Ancient Horrors (Japanese: 異形の者たち Grotesque Figures) is the fourth chapter of Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones. This chapter's tutorial elements introduces the Trinity of Magic and monsters.

Plot

Main article: Ancient Horrors/Script

Having defeated Bazba and his bandit gang, Eirika continues her journey south to Grado in search of Ephraim. In their path is Za'ha Woods, an ancient forest in Renais.

Some time after entering the forest Eirika notices strange figures in the forest, and she asks Seth about them.

Artur and Lute, residents of the forest, have also noticed the strange creatures. Artur is greatly concerned by this, wondering how monsters walk the soil of Magvel while the Sacred Stones exist. Lute recognizes some of the monsters, mentioning that they are revenants, walking human corpses that strike with claws. Artur tells Lute to stay in the village while he goes to meet the travelers up north. Lute is happy to, claiming that she could easily protect the village.

Approaching Eirika, Artur tells her group that they need to head south as quickly as possible to avoid being surrounded by monsters. Eirika questions Artur, asking if they are the same monsters that served the Demon king in the past, Artur seems unsure, but thinks they match descriptions of the legends.

A mogall approaches and attacks Artur, though it is easily dispatched. Eirika insists on helping Artur, and the battle beings.

Shortly into the battle a... glorious maiden and her two retainers appear at the top of the cliffs to the northeast. The woman strongly desires to smite the monsters in the name of justice, but eventually agrees to find a way down that doesn't involve throwing themselves down several cliffs.[1]

Lute either joins to assist Eirika's group during the battle after someone goes to the village, or insists on accompanying them after the battle.

After Eirika routs the monsters from the area Seth insists that the corpses be burned, to prevent them from getting up again. Eirika is still in disbelief, having never seen such abominations outside of myths and tales. Seth is greatly concerned by this new development, and recommends that they return to Frelia to regroup. Eirika insists they continue south in search of her brother, and Seth relents, and reaffirms his goal to protect Eirika at all costs.

The maiden from earlier arrives on the scene, comically late, introducing herself as L'Arachel. L'Arachel is downcast when Eirika informs her that the monsters have already been vanquished. Eirika asks L'Arachel of her identity, though L'Arachel is stopped by one of her retainers, saying it would be inappropriate to reveal her identity.

L'Arachel is happy to ride off mysteriously, leaving Eirika somewhat dumbfounded.

Beginning Log

With her bracelet recovered, Eirika sets out with renewed determination. Passing through the ancient forest Za'ha brings them close to Grado's border. As they near the town of Serafew, Eirika's fears are assuaged by the lack of troops. But never-before-seen terrors crawl in the shadows of the trees.
