Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Astolfo will most likely be the best thief you recruit in the entire game. His base stats are high enough to make him a decent combat unit during the Western Isles. However, the fact that thieves cannot promote in The Binding Blade means he will not keep up for long, nor is it necessary to train him (note that thieves can steal no matter what their speed is in The Binding Blade).

Despite his weaknesses, Astolfo is still significantly better than your two other options for thieves: Chad and Cath. Both Chad and Cath's base stats are much lower than Astolfo's when you recruit them, and raising either is hard as you will primarily use them as lockpick utilities rather than combatants. Simply put, Astolfo is far superior to either Chad or Cath.

Astolfo is the best option for thief utility, but he can serve well as a filler combat unit, thanks to his decent bases and great speed allowing him to dodge most attacks reliably, though he will be worse than other sword fighters when trained in the long term.

Personality

Astolfo, despite his important role as Ostian spy, is somewhat lazy and uncaring of the world around him; he dismisses orders to hasten his movements with casual sarcasm.[3] The injury to his leg that impedes his movement serves to intensify his apathy to keeping up with the troops.[4]

Astolfo likes to tease others to an extent; he constantly would end his story to Lilina about meeting Hector at the more exciting parts. He does eventually tell her the whole tale about him stealing from Ostia and being offered a job by Hector due to his skill. Astolfo respected Hector highly, and was hit hard by his death, even drinking himself to drunkeness in the middle of a battle with little regard for his safety.[5] Considering Hector's death occurs before Astolfo is recruited, his apathetic behavior towards himself and others during his time in Roy's forces may have been caused or increased by the death of Hector.

Astolfo seems to still care about his former wife Igrene, but he refuses to acknowledge that he is Gorlois, and blatantly lies to her about his identity. She specifically asks to see his leg, looking for a scar, though he insists he does not have any. He openly discusses his scar to others; making his lie clear. Astolfo first met Igrene in Nabata while suffering severe injuries and amnesia; Astolfo took the name Gorlois and they lived together for several years after this, even having a child. Eventually, Astolfo regained his memories and recalled his identity as a spy. Astolfo quickly realized the danger he had put Igrene in, he was a spy with Ostian secrets, and others would hurt him and his loved ones for that information. Astolfo left Nabata and his love behind for her safety.
