My station doesn’t matter, Celica. I’m here because I was called. I have a duty to perform, and I’ll perform it. No more, and no less.
— Alm

Alm (pronounced /ɑlm/[key][2]; Japanese: アルム Arum) is a youth hailing from the village Ram in the southern peninsula of Valentia, the adoptive grandson of the famous retired knight Mycen and, for a time, the foster brother of Celica. When news reached Ram of General Desaix's coup against Zofia, Alm and four of his friends volunteered to join the Zofian liberation force to oppose the invasion by neighboring Rigel; from there, Alm became a leader of the revolution, successfully fighting his way into Rigel itself. Toward the war's end, he learned of his true identity: Albein Alm Rudolf (Japanese: アルバイン・アルム・ルドルフ Albine Arum Rudlf), the only son and heir of Emperor Rudolf of Rigel, and the cornerstone of Rudolf's gambit to free the world of the corrupting influence of the gods Mila and Duma.[3]

If any given stat at the time of promotion is higher than their promoted class's base stat, there will not be a bonus for that stat; however, if all stats are higher, then they will receive +1 to HP.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Alm is one of the most powerful characters in the game. He has solid bases, good growths by Gaiden standards, and unique access to two powerful weapons in the Royal Sword and the Falchion, and is the best, possibly only, user of the Lightning Sword when you get it. He isn't lacking in any particular stat except his resistance, which will never increase without the use of equipment. Alm is fast enough to double almost anything but mercenaries and their promotions, although the Thunder Sword will weigh him down enough to keep him from doubling some enemies in Act 1. The Royal Sword provides a decent boost to his already decent strength and has very good hit and crit and heals 5 HP every turn, making it more useful than the Thunder Sword at this point. Alm promotes towards the middle of Act 4, rather late as you will likely have promoted most other units twice, maybe with a few third-tier promotions. Upon promotion, Alm gains the use of Bows, offering the ability to attack at range, but he will almost always be better off equipping the Royal Sword. While 10 base defense may not be too terribly impressive, 16 strength is certainly worthwhile, and Alm will still grow strength a few times, increasing it further. The Falchion is more powerful but less accurate than the Royal Sword, though it also provides healing. The Falchion is one of only two ways to hurt and kill Duma when he is below 52 HP, and given Nosferatu's abysmal 50 hit, it is the most reliable way to do so.

Fire Emblem Awakening

Role

In the Outrealms, Alm is one of the Einherjar belonging to Old Hubba. In the Champions of Yore series, Old Hubba summoned him to assist Chrom in defeating an army of female heroes led by Celica. His card was later stolen by Aversa and summoned to attack Chrom's and Celica's combined forces. Later, Aversa again conned Old Hubba into giving her the Einherjar again, forcing Chrom and the Shepherds to face off against Alm and the other legendary heroes once again. Alm reappears in Lost Bloodlines 2, as the leader of a combined force of Archanean and Valentian characters; completion of this chapter allows him to join the army as a playable unit. He again features as an enemy in Rogues & Redeemers 2 and 3, and as an NPC ally in Rogues & Redeemers 1.

Another version of Alm is playable as a bonus SpotPass character, as part of the Gaiden character set.

Alm also has a sword named for him: Alm's Blade. This blade, powerful but without special effect, is purchased using Renown points.

Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia

Role

Alm starts the game as a Fighter under the care of his grandfather, Mycen. When word of the Deliverance reaches Ram Village, Mycen refuses to join the war effort, prompting Alm to join Lukas in returning back to the Deliverance's base. Once there, Clive asks Alm to take over as leader of the Deliverance, a request Alm reluctantly accepts. This disgusts Fernand, and Fernand leaves the Deliverance after a heated argument with Clive. Alm then leads the Deliverance to Zofia Castle and liberates it from the Rigelians.

Alm then leads the Deliverance onto Rigelian soil to drive back the invaders for good. After Celica meets Halcyon at the Sage's Hamlet, Alm is blessed with the ability to promote to a Hero. Alm and the Deliverance's undertaking eventually leads him to Emperor Rudolf at Rigel Castle. Once Rudolf is slain, he reveals Alm to be his son with his dying breath. Alm is distraught over the death of his father, but quickly recovers once learning Celica is being held in Duma Tower.

Alm makes his way through Duma Tower and eventually reaches Celica. Celica, however, attacks Alm while explaining she has been sacrificed to Duma and made into a Witch. Celica begs for Alm to kill her while viciously attacking him, and Alm is forced to stab her in the chest. Alm cradles Celica's lifeless body, until Mila uses the last of her power to resurrect Celica. Mila explains to Alm that Duma has gone insane and must be slain for humanity to live in harmony and grants Alm Falchion before falling into an endless sleep. Reunited and will renewed, Alm and Celica's armies combine to take down Duma.

In the end, Alm lands the killing blow on Duma, releasing the people of Valentia from the gods' control. Rigel and Zofia are united into the One Kingdom of Valentia, and Alm ascends to the throne as its first king.

Personality and character

Alm is headstrong and not a stranger to taking violent action.[4] In Awakening's DLC Alm's personality is emphasized, and he is clearly at odds with Celica's more compassionate and peaceful approach, though it is not to say he does not put thought into Celica's words.[5] Despite his aggressive nature, he is emotionally expressive, being brought to tears over being responsible for the death of his father[6] and his cousin.[7]

Endings

Gaiden

In ages to come, this is what was passed down:
'He who sundered the evil chains of the gods
And established this thousand-year reign
Must never be forgotten: Our Holy King, Alm the First!'

Echoes: Shadows of Valentia

As first king of the One Kingdom of Valentia, Alm spent his life restoring the land to glory. He would be remembered fondly by later generations as Saint-King Alm I, who cast off the gods' oppressive yoke and founded a dynasty that would last a thousand years.

Trivia

  • The continent of Valm (originally Valentia) in Fire Emblem Awakening is renamed after Alm.
  • Alm's hair color has varied somewhat over the years since his first appearance in Gaiden, where his in-game portrait shows him with unmistakably blue hair, yet his appearance on the game's boxart features him with green hair. His artwork in The Complete features him with blue hair. Most modern pieces, including his Awakening and Shadows of Valentia appearances, feature him with green hair.
  • Alm is made left-handed in Echoes: Shadows of Valentia; all his artwork and battle animations feature him with his sword in his left hand. Alm's original Gaiden artwork depicts him as right handed.
  • Alm is referred to as Rudolf II by some NPCs, with his father being referred to as Rudolf I (written as "Rudlf First") in the game's cast listing.
  • Kyle McCarley, Alm's English voice actor, also voices Soren in Heroes.[8]
