid (Japanese: ステラ Stella) is a noblewoman from Begnion's House Damiell. To escape an arranged marriage, she left her family to serve as a knight of Begnion and, later, as a mercenary. Her service with Ike during the Mad King's War led her to join the Kingdom of Crimea after the war and serve as one of its renowned Royal Knights.

Biography

Early life

Astrid was born into House Damiell and had many brothers and sisters. While her brothers were allowed to join the Begnion army and achieve greatness of their own, all of her sisters were forced into arranged marriages with men of other Begnion noble houses, whom they often did not know at all before the marriage. Astrid occasionally received letters from her sisters, which were often stained with their tears from the loveless environment they were trapped in.[1] Astrid herself was doomed for the same after she was arranged to be married to Senator Lekain,[2] a man at least thirty years her senior, and although she wasn't sure at first, she soon refused to share their fate and desired to choose her own destiny instead of letting her parents do it for her. She joined the knights of Begnion to escape this marriage, and while her family objected to the idea, they assumed her desire to join was just a phase and that she would inevitably return to them. Despite her great difficulties keeping up with the knight's lifestyle, Astrid refused to give her parents the satisfaction of seeing her fail and kept at it.[3] Her tenure with the Begnion knights was relatively short, and she became a mercenary after leaving their service.[4]

The Mad King's War

Some time after the Mad King's War began, Astrid met Gatrie, who entered her service as a bodyguard.[5] Astrid took a voyage on a ship headed west along Tellius's southern coast, on the same vessel as Apostle Sanaki, but the ship was attacked by both raven pirates and a beorc vessel which secretly belonged to Daein. When Begnion soldiers and the Greil Mercenaries deployed to fight off the attacks and defend the apostle, Astrid and Gatrie joined in despite the protests of the Begnion soldiers.[6] During the fight, Astrid met with Ike, the Greil Mercenaries leader and Gatrie's former co-worker, and the two agreed to work together for the battle. After they arrived in Begnion, Astrid asked to continue to serve with Ike, believing that doing so would allow her to grow stronger and find satisfaction in life.[7]

Astrid's service with the Greil Mercenaries helped to raise her confidence, and after the war ended, she decided to re-enter the Begnion knighthood.[8] However, in the following three years she ended up joining the Crimean Royal Knights instead, serving under the command of General Geoffrey.

Knight of Crimea

During her time with the Crimean Royal Knights, Astrid became close to fellow Royal Knight Makalov and took to taking care of him and cleaning up after him. She insisted that she believed him to be a peerless knight and gentleman, to the confusion of everybody else.[9] In 648, Astrid accompanied Geoffrey and the other Royal Knights to Castle Felirae to arrest Ludveck, but after completing their raid they found Ludveck to be absent and their entire target to have been a ruse to keep the Royal Knights busy while Ludveck attacked Queen Elincia. They immediately set off for Fort Alpea, Elincia's safe house during the civil war, and helped to fight off Ludveck's siege.

Later, during the war between Begnion and the Laguz Alliance, Astrid and the Royal Knights were deployed to a village near the Begnion border to put a stop to a Begnion detachment as it pillaged the village on the orders of Valtome. After this battle, she attended Elincia's attempt to stop the Begnion and Gallian armies from battling in Crimean territory, and when Valtome commanded his army to attack the unarmed Elincia, Astrid and the Royal Knights fought to defend her with the help of the Greil Mercenaries. She then joined the Apostle's Army under Ike, along with the rest of the Royal Knights, and later participated in the battles against the Disciples of Order. She continued to serve as a Royal Knight after Ashera's defeat.

Personality and character

Astrid is fiercely determined to live her own life on her own terms, having witnessed the despair her sisters suffered from having their lives so tightly controlled and refusing to end up the same way. Doing this has not been easy and has made her painfully aware of her own frailty and physical limits, but despite the unforgiving nature of war and how it makes her unwilling to even sleep at night because of the risk of ambushes, she is resolved to grin and bear all of it to keep her independence.[3] Despite being very talented at wielding bows, she is aware that she knows relatively little about the realities of combat thanks to her sheltered upbringing, and she is determined to better herself and become stronger not only to achieve this, but to ensure that she is never a burden on her comrades.[7]

Astrid's former sheltered life as a noblewoman gives her a bit of a naive streak, as most resoundingly evidenced by how she somehow grew to fervently believe Makalov to be a good man and to overlook his irresponsible ways. As part of this she is generous arguably to the point of gullibility, thinking nothing of giving away all of her gold to a poor family, or of giving treasured heirlooms to the likes of Makalov, if it means helping them.[10] She had a close relationship with her late grandmother and wore a pendant which once belonged to her, but at the same time, she thought nothing of giving it to Makalov as she knew memories of her grandmother would always be with her regardless of her keeping the pendant.[11]

Quotes

Battle quotes

As a fellow citizen of Begnion, I find this situation deplorable. Repent now, if you like. Your time grows short.
— Astrid, when appearing as a reinforcement in Chapter 17 of Path of Radiance.
I’ll pray for the fortunes of the war to be on everyone’s side…
— Astrid, when escaping (unused) in Path of Radiance.

Against Sothe in the Part 3 Endgame

Astrid: Oh… It’s you, Sothe. I’d sincerely hoped we wouldn’t meet like this.
Sothe: Me too, Astrid.
Astrid: I knew you were with the Daein army, but I hoped that, if I didn’t see you, I could pretend it wasn’t true. Now, however, I’m glad I saw you. How you have grown. You look like a true soldier now.
Sothe: …I’m not the only one who’s grown. You look every bit the true knight now, Astrid.
Astrid: You really think so? Thank you, Sothe. That means a lot to me.
Sothe: I know the answer, but I still have to ask. Will you pull back? We don’t really have to do this, do we?
Astrid: I was about to ask you the same thing. I don’t want to fight you, Sothe. Please fall back.
Sothe: …I thought as much. Let’s get started. I’m sorry, Astrid.
Astrid: I am sorry as well, Sothe.

Against Lekain in the Part 4 Endgame

Astrid: Lord Lekain…
Lekain: Hm? You… You are from House Damiell…
Astrid: Yes, I am. It’s been a while, but I didn’t think you’d forget me quite so easily. I wasn’t sure at the time, but marrying you would have been the biggest mistake of my life.
Lekain: Ha! Bold talk from a penniless mercenary! You were never worthy of Lekain of Gaddos, head of the senators and chosen by the goddess herself!

Against Hetzel in the Part 4 Endgame

Hetzel: Mortals cannot measure up to gods. Any child knows as much. Why do you not kneel before her?
Astrid: That would be throwing away my own beliefs to live a life of blind obedience. I stopped doing that three years ago, and I’ve never looked back.

Against Levail in the Part 4 Endgame

Levail: Lady Astrid, please stand down. A lady like you shouldn’t have taken up a weapon in the first place.
Astrid: No, I am a knight of Crimea, here to fight you. Please forget about the past. The Lady Astrid you knew no longer exists.
Levail: You have indeed become strong. Very well! Prepare yourself!

Against Sephiran in the Part 4 Endgame

Astrid: Lord Sephiran, your every action in office earned you the trust of millions of Begnion citizens. I can’t believe that you could stab every one of them in the back like that.
Sephiran: Young lady… Actually, I should address you properly… Astrid of the Crimean Royal Knights. Did you happen to stop by your home on the way here?
Astrid: No, I didn’t.
Sephiran: Aren’t you worried about your family? Perhaps you should check on them…
Astrid: No. Everyone’s fine. Even if they’re frozen solid, I’m going to save them. I have nothing at all to worry about.
Sephiran: You’ve grown stronger. But your heart hasn’t changed. Good.

    Astrid: Am I?
Sothe: You are. Most nobles get rich by trampling on the commoners, then spend their lives basking in filthy luxury. I’ve known them to be that way since the day I was born. They’ve never seen a blister or sweat for a day’s meal in their lives. Do you know how lucky you are?
Astrid: But there’s no freedom! My brothers are the pride of the house. As soldiers, they lead glorious lives. But my sisters are traded like commodities, promised to fiances they don’t even know. They don’t know love. I receive letters from them once every few years. The pages are warped and stained from tears.
Sothe: You didn’t want to end up like them.
Astrid: No, I didn’t. That’s why I have no intention of leaving this war until I see it to the end.

    Astrid: I’m sorry…
Sothe: I know it’s not my worry, but aren’t you pushing yourself a bit hard? You’re having a rough time just keeping up with the pack. You’re a wreck!
Astrid: I had no idea…how cruel and unforgiving war would actually be. Grueling marches…day in and day out. I can’t even sleep at night because I’m terrified of surprise attacks. It’s made me painfully aware of my frailty.
Sothe: Nobles aren’t cut out for war. As you can see, there are no chambermaids to attend to your every whim out here! I’m sure you’ve got a lavish and free life waiting for you back home.
Astrid: Lavish and free? Lavish, maybe…but certainly not free. I have no freedom.
Sothe: No freedom? What are you talking about?
Astrid: My parents have already chosen and arranged a fiance for me. I’ve heard he is thirty years older than me.
    Sothe:
Astrid: I volunteered for service with the knights of Begnion to live on my own terms. Of course, my family vehemently opposed the idea, but they figured it was merely a phase. They thought I would come home crying. I won’t give them that satisfaction.

Astrid: I was once a knight of Begnion, albeit for only a short while...I won't get in your way.
    Soldier: No, I can't--
Astrid: We must defend the apostle, right? We do not have the luxury of choosing how to do so. Come, we must get ready. The enemy is coming!
Soldier: You are right. We need every able fighter. Accept my apologies, and thank you for your help.

  7. 7.0 7.1 "Astrid: I am still not satisfied. I may now be a knight, but my hands still shake when I draw my bowstring. So perhaps my goal was not simply to become a knight. Perhaps my true goal was to become stronger. Commander Ike, the others say that you never give up, no matter how bleak the fight. That seems like true strength to me. Please, allow me to continue fighting by your side. If I remain with you, I will grow stronger from your example.
Ike: Your skill with the bow is spectacular. How could I possibly refuse your request? We're pleased to have you.
Astrid: Oh...thank you! Thank you very much!

  9. "Calill: Good grief… That man’s an embarrassment. Are you sure he’s a Royal Knight? He’s like a pig pretending to fly. Why not put a dog in armor and call it “sir”!
Astrid: Miss Calill, that’s not very nice! I think Sir Makalov deserves a little more respect than that.
Calill: Are you blind, Astrid? It’s the night before a mission, and that fool is stinking drunk. Probably gambled all his money away, too. And you! You follow him around mooning over him and cleaning up his messes! Do you have no pride, girl? What the man needs is someone to slap some sense into him. Perhaps I should–
Astrid: I’ve chosen to look after Sir Makalov! Nobody’s forced me to do it. And it’s really none of your business!
Calill: You know, I’m really starting to wonder about your “good upbringing.” Of all the men out there, what possessed you to place your bets on such a shabby prospect?
Astrid: Wh-what did you just say!? There are no gentlemen in this land half as fine as Sir Makalov!
" — Calill and Astrid, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  10. "Astrid: Good day, Makalov.
Makalov: Hi, Astrid. We sure bump into each other a lot, don’t we? Do you think we’re linked by fate?
Astrid: I’m not sure. Though…I’d be honored if that was the case.
Makalov: Speaking of fate… I have a little favor to ask of you.
Astrid: What is it? If there’s anything I can do for you, I’d be glad to help!
Makalov: Um… Well, the thing is… You see… Can you lend me some money?
    Astrid: M-money?
Makalov: Yeah! Just a few hundred! That’s it!
Astrid: I don’t think I can help you… I don’t have a single gold piece to my name.
Makalov: What?! Not even one gold? What did you spend it all on?!
Astrid: The last time I went to town, I stumbled upon a destitute family. They hadn’t eaten in days… So, I gave it all to them.
Makalov: WHAT?! That’s madness!! If you’re feeling charitable, maybe you should think about helping out one of your comrades, and not some stranger! What were you thinking?!
Astrid: I’m sorry. I had no idea you were in need of aid.
Makalov: Arrgg! Fine. I’ll go hit up someone else.
    Astrid: Wait…just a moment.
    Makalov: Hmmm?
    Astrid: Will this help?
Makalov: Whoooo! Hey, look at that beauty! This pendant looks expensive… Are you sure I can take it?
Astrid: Please do. Anything that will help.
Makalov: Wahooooo! Thanks, Astrid! You’re the best! I’ll see ya later!
    Astrid:
" — Astrid and Makalov, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
  11. "Astrid: My pendant was really worth that much? I… I only wore it because my beloved grandmother gave it to me when I was just a girl. I had no idea…
Makalov: Whoa! It’s a memento!? Why the heck did you give me something so important?
Astrid: That pendant is just an object. Memories of my grandmother always remain in my heart, even if I let the pendant go. I suppose I thought it would do more good if I gave to someone in need.
