Abyss (pronounced /əbɪs/[key]) was introduced as a part of the downloadable content of Fire Emblem: Three Houses. It's located beneath Garreg Mach Monastery at the center of Fódlan, and it's a safe haven for those who have been shunned by the people on the surface of Fódlan.
History
Abyss was created in agreement with the Church of Seiros to be a place where people can take refuge if they so need it. Some time before the events of the game, Aelfric created the Ashen Wolves house, the unofficial fourth house that is not recognized by the Officer's Academy. In the Cindered Shadows side story, it is explained that Aelfric created the Ashen Wolves to gather those who bear the Crests of the Four Apostles, in order to resurrect Byleth's mother, Sitri, by performing a ritual known as the Rite of Rising. The ritual goes wrong, and Aelfric fuses with Sitri's corpse to form an Umbral Beast, and once the beast is slain, Archbishop Rhea disbands the Ashen Wolf house, and its members are freed from the confines of Abyss.
