“ | I don't remember much of my mother. But I do remember that she always seemed so sad... | ” | — Tine |
---|
Tine (pronounced /ˈtineɪ/[key][1]; Japanese: ティニー Teeny) is a noblewoman of Grannvale's Friege family, and is the daughter of the late Lady Tailtiu. Following her mother's demise, Tine reluctantly served her uncle Bloom as a warrior fighting on the behalf of the Grannvale Empire in the Munster District, but defected upon meeting her long-lost brother Arthur and joined Seliph's liberation army.
If Tailtiu died or was not married in the course of the first generation, Tine's role is filled by Linda, her substitute and cousin.
Biography
Tine was born during Tailtiu's exile in Silesse following the events of the Battle of Belhalla, and for a short time she lived there in hiding with her mother and her elder brother, Arthur. However, when Tine was still very young, Tailtiu's elder brother Bloom arrived in Silesse and found them, abducting Tailtiu and Tine while inadvertently leaving Arthur behind.[2] The two were taken to Ulster, the seat of Bloom's rule over the Munster District, and imprisoned in the castle, where they were subjected to years of constant abuse and torment from Bloom's wife Hilda. Tailtiu did everything she could to protect Tine from Hilda until her death; following her mother's demise, Tine was left with a single pendant as a memento of her.[3]
By Grann 777, long after Tailtiu's death, Tine had entered Bloom's employ as one of his chief fighters in the Munster District. However, despite her service to Bloom, she frequently broke rank to assist the villagers suppressed by Bloom's rule.[4] Late in the siege of Leonster following its recapture by Leif, Bloom deployed Tine as the leader of a small unit of mages to launch an attack on the western Fort Melgen, which had recently been captured by Seliph. During this skirmish she encountered Arthur, who upon spotting her pendant identified her as his sister and convinced her to join him on Seliph's side. She continued to serve under Seliph for the rest of the war, eventually pitting herself against both Bloom and Hilda in the name of avenging her mother.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Tine joins in Chapter 7 in the second generation of Genealogy of the Holy War. She joins underleveled, only at level 3, when other units in the player's army are likely ten levels higher or more at the time, and her bases are quite low; as such, Tine will require dedicated investment and a proper inheritance to become useful. She inherits good skill, luck, and speed growths and tomes from Tailtiu, but her magic growth is low unless her father is Azelle or Claud, and she lacks Follow-Up without inheriting it from her father or the Follow-Up Ring from her mother.
Tine inherits Wrath from her mother, guaranteeing her attacks crit when she is below half health; her defenses are very weak, so exploiting Wrath is inherently risky. Tine does not have the base weapon level to inherit the Thoron tome her mother starts with; without it, the strongest weapon she can use is Elthunder. Even though Tine has Wrath, her inability to use more powerful tomes before promotion limits her combat potential, as she may not be able to one-shot many of the stronger enemies even with a critical hit.
Tine's promotion improves her weapon levels; she gains the thunder level to wield Thoron, the staff level to use staves such as Physic and Warp, and the sword level to use all of the magic swords. Her high magic and access to staves make her one of the best status staff users in the second generation thanks to possessing one more movement than the priests. Promotion additionally grants her Adept and statistical increases. However, it only gives Tine 1 additional movement; Genealogy of the Holy War's large maps are dominated by mounted units, and because of that, the mount-less Tine falls behind the front line, making it even more difficult for Tine to contribute without the player slowing themselves down to accommodate for her.
The best father for Tine is Azelle, as he passes down Follow-Up and his Minor Fjalar Holy Blood, increasing her fire magic level to B—which allows her to use Elfire at base and Bolganone after promotion—and boosts her speed and magic growths, increasing her effectiveness with staves and in combat. While Lewyn is a good pairing for Arthur—whom he passes Forseti to—he offers little to Tine, hurting her combat in comparison to Azelle; Minor Forseti blood boosts Tine's speed considerably and increases her wind level—allowing her to use Elwind at base and Tornado after promotion—but she will lack Follow-Up, which is more reliable than Critical or Adept. Claud passes down a good magic growth (though not as high as with Azelle) and increases her staff level to A after promotion, but passes no skills down. Both Lex and Arden pass down Vantage to Tine, allowing her to attack first during enemy phase at the same HP threshold as Wrath. Lex can also pass down minor Nàl blood, which improves her HP and defense, and Paragon, which increases her experience gain and frees up money for staves. However, Lex will hinder her magic growth, and is a desirable father for many other units.

Personality
As a result of the years of abuse she suffered, Tine was initially very meek and submissive, obeying Bloom's commands and shrugging off his taunts to avoid further torment.[5] After meeting Arthur and joining Seliph, while still timid and quiet, she quickly became more assertive and determined to right the wrongs she and her family had inflicted upon the world by properly helping its people.[6] While still initially terrified of Bloom and Hilda, she nonetheless worked past this out of sheer determination to avenge Tailtiu. She also, however, maintained that most of her family was not evil even when Arthur still lusted for vengeance, insisting that Bloom, Ishtore and Ishtar were always decent to her and that she didn't wish to fight the latter.[7] She quickly developed an extremely close bond with and respect for Arthur upon meeting him.

I found out just recently that it was King Bloom who took them from me. I also found out that my mother had passed away but that my sister was still alive! YOU are my sister! I've come all the way from Silesia for you!" — Arthur, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War

Tine: Well, we didn't go there willingly. We were taken by force by King Bloom's men. And then that's where my mother died.
