Throughout its history, numerous artists have made significant contributions to individual games in the Fire Emblem series by providing illustrations of its characters, settings and scenarios. These artists, and the games in which each is credited, are summarized here.

Katsuyoshi Koya

Katsuyoshi Koya (Japanese: 小屋勝義 Koya Katsuyoshi) provided the vast majority of the card illustrations for the Fire Emblem Trading Card Game, with their work covering the entire casts of Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem, Genealogy of the Holy War and Thracia 776, and is also credited as a graphic designer for Mystery and Genealogy. Although they were not the original designated character illustrator for any of these games, their work has effectively replaced the original artwork accompanying Mystery and Genealogy and is now the most widely used to represent characters from these two games, including being used in Fire Emblem Awakening for the bonus unit portraits for the cast of Genealogy. Their artwork was also used as the basis for the Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War Exceed figurine series and for the designs of the Mystery and Genealogy cast in Fire Emblem Cipher. In 2008, they also contributed two "bonus artworks" of Lena and Barst for Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon.

Mayumi Hirota

Mayumi Hirota (Japanese: 広田麻由美 Hirota Mayumi) provided the character artwork for Fire Emblem: Thracia 776, having first come into contact with the series through her work on the Fire Emblem: Treasure art book in 1999; in an interview published in Treasure, director Shouzou Kaga said he considered her illustrations to be the perfect representation of his ideas for the characters of Genealogy of the Holy War and, later, Thracia 776.[1] She was also responsible for the art book Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 Illustrated Works and an assortment of other merchandise art accompanying Thracia 776. Her Treasure illustrations were reused for the first series of the Fire Emblem Trading Card Game, and she would continue to work with Shouzou Kaga after he left Intelligent Systems, serving as the illustrator for Tear Ring Saga and Berwick Saga.

Rika Suzuki

Rika Suzuki (Japanese: 鈴木理華 Suzuki Rika) provided the cutscene illustrations which accompanied the original live broadcasts of Fire Emblem: Archanea Saga. They also provided the illustrations for Gen'ichirou Suzuki's four-part novel adaptation of Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War and Mie Takase's two-part novel adaptation of Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones.[2] They later returned to the series in 2012 to contribute artwork of Seliph for the Fire Emblem Awakening DLC package Lost Bloodlines 3.

Sachiko Wada

Sachiko Wada (Japanese: ワダサチコ Wada Sachiko) is credited as contributing to the character portraits and other duties in all games from Thracia 776 to Radiant Dawn. Her most prominent contribution to the series, however, is as the director of and character artist for Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones. She also contributed two "bonus artworks" of Palla and Julian for Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon, as well as the artwork for Leif in Fire Emblem Awakening's DLC package Lost Bloodlines 1.

His first contribution to the series was as a graphic designer for Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade in a part-time capacity, with the illustrations of the fire dragons being his work,[3] and he is credited with contributions on every game between then and New Mystery. He is notably credited for working on the character portraits in Shadow Dragon, but not New Mystery despite the majority of his Shadow Dragon work remaining nearly unedited in New Mystery. He later provided the artwork of Eirika for the Fire Emblem Awakening DLC package Smash Brethren 2 and, being primarily a professional illustrator for various trading card games, currently serves as the art director for Fire Emblem Cipher.[4]

In an interview with the late Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, Kozaki described how he was first contacted to work on Awakening when he received an email request from Intelligent Systems to design sixty characters for an unidentified game, to which his first response was "Is this Fire Emblem?" and also admitted that prior to being hired for Awakening, he had never completed a Fire Emblem game before.[6]

Celica in Gaiden: the work of an unattributed artist.

The above listed individuals are by no means the only artists associated with Fire Emblem games; each individual game usually has several artists, sometimes including the above, who work on creating the graphics in the games themselves. Additionally, the individuals responsible for providing the character and box artwork for Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, Gaiden and, prior to Koya's work, Mystery of the Emblem and Genealogy of the Holy War are currently unknown.

Fire Emblem Trading Card Game

While the majority of the character artwork for cards in the Fire Emblem Trading Card Game was the work of Koya and Hirota, a plethora of other artists contributed card artwork for the Jugdral Anthology card series and certain promotional cards in 2003. These artists included Eiji Kaneda and Yusuke Kozaki, among numerous other illustrators with no other known tie to the Fire Emblem series.

Manga artists

Many games in the series have been adapted into the form of manga, each of these being done by a different artist.

Fire Emblem Awakening DLC contributors

In addition to featuring new work from Kita, Wada, Suzuki, Izuka, and Kaneda, a large number of other artists with no prior connection to the Fire Emblem series also contributed individual character artwork for the DLC packages in Fire Emblem Awakening. All of these illustrations were later recycled for the characters' appearances in the Fire Emblem: One Hundred Songs of Heroes card set. Some of these artists have since contributed to 0 (Cipher).

TCG Fire Emblem 0 (Cipher) contributors
