Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Annette is a primarily magic-focused unit possessing a strength in Reason, a high growth in magic, and low growths in HP and Defense. While her Speed growth is fairly average, Annette has access to some of the lightest spells in the game, helping her avoid getting doubled on the enemy phase and double some enemies. Annette starts with the highest rank in Reason in the entire cast of students at a D+ allowing her to reach the rank to unlock Cutting Gale very early and deal high damage in the early game even if she fails to double the enemy. Annette also has access to Excalibur a lightweight and powerful spell that deals effective damage against Flying enemies. This is most helpful against Falcoknights as they have high resistance - though they will likely survive one hit from Excalibur due to their high resistance and speed - and can be overkill against most Wyvern Riders as they already have low enough AS and Resistance to die in one round from Annette's other spells.
Annette's spell list is weakened by a lack of a 3-range option, which can be mitigated by one of three pieces of equipment: The Caduceus Staff, Thyrsus, or a Bolt Axe+. The Caduceus Staff is the easiest to obtain, as it is a reward for finishing An Ocean View, accessed by recruiting Flayn which occurs automatically at the end of Chapter 7. Thyrsus is the most powerful, providing +2 magic range, though it is obtained from Lorenz's paralogue Land of the Golden Deer, meaning it requires recruiting Annette and Lorenz to the same house, a task made more difficult for the Black Eagles due to their differing requirements for recruitment (10 Magic and B in Faith for Annette, 20 Charm and C in Reason for Lorenz). A Bolt Axe+ is the most unconventional and likely the last option available outside of New Game +, requiring a Professor level of B+, 4 Arcane Crystals, 1,150 Gold, and Annette to have an Axe level of B; it is also the most flexible, as it allows Annette to make use of her high Magic outside of spell-using classes.
When Annette cannot reach the front lines, she can make use of her access to useful rally skills like Rally Speed and her personal skill Perseverance, which is equivalent to Rally Strength, to buff her more mobile allies or prevent her allies from getting doubled on the enemy phase. In a pinch, an additional four strength—and the potential +1 to AS it can provide—can be the difference between life and death and since it is her personal skill, it comes at no opportunity cost.
Rally Speed is very valuable throughout the game, so early investment to increase her Authority to a C+ will prove useful and will be achieved quickly thanks to her strength in Authority. Additionally, Annette will likely be in magic-utilizing classes for the entire game, so it is a good idea to train her in Faith at least to access Recover so that she has at least some utility as a healer in addition to her offensive and supportive utility.
Annette possess a Minor Crest of Dominic which will occasionally preserve some uses of attack magic, meaning it will activate for both Faith and Reason spells. This crest will likely be most useful early game, when spells are a more limited resource. Unfortunately, this is also the time when it has a lower activation rate. Furthermore, you will likely find as you progress through the game that you rarely run out of spells, if at all, as certain class skills double a unit's uses of their magic, rendering this crest's effect as largely irrelevant by the end of the game. Bearing a crest at all allows Annette to use Hero's Relics such as Thyrsus and Crusher without the 10-HP penalty suffered by non-crest bearers, and her Crest of Dominic also allows her to use Crusher's exclusive combat art, Dust. Unfortunately, Crusher is usually a bad offensive option for Annette. Crusher may be a Magic Weapon with high might but it is pitifully inaccurate with 60 Hit and is significantly heavier than most of Annette's spells at a weight of 11. The weight of Crusher will often slow down Annette enough to get her doubled and killed if she misses or is left exposed on the enemy phase. The exclusive combat art, Dust, does add an enormous 20 might to Annette's attack and effectiveness against dragons, however, it adds no bonuses to the hit rate, leaving her just as susceptible to missing and immediately dying to the enemy's counterattack. The defense debuff Dust inflicts on the enemy is largely redundant as when you use the art, you will generally want the enemy to die from Annette's attack or be unable to counterattack. The only situation in which Dust should be used is against Monsters with high defense.
Annette's strengths lie in magic so it is best to pick magic-enabled classes for her promotion. Her best class promotion line is to start as a Monk, promote into a Mage and master the class to gain access to Fiendish Blow, then promote into a Warlock to maximize her magical damage output and double the uses of her spells. Her best master class is the Dark Knight as Black Tomefaire further increases her offensive capabilities and Canto allows her to rally her allies without falling behind. Oddly, Annette also has a strength in Axes. While her strength growth is decent for a magic-oriented character, she will likely prove to be an unimpressive Brigand or Warrior and class changing her into such classes forces her to abandon her far superior magic offensive options. Annette's Axe rank should only be increased to gain access to the Bolt Axe and the Lightning Axe combat art and ignored thereafter.
Recruitment for Other Routes
The only special utility that sets Annette apart from the other magic-oriented characters such as Dorothea and Lysithea is her ability to rally speed and strength, otherwise, Annette will largely fulfill the same role that the first mage character recruited in the Golden Deer and Black Eagles routes will provide while lacking access to Dark Spikes, Physic, or Warp.
Keep in mind that when Annette is recruited outside of the Blue Lions route, she does not gain access to Crusher as the paralogue it is obtained in is exclusive to Azure Moon* as unlocking the paralogue requires both Annette and Gilbert, who is exclusive to the Azure Moon route, to be recruited and alive.

Annette, Bloomed Overachiever
Annette returned to her hometown of Fhirdiad where she took up a teaching position at the Royal School of Sorcery. She was a gifted instructor, and many of her students went on to become world-renowned sages. Though her talent for teaching was remarkable in its own right, she was perhaps best remembered for effortlessly securing the trust and respect of her many students, as well as inspiring all who knew her by living a life of kindness, cheer, and humility.
Mercedes, Benevolent Soul & Annette, Bloomed Overachiever
After the war, Annette and Mercedes lived separate lives: the former as a teacher at the school of sorcery in Fhirdiad, the latter as a cleric at Garreg Mach. Though they lived apart, they exchanged letters so frequently and shared their lives with one another in such detail that it was as though they were side by side. After many decades, they resigned their respective positions and reunited at Garreg Mach. In their final years, they relocated to a modest home in the Fortress City. It is said that they were happy together to the very end.
Azure Moon
Annette, Bloomed Overachiever & Gilbert, Veteran Patriot
Gustave discarded the name of Gilbert and reaffirmed his oath of fealty to King Dimitri and the royal family. After returning to Fhirdiad, he reunited with his wife, who had returned to live with Baron Dominic, and his beloved daughter, Annette, who had begun teaching at the capital's school of sorcery. Thought it was initially an awkward reunion, over time the family rekindled their love for one another. As the shadow of war receded from the Kingdom, the three spent their days happily making up for lost time.
