“ | How do you ever expect the citizens of Thracia to be content thriving off the blood and sweat of other nations? ...Your ways leave much to be desired, father. | ” | — Altena, to Travant |
---|
Altena (Japanese: アルテナ Altenna) is the princess of Leonster, the daughter of Quan and Ethlyn, the elder sister of Prince Leif, and a full-blooded descendant of the Crusader Njörun as well as a bearer of the Baldr bloodline of Chalphy. As an infant, she was with her parents when they and the Lanceritter were murdered by King Travant and the Thracian Wyvern Riders in the Aed Massacre, and in its aftermath she was taken by Travant along with her father's Gáe Bolg, which she was capable of wielding. She was raised as Travant's daughter along with Arion, Travant's actual son and her foster brother, and as she grew she served as a princess of Thracia and a Wyvern Rider in Thracia's army during the era of Grannvale occupation of the Munster District to the north.
It was not until seventeen years later that she met Leif and learned of her true parentage, as he and Seliph led their revolution army through the Thracian Peninsula. Convinced of the truth of Leif's words, at the advice of Arion she allied with Leif and Seliph, assisting in the defeat of Thracia before moving on with them to reclaim Miletos and launch an assault on Grannvale itself. At Grannvale, she convinced Arion to assist Seliph rather than continue to serve Julius.
Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
Role
Following the fall of Bloom and the Grannvale occupation of the Munster District, Travant dispatched Altena and Coulter to assault Munster, now occupied by Ced. Altena's misgivings about attacking innocents caused her to refuse to continue the attack; Coulter refused to listen and insisted on the doomed raid, losing to Seliph's army. During this encounter and the subsequent loss of Meath Castle, Altena merely observed from the mountains; Finn, a former Leonster Knight, noticed her presence and identified her as Quan's lost daughter.
After the loss of Meath, Altena reported back to a displeased Travant, who ordered her to sortie again to reclaim Meath; this time, she complied in full, given the lack of risk to innocents. During this fight, she was stopped by Leif, who revealed her true identity to her; initially in disbelief, she saw the truth from looking at her brother, and fled the battlefield to confront Travant about his hand in the deaths of her true parents. In response, Arion subdued her, and she recovered after Travant died on the battlefield. Acting under the encouragement of Arion, Altena reluctantly left Thracia to ally with Leif and Seliph.
In the last throes of the final confrontation at Grannvale, when Arion and a squad of Thracian mercenaries came under the payroll of Julius to subdue the revolution base at Chalphy, Altena convinced Arion to stand down and ally with Seliph.
Starting stats and growth rates
Growth rates include holy blood bonuses. The inherited amount of gold can fluctuate between 2,000 and 12,000. Altena will inherit all of Quan's lances; she will always inherit Gáe Bolg, regardless of whether the player obtained it in Chapter 3.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Altena is the only playable Wyvern rider in Genealogy of the Holy War as well as the second flyer you get in the second generation. Altena joins with fairly decent bases and growths, she is also very close to promotion, likely able to promote after clearing the arena. Altena joins with a powerful set of skills: Critical and Adept, she also gets Follow-Up upon promotion, not to mention she also has the Gáe Bolg. While Altena may seem like an incredible combat unit at first, it quickly becomes apparent how, despite her great strength, she is fairly slow and is significantly weighed down by the Gáe Bolg. Altena will rarely double any enemies, so she must either one shot them, get a crit or use a brave weapon. Altena can luckily use swords which do not slow her down as much and she can use most prominent swords due to her A rank in them. Altena as a few other issues however, she is a flyer in Genealogy. This might not seem bad at first, until you realise that Flyers do not get terrain bonuses and don't get increased movement from roads, meaning that Altena is gonna struggle keeping up with the players cavalry. Altena is also fairly frail, her low durability is a major issues in the last two chapters of the game as there are many magic using and bow using enemies that will either one shot her or bring her close to death. Another thing worth noting is how, unlike in most games, enemies in Genealogy will not attack if they are facing a target with very high Defense. As Altena can frequently have 30-40 Defense, many enemies will not even attempt to attack her while she has the Gáe Bolg equipped. While this seems helpful at first, due to the high enemy density in Genealogy it can be rather irritating to defeat the enemies one by one, especially if you're going fast.
Overall, Altena is rather underwhelming for a holy weapon user in the second generation. While she may seem bad in comparison to other gen 2 children, Altena can still have her uses if the player invest enough resources into her.
Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
As Leif's fledgling army fled through the mountains to Hannibal's mansion to rendezvous with the Leonster knights under his protection, Altena and Travant were touring the region, and were informed by Merlock that the army was in fact a bandit group. There, she had a discussion with Travant about his dreams for Thracia and the Munster District, and his resignation to the inevitable damnation upon him for his methods, before leaving, entrusting the situation to Marlock.
Later, Altena travelled to Tahra during the Friege siege against it and took up residence in a house on its outskirts. When Deen came to visit, by Arion's request she gave him the Dragonpike, and reminded and encourage him of his role in protecting Linoan in lieu of Arion himself.
During Leif's march on Munster itself, Altena travelled to the region to oversee Coulter's observations of the battle. When Coulter advocated launching an assault on Munster, Altena objected to the notion on the grounds of the innocent civilians in the line of fire, but was ultimately ignored by Coulter on the grounds that his attack orders came from Travant himself. Disappointed in Coulter's choice, Altena left to return to Thracia.
Stats
Altena is present in Chapter 23 as an enemy. However, she cannot be legitimately fought or defeated, and leaves the battlefield when Coulter begins his attack.

Fire Emblem Heroes
Role
Altena is one of the characters added to the game in the Gullinkambi update, and became available for summoning by players on January 9, 2020. Only one variation of Altena is currently available in Heroes, based on her Genealogy of the Holy War incarnation. Altena is notably the last character to debut as a five-star exclusive to become available at four-star rarity at the end of her initial New Heroes banner; changes to how characters get added to the four-star character pool that took effect with the Special Heroes-based Lovely Gifts update would get extended to New Heroes-based updates with the On Dark Wings update subsequent to the Lovely Gifts update.

Personality and character
As a contrast to her adoptive father's brutal ways, Altena - like Arion - opted for a kinder approach, refusing to turn her weapons against innocent civilians even if it involved opposing Travant's commands.[2] Where possible, she insisted on Travant opting for a less underhanded and brutal way of life for the good of Thracia, and despite her affection for Travant, had no issue with criticising his methodology.[3] Where innocents were not involved, however, Altena was a strong and uncompromising warrior. She had little patience for trickery, and to this end brushed off Leif's initial attempts to convince her of her true heritage and was enraged when confronting Travant about the same.
Love growths and events
Altena is not capable of gaining love growth with anyone.
- In Chapter 9, when she appears as an enemy, Leif can initiate a conversation with Altena which prompts her to leave the battlefield and sets in motion the process of recruiting her.
- Later if the above conversation happened, the turn after Travant has been killed, Altena will reappear as an enemy. She will seek out Seliph and automatically talk to him, which recruits her.
- In Chapter 9, either Hannibal or Finn can initiate a conversation with Altena after Grutia has been seized, awarding her +3 HP.
- In Chapter 10, Leif can initiate a conversation with Altena at any time, awarding her +1 Luck.
- In Chapter 10, Coirpre/Charlot can initiate a conversation with Altena after Miletos has been seized, awarding her +5 Resistance.
- In the Endgame, when Arion appears as an enemy, Altena can talk to him, turning him and his Wyvern Riders into partner units.
