— Arran to Kris
|
Arran is a paladin from Altea. He appears in Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light, Mystery of the Emblem and both of the DS remakes.
Role
Arran lives in a village near the Altean castle near another village which has bad blood with Arran's village. When Marth's army arrives to retake Altea, he has to choose between visiting Arran's village and recruiting him, or visiting the other village and recruiting the hero Samson. If Arran is chosen, he serves as a soldier in Marth's army for the rest of the War of Shadows.

Arran joins in Chapter 16 as a pre-promoted Paladin. Because of his late recruitment he won't have much time to contribute or grow. Unfortunately, by the time you recruit him he will likely not hold up in comparison to your other units. He does have some strong attributes: his movement is excellent at 10, his weapon level is high enough to use every sword not exclusive to Marth and every lance besides the Gradivus, his speed and defense are fairly decent and his growths in HP, strength, skill, weapon level, speed and luck are all serviceable. He is also a good candidate to use the Manual to allow him to use the Gradivus, assuming you don't have a better unit who can use it. Unfortunately, these decent attributes don't make up for his weaknesses. Most of his stats, especially his strength, are fairly poor for how late he joins. In order to bring him on par with your trained up units he will need to get several levels or use multiple stat boosters, however with how late he joins by the time he is on par with your other units through level ups the game will be close to done, and your stat boosters are better used elsewhere. If you don't have any units that can effectively use the Gradivus when Arran is recruited he is your best bet, but otherwise he has very little utility.

Book 2
Role
During the time between Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem, Arran contracts a disease that severely hampers his combat abilities and will eventually kill him. Despite this, he continues to serve Marth as one of his knights. One day, Marth is given an imperial edict by Hardin of Archanea to deploy his troops to Grust to quash a rebellion led by General Lorenz. Arran is among the knights Marth chooses to accompany him, and he continues to serve Marth throughout the War of Heroes.

Arran is not that useful. While he has a Silver Lance, Cecil's base weapon level of seven is high enough to use it as well. While he does have a base stat of six in resistance with the cavaliers having a base of zero, there won't be any magic-using enemies until chapter 5, by which time the player will have Catria, Palla, Sirius, and Caeda. He does have a higher base speed stat than any of the three cavaliers, but in a few level ups he will be outclassed. His defense, however, is good and it will take a bit for the cavaliers to reach his defense, as they all have a low defense growth rate; however, Palla has a similar defense stat (one less than Arran). Due to Arran's very low growth rates, it is probably not a good idea to use him long term.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.
|
Arran is the first prepromoted unit you get access to in New Mystery of the Emblem and, as such, has both good bases and high weapon levels for his join time. Furthermore, he has access to the silver lance to deal high damage against the earlygame enemies and set up kills for your other units. Arran’s stats won't be very impressive for long, however, due to his terrible growth rates and the high growths of most other characters in New Mystery. In addition, seeing as the enemies in New Mystery are generally powerful and grow in strength faster than Arran does, he will become irrelevant combat wise around the midgame (Palla and Sirius joining a few chapters later with not only the same lance rank but also higher bases and growths doesn’t help either). Arran's best niches are achieved through reclassing: he can become a General to serve as a great tank against the powerful early-game enemies, a Dracoknight to improve his strength and give extra flying utility to the army, or serve as a staffbot by reclassing to either a Sage or a Bishop. Overall, like a typical Jagen unit, Arran is very useful in the earlygame and can find some use in the midgame as well, but falls off afterward.

When I said, "Aww, I wish it would change something," my senior told me, "We can't due to limited memory capacity." [...] I remembered how futile it seemed then, and I said, "Maeda-san, wouldn't you want to play a game where you could see what would happen if you chose the other side?
