— "Poem"

Anankos (Japanese: ハイドラ Hydra) is an ancient silent dragon who is revered as one of the god-like First Dragons. He is the king of the ruined kingdom of Valla, whose descent into madness resulted in the obliteration of both Valla and almost all of its people. The royal families of both Nohr and Hoshido possess his bloodline, and through this bloodline their members are able to tap into the power of Dragon Veins.

Both Hoshido and Nohr worship Anankos as a deity, although each country depicts him differently. Hoshido venerates him as the Dawn Dragon (Japanese: 光竜 Light Dragon), and Nohr venerates him as the Dusk Dragon (Japanese: 闇竜 Dark Dragon).

Biography

Anankos is the true main antagonist of the overreaching plot. Anankos replaced Garon with a creature under his control, and used the fake Garon to invade Hoshido to cause destruction and chaos.

Anankos is a dragon with powers over water, he is able to foresee events yet to come and control the emotions of humans.

If Corrin sides with neither kingdom he/she journeys to Valla to kill Anankos and end the strife between Hoshido and Nohr.

Fire Emblem Fates

Role

Hidden Truths (DLC)

In the Hidden Truths DLC, the human Anankos had traveled through time and space to Ylisse to recruit Owain, Severa, and Inigo into helping him. After defeating the Vallite forces who ambushed them, Anankos offers each of them to have their wishes come true in exchange for them helping him. The ancient being asked if they wanted infinite life, wealth, and other common desires of man, but the trio asked if it was in Anankos' power to fill the future world they lived in with flowers and give proper burials for their parents. As a thanks for doing such, the tactician from the future gives the Fell Brand to Anankos, who later gives it to his warriors.

Now within Valla, Anankos gives a proper description of who he is and what his issue is. Anankos explains of a dragon who loved the humans who worshipped him. But this dragon learned that he would soon fall into degeneration, being consumed by his bestial urges. In hopes of calming his dragon self down, Anankos had created his Dragonstone and gave it to the royal family of Valla, along with his blood. After which, he sang them a song that was made from three prophecies which, along with his Dragonstone, would calm the dragon down and lessen his power. The Dragonstone would then be passed through generations of the royal family, ending up in Azura's possession, as part of her necklace (or Shigure's, in the case of the "Heirs of Fate" DLC).

However, even with those precautions, Anankos still attacked his best friend, the former king of Valla, which caused Anankos' heart to be separated from his body, which turned into a human. Anankos also mentioned about how he once was lost and confused within Valla for a time before he met with Mikoto. The two eventually fell in love and had a child together, which would later become Corrin. The last he knew was Mikoto and the child heading for Hoshido to run from his dragon self.

Lilith would then appear and then Anankos would provide his chosen warriors with new powers, giving each their own personal skills and turning Owain from a Myrmidon to a Dark Mage. After granting the trio some of his blood, allowing them to use Dragon Veins, the three warriors went to defeat Lilith's army. Lilith attacks the warriors again, but Anankos send them off to Nohr to find his child. Lilith attempts to kill Anankos, but cannot bring herself to do it as the human Anankos loved her more than the dragon Anankos did. Before the dragon Anankos finished off Lilith, the human Anankos interceded and laid down his life to save a daughter he never had. Lilith then vows to her dragon father not to reveal this secret to the child, before slipping into the Astral Realm before heading for Nohr.

At the end of the DLC, the dragon form of Anankos loses slight control as its voice is mixed with its human voice. The human Anankos states he believes in his warriors and believes they will come and end his life before perishing, leaving only the mad dragon behind.

Birthright

Due to Corrin choosing to side Hoshido and never being shown Valla by Azura, Anankos is not shown throughout the story. The dragon is, however, briefly mentioned by Garon in his Blight Dragon form during the Endgame, granting Garon enough strength to transform into his dragon form and continue to battle. Afterwords Azura began to sing Lost in Thoughts All Alone to weaken Garon.

Conquest

Anankos is again, not shown per say, but thanks to Corrin choosing to side with Nohr, they were able to learn a bit more of Anankos from Garon. When Corrin joins Nohr, Garon states that they will be executed, with all the other royals of Nohr objecting the idea. Garon then decides to ask his God - Anankos - on what to do with Corrin's fate, telling Garon to keep them alive if they are able to stop the rebellion in the Ice Tribe in Chapter 8, but only by himself. Despite stopping the rebellion with his allies, Anankos tells Garon to keep Corrin alive.

Although not mentioned by name, when Corrin and Azura head to Valla, Azura begins to show Corrin that Garon was replaced with an empty vessel from Anankos with a Vallite crystal when heading back to Nohr, after reuniting with Gunter after a surprise attack from Vallite soldiers. Azura also states that the only way to get rid of the empty vessel is to make Garon sit on the throne of Hoshido, using its magic to reveal Garon's true form, but can only do that if the army conquers Hoshido. During Chapter 26, Garon needs to pray to Anankos now that they have conquered Hoshido, not allowing anyone else to enter the throne room. During it, Iago and Hans begin to try and kill off Corrin with a surprise attack, but they fail due to the Nohrian royals interference and are killed by them in the process. After their deaths, Corrin tells the group about their and Azura's plan to expose Garon and kill him because of his empty vessel form, but cannot say more because of the curse of Anankos. When revealed and fighting Corrin in Chapter 27, Garon says that he should have killed Corrin, even if it meant disobeying Anankos, however, Corrin just calls him out for starting the war and kills Garon.

Anankos is very briefly mentioned one last time by Azura during the Endgame, when Takumi comes out of nowhere and almost instantly kills Corrin. Azura and the spirit of Takumi - during Corrin's near-death experience - tells them that the Takumi who is fighting them is not Takumi, but again another empty vessel set by Anankos to kill Corrin, but this also fails, as Corrin defeats the possessed Takumi, then Anankos is forcefully driven out of Takumi, endings his reign for good.

Revelation

In this route, Ananokos' role is far larger, and it is finally revealed who and what he actually is. Anankos possesses Gunter, akin to how he possesses Takumi in the Conquest route. While under possession, "Gunter" faithfully serves the Avatar as he normally would, but he would attempt to kill them whenever they were alone. One of these attempts resulted in Scarlet being killed instead. He is the boss of two chapters in the climax of the Revelation campaign.

His first official appearance is as the boss of Chapter 27, where the player must defeat him (in his masked head form) to clear the chapter. He reappears in the Endgame as its boss, except here he must be defeated in four parts: first his two hands must be defeated, then his head must be defeated to destroy his body and expose his core, then the core must be defeated.

Personality and character

Before Degeneration: It is mentioned, that like Archanean dragons, dragons in Fates suffer degeneration. To save themselves from this degeneration, many dragons took human form or abandoned their bodies altogether. Anankos and the Rainbow Sage were the only two of the twelve divine dragon's that watched over Hoshido and Nohr to not leave the human world. Anankos suggested to stay in order to watch over Valla and his daughter, Lilith. He was cautious before the degeneration started inside him as he teaches his song to Selena, Odin, and Laslow in hopes that if he ever starts suffering they will come to end his life. Anankos shared his dragon blood with Garon, the king of Nohr and Sumeragi, the king of Hoshido in hopes that they will also help end his life if he lost his mind to degeneration.

After Degeneration: After Anankos fell to madness due to this degeneration, he attacked and killed Cadros, the first king of Valla so that he could become the new king. His suffering continued when he was left by his wife Arete. She took with her a piece of Anankos's dragon stone, the blue stone seen on Azura's pendant. Anankos developed a desire for bloodlust, and thus summoned invisible soldiers to attack both Hosido and Nohr, causing the two kingdoms to wage war. Anankos tries to stop humans from ending him by using the army of Vallite soldiers to his advantage. Anankos believes that humans should worship the dragons as they did before the other dragons left the human world. Once Anankos is defeated he is able to live in the spirit world with the other dragons.

Trivia

  • Despite being the progenitor of all of Fates's royalty from whose blood the ability to use the Dragon Veins is derived, Anankos himself does not possess the ability to activate Dragon Veins.

Anankos

Possibly derived from the ancient Greek deity Ἀνάγκη Ananke, the personification of fate. Her name as a word originally just meant "force" or "necessity", but ancient Greek literature gave it a secondary, poetic meaning of "fate" and "destiny".
