Biography

1,000 years before the events of Engage, Alear, a divine dragon, fell into a deep slumber after the defeat of the Fell Dragon. They wake up after 1,000 years to find the seal on the Fell Dragon weakening, with its reawakening imminent. Alear has amnesia.[1]

Fire Emblem Engage

Role

Alear is an Avatar, as well as the main character of Engage. They are forced to be used in every map, and their death causes a game over. In Chapter 11, Alear must be brought to the escape point. For the duration of Chapter 22, they are temporarily renamed to Crpt. Alear (retaining the name the player input). In Chapter 24, an alternate version of Alear, called Past Alear, serves as the boss.

Starting from the end of Chapter 22, Alear can be used as an Emblem. Unlike other Emblems, Alear cannot be equipped as an Emblem Ring. Instead, by standing next to an ally with the engage meter filled and using the Engage+ command, Alear and their ally will both simultaneously enter the engaged state. A unit's bond level with Emblem Alear depends on their support level.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Alear is the main character of Engage, and their death is an automatic game over. They are the first unit in a Dragon type class the player has access to, beating the only other base game Dragon by over 20 chapters, while the other two require downloadable content. This gives Alear unparalleled utility as they will get many useful Type Bonuses from Emblem skills. Due to this, they should almost always stay in their base class line to take advantage of tools such as Emblem Byleth's all-stat Instruct, Emblem Corrin allowing them to use all variations of Dragon Vein, or several Emblems giving more hits or damage with their Engage Attacks.

In general, past the early game, Alear will be relegated to a support role. Their good personal skill and extreme Emblem utility means they often may not have a chance to use their mediocre combat on any given turn. Their default class line gives them access to only swords and eventually arts; they do not have viable 1–2 range options until Wille Glanz is obtained at the end of Chapter 25, therefore Alear should be positioned adjacent to strong combat units whenever possible to allow their personal skill to activate, making good combat units deadlier and slightly tankier.

If the player does not mind losing the Dragon type bonuses, Alear can be reclassed to nearly any physical class and have decent combat potential. They have an innate proficiency in swords, so can obtain S rank in them in General, Paladin, and Griffin Knight. Of these, Griffin Knight is the most popular choice due to flight and staff utility, and is likely Alear's best class besides their starting one.

Alear: That's what you care about? Here, in battle? Let's just settle this.

Alear: Return the ring.
Hortensia: No way! I'm the one who's after the rings. We could have done this the easy way, but no. You had to be stubborn.
Alear: I'm stubborn?

— Alear fighting Hortensia in Chapter 7.

Alear: That ring should be in Lythos Castle. Return it.
Ivy: Hm-hm! If I say no, will you come nearer?

Hortensia: You! Dragon! You're the one who killed my sister, aren't you?

— Alear fighting Zephia in Chapter 14.
Alear: You there! Are you hurt?
Seadall: Who are you?!
Alear: Don't worry-I'm not your enemy. I'm the Divine Dragon.
Seadall: The Divine Dragon, you say... What do you know? My cards spoke true. Unexpected source indeed. Thank you. I am Seadall, a traveling dancer. I was out there rehearsing, and those creatures appeared. A talking ring called me to safety.
Alear: A talking ring, hm?
Seadall: Yes. I believe it's a young princess who fell victim to some sort of curse. Isn't that awful?
Alear: Not a curse, exactly.
Seadall: You know her story, then? Tell me, who is this mysterious ring woman?
Alear: Hand it to me, and we'll find out together.
Seadall: All right.
Alear: Bare your fangs, Emblem of Fates!
Corrin: I am Emblem Corrin. I'll fight with all I have. Thank you for finding me. I'll help ensure the path you decide to walk is the right one.
Alear: Thank you, Emblem Corrin. I'm sorry I kept you waiting for so long.

Zephia: My dear, sweet Divine Dragon. We've been through a lot together, haven't we?
Alear: Zephia... You must have known who I was a thousand years ago.
Zephia: Yes, I believe we met. But the details are hazy. Lord Sombron had so many children, you see. A bug would have had more luck getting my attention.
Alear: Oh? Am I that forgettable?
Zephia: Oh, not at all. You're the Divine Dragon now. But in due time, you'll be me. One tends to lose count of the lives that pass by. You'll understand one day.
Alear: I will never be like you.
Zephia: Haha. Well, it barely matters anyway. You aren't leaving this place. You're going to die right now.

— Alear fighting Zephia in Chapter 23.
You made it this far? You're strong. You should be on my side.
— Past Alear in Chapter 24.
Past Alear: I see that you are looking and staring. You will not win that way. Or are you scared?
Alear: Yes, of course. I've been scared from the start of all this. It's only natural. Scared of losing battles, of losing what's important to me, losing people I care about!
Past Alear: I will admit...I am jealous of you. You have my face, but you say the things you feel...out loud. I am not allowed to show fear. If I say I am afraid, I will be labeled a defect. I follow orders. I don't think. I am like the Corrupted. They are awful.
Alear: You really dislike the Corrupted too!
Past Alear: I hate them. They have killed many of my sisters and my brothers. If I lose to you, they will kill me. No... No, they will kill me, in time, no matter what.
Alear: ... But...you don't die. I'm proof of that.
Past Alear: What did you say? Never mind—let's finish. Come at me, or I will come at you. This is like looking in a mirror. What I see... bothers me.

— Alear fighting Past Alear in Chapter 24.
Past Alear: Veyle? Is that you?
Veyle: What?!
Past Alear: No... Veyle is younger than you are. Forget what I said.
Veyle: Are you...related to Veyle?
Past Alear: She is my youngest sibling and littlest sister. I had many sisters and many brothers. Most of them have been killed. In awful ways. Will Father dispose of Veyle too? If I think about that, it makes me sad. I would like to stand by my sister. Always. An ally. A friend.
Veyle: She's that important to you.
Past Alear: You look too much like her. It bothers me. I'll defeat you now. Whoever you are, you are not my little sister.
Veyle: You're right. I'm not your little sister. Still, I'm glad I was here with you to...hear all of that. Thank you, Sister.

— Veyle fighting Past Alear in Chapter 24.
Alear: Mother!
Corrupted Lumera: Here we are at last, Alear... How about we train here? You'll be the one fighting. The Emblem— Ugh...
Alear: What? You said that back at...
Corrupted Lumera: The Emblem lends you their... Ugh... No! These memories... I wanted to spend time with you. To chat for hours, take long walks together, share meals... And then... Then...
Alear: Stop, please! It's all right. There are lots of things I wish we'd done too. We weren't able to. But that's OK. It's better than seeing you suffer like this. You can still surrender Mother. Please. For me.
Corrupted Lumera: No. Lord Sombron gave me more time with my child. I refuse to waste it. I won't let anyone take that away. Not even you. I waited for so long! A thousand years of waiting!

— Alear fighting Corrupted Lumera in Chapter 25.
Sombron: You are pathetic. As if spurning me to be a Divine Dragon was not enough... Patricide? Unforgivable.
Alear: You killed your own children—tried to destroy the world—for your own selfish desires. You're the one who is beyond forgiveness.
Sombron: I said your world meant nothing to me. Its people, my children...you. Once I leave, I will forget you. Even if we met again, I would not recall your face.
Alear: In other words, you'll make the same mistakes as before. So which of us is pathetic?

— Alear fighting Sombron in Chapter 26.
Celica: Alear, you are a kind soul. However, the world cannot be saved with kindness alone.
Alear: I've learned it takes strength as well.
Celica: One alone is a plan only for failure. Both are essential. Now show me you understand.

— Alear and Celica in The Caring Princess.
Lyn: These plains, the green land, the wind...they raised me to be strong. And you?
Alear: I'm still improving, but I've gained strength during our journey.
Lyn: I'm glad to hear you're feeling stronger, but I won't be holding back!

— Alear and Lyn in The Lady of the Plains.
Eirika: Fighting you here... It feels so strange.
Alear: I feel it too. Facing you like this is making me stronger.
Eirika: You've been strong from the start. Now, show me you have the skills to back up your strength.

— Alear and Eirika in The Azure Twin.
Ike: I like that look in your eye. It's clear your fighting spirit is strong.
Alear: I know the only way I'll beat you is to fight harder than you.
Ike: Then you understand what lies ahead. Now show me you can fight as well as you can talk.

— Alear and Ike in The Radiant Hero.
Lucina: What's wrong, Alear? You won't win just by standing there.
Alear: Your stance has no openings. I don't see how I could hit you, no matter where I strike.
Lucina: Doubt will only dull your attacks. Trust in yourself, and come at me with everything!
Alear: Understood! Here I come!

— Alear and Lucina in The Exalt.
Byleth: Depending on the wielder, power can be used for good or evil with equal ease. That's why the heart of the one controlling the power is important.
Alear: The heart. That would mean... My heart determines how the power is used... All right, Byleth. I'm ready!

— Alear and Byleth in The Instructor.
Corrin: I remember how I felt when I stood on the field that day...
Alear: This is where your destiny branched, isn't it? I think I can understand what you went through.
Corrin: Do not swing timidly without resolve. You must genuinely try to kill me!
Alear: As you say, Corrin. I've chosen my path, and I'll travel as far as it takes me!

— Alear and Corrin in The Crux of Fate.
Sigurd: On what do you stake your life? Tell me-how do you imagine the world once your war ends?
Alear: I wish for a peaceful world—for myself, my friends, everyone! A world that we will build for ourselves, where no one will be hurt by the greed of others.
Sigurd: It requires power to turn a dream into reality. Show me you have what it takes.

— Alear and Sigurd in The Holy Knight.
Leif: I have been waiting, Alear. Are you prepared?
Alear: Of course, Leif! I will face you anywhere, at any time.
Leif: Then let us begin. A fair battle between equals..

— Alear and Leif in The Sage Lord.
Micaiah: I remember that battle as if it were yesterday. It's almost like I'm there again. The past and the future are together in my heart.
Alear: You're a strong combatant, but I'm not going to lose!
Micaiah: Very well! I'd be let down if you held anything back!

— Alear and Micaiah in The Dawn Maiden.
Alear: You seem much more focused-more intense than usual.
Roy: My sword, the Binding Blade, was kept in this land for centuries. My memory of retrieving it must be granting me additional power.
Alear: If a memory can grant power, then I'll give you a fight we'll both remember!

— Alear and Roy in The Young Lion.
Marth: Much has come to pass-meetings, farewells, and reunions alike. How are you faring?
Alear: I could never put those feelings into words. So... I'll answer you with my weapon.
Marth: I would ask for nothing less!
Alear: Here I come!

— Alear and Marth in The Hero-King.
Hector: Ok, Alear, give me all you've got!
Alear: It's definitely going to take everything I have to stand up to that axe of yours. But I'm not giving up. I set out to prove my worth to you, and that's what I'm going to do!
Hector: Good to hear. Have at it, then!

— Alear and Hector in The Brash General.
Camilla: I forgot to tell you, I'm terrible when it comes to restraining myself. If you don't fight me with all you've got, I may just be forced to really kill you.
Alear: I know you're not an opponent to take lightly, Emblem Camilla.
Camilla: Well then, it seems I have no need for concern. In that case, I won't hold myself back.

— Alear and Camilla in The Doting Sister.
Soren: The time has come to unleash all my power.
Alear: Show us what you've got, Emblem Soren! Give us the chance to prove that we are worthy allies!

— Alear and Soren in The Radiant Strategist.
Chrom: I can tell by your form that you're no stranger to battle. You know what you're doing.
Alear: I've learned a lot along the way, but I still have a goal to achieve.
Chrom: You've got as much determination as Robin does. I can see it in your eyes. Now, let's get started. I'm ready when you are!

— Alear and Chrom in The Shepherd Exalt.
Robin: I'm curious to see what you've got. Show me the leader we're joining forces with.
Alear: Happy to, Emblem Robin. Our strategies may not impress a tactician like you, but the bonds among my allies are strong!
Robin: I think Chrom was right. You do seem worthy of our trust.

— Alear and Robin in The Shepherd Exalt.
Veronica: You've come far. Well done.
Alear: If we defeat you here, do you promise you'll join us?
Veronica: You have little to gain from that. I, on the other hand, stand to acquire a new Hero for my forces.

— Alear and Veronica in The Lonely Heir.
???: Are you...the Divine Dragon?
Alear: Yes. And I'll be taking back that bracelet now.

— Alear fighting Corrupted Fogado in Fell Xenologue 1.
Céline: I will show no mercy to the Corrupted. Not even you. Though...I've wanted to fight you all along.
Alear: Why would you want to fight me?
Céline: Were we allies, it would be unthinkable to wonder who would win in a fight to the death. But now I can satisfy my curiosity. I'm so happy! A flower like you will fall so beautifully!

— Alear fighting Corrupted Céline in Fell Xenologue 2.
Alfred: Oh, Divine One... Seeing you in such a pitiful state breaks my heart. It's such a shame...
Alear: Alfred, please. Listen to me. I don't want to make things harder for you, but...
Alfred: I bet you were told to say that. My old friend... Don't worry. I'll help you out. I'll erase you so utterly, not even your corpse will remain. No one will ever coerce you again.

— Alear fighting Corrupted Alfred in Fell Xenologue 2.
Alcryst: You. Who are you really? It's been bothering me for a while. Why have you assumed the form of the Divine Dragon?
Alear: I haven't assumed this form. Would you believe me if I said I came from another world?
Alcryst: So, you'll continue this farce, pretending to be the Divine One. How intriguingly brazen of you. Until I behead you and ascertain your true identity, you may go on entertaining me.

— Alear fighting Corrupted Alcryst in Fell Xenologue 3.
Diamant: Divine Dragon? Have you returned to us?!
Alear: I'm not who you think I am. Please, think of me as a stranger when we fight.
Diamant: I cannot fight you. I won't risk losing you again. It has been awful here since you died. I believed all along that the nations should stop squabbling and go back to the way we were! I beg you, please, guide us to unity once more.
Alear: I'm sorry. Only the Divine Dragon of this world could have done that, but... I can still take on the burden of stopping this conflict through the battle you wish to avoid. Forgive me for fighting you!

— Alear fighting Corrupted Diamant in Fell Xenologue 3.

This is Alear, a Hero from the continent of Elyos! Apparently, he’s a Divine Dragon! Alear slept for a thousand years on a floating island called the Somniel. When he awoke, he couldn’t remember a thing, save for his name. What’s more, he has a special power: he can call upon Emblems, Heroes from other worlds contained within rings! It’s not quite the same as Askran summoning, but when it comes to calling upon the power of other worlds, we’re birds of a feather! Let’s give it a shot… Emblem, Engage! Hee hee!

Trivia

  • If a female Alear is reclassed into the Axe Fighter, Mage, Berserker, Great Knight, Wolf Knight, Sage, or Mage Knight classes, she will tie her hair up into a ponytail. She will maintain this ponytail even when wearing other outfits while at the Somniel.
  • In Heroes, like the Grima-possessed Robins and Sothis, the two Legendary variants of Alear stand out from most playable dragon and beast units in that they do not transform into a dragon, though unlike said Robins and Sothis, this is because they have no such animations at all.
