Thracia is not like it used to be... I want to fight for the people!
— Coirpre

Coirpre (Japanese: コープル Corpul) is the adoptive son of the Thracian general Hannibal, biologically one of the two children of the dancer Silvia, and a distant relative of the Edda nobility of Grannvale. He and his sister, Lene, were left at an orphanage in Dahna in his infancy by Silvia, and Hannibal subsequently adopted him.[1] Trained as a priest of the Church of Bragi, he influenced Hannibal to defect and ally with Seliph's liberation army.

If Silvia was not married in the course of the first generation, Coirpre's role is filled by Charlot.

Biography

Coirpre was captured in the Munster District child hunts and held prisoner in Fort Kelbeth, on the border between Munster and Thracia. He was freed by Leif and the Fiana Freeblades in their raid on the fort and taken to one of the nearby villages, after which he eventually returned to Hannibal's care at Meath Castle. When Leif and the Magi arrived there some time later, Coirpre gave Leif a Warp staff out of thanks for saving him from Kelbeth.

When Seliph's liberation army seized Meath with the intent of claiming the rest of Thracia, Coirpre was held hostage by King Travant in a bid to get Hannibal to co-operate with his orders to fight Seliph, and was left under the guard of General Distler at Luthecia Castle. When Seliph conquered Luthecia, Coirpre was freed and warned Seliph of Hannibal's plight. He joined Seliph's army and convinced Hannibal to stand down and accompany him.

Role

Coirpre is a playable character during the second generation, if Silvia was married and still alive at the end of Chapter 5. In Chapter 9, Coirpre will join when Luthecia is seized if Hannibal is still alive.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Coirpre joins as a level 1 Priest in Chapter 9; he is very under-leveled for a unit that joins so late. Coirpre can struggle to promote without Paragon, as a personal skill inherited from Lex or from the Paragon Ring. He can use Warp and Return at base; if he is left at the home castle with another unit, he can repeatedly use either staff to send a unit to the home castle and gain significant experience each turn—enough to reasonably reach promotion in one chapter even without Paragon, though it will require more staff uses and repairs, and thus gold, without Paragon. He has Physic at base for long-range heals, but other units won't always be in its range.

Coirpre will always inherit Miracle, Adept, and minor Bragi Holy Blood from Silvia. Miracle will occasionally increase his survivability, but only if he is reduced to a specific HP threshold that is close to death; Adept is useless for him until promotion, and even then, it's situational, as he is often too slow to use it reliably after it—regardless of his speed, his frailty, poor tome levels, and lack of Follow-Up prevent him from being a meaningful combat unit. Coirpre will always have A staves at base due to his Bragi Blood, allowing him to use every staff in the game but Valkyrie; however, most fathers cannot pass staves to him, and every other staff-wielding unit in the second generation is available earlier and all but Lana have more movement. However, even without having Paragon, he can close the level gap quicker with a high-rank staff: Silence and Sleep both give him a guaranteed level up, and as Fortify requires an A rank like Rescue, he can use it at base. Fortify has 10 uses and grants him 85 EXP per use, thus giving Coirpre eight or nine levels before it breaks and has to be fixed.

Coirpre has 5 movement before and after promotion; 5 move is less than most infantry and all mounted units, meaning he will fall behind every unit but those that also have 5 move. Coirpre's low movement prevents him from using Rescue as a means of increasing a unit's mobility because he's too far behind, and he won't always be able to help with Physic or Restore unless there's combat to stop who is on the frontlines. The only means of increasing Coirpre's movement is through the Leg Ring, which gives its bearer +3 movement; the Leg Ring, however, is a highly competitive item, as every unit benefits from additional movement. Coirpre's sister Lene is a strong competitor for the Leg Ring, as it significantly improves her mobility—especially with the Knight Ring—and allows her to reach better places to dance from. Additionally, giving Coirpre the Leg Ring requires that it be unavailable until Chapter 9, when units such as Lene or Seliph that compete for the Leg Ring can use it significantly earlier. Lene's dance can help him, but he's not the only one that needs a second action for the turn.

While staff utility is useful, Coirpre has to compete with every other staff user, all of whom will likely surpass him. Leif can use all staves and has a mount, and along with Nanna/Jeanne will be able to handle most of the army's staff needs. They cannot heal as much as Coirpre as their magic is lower, but with Mend, Recover, and Fortify they will be sufficient. While mounted staff users will not be as effective with status staves, the other three foot staff users available have either better base magic, better access to money, and/or better movement, and there are only two status staves available to use.

If Coirpre's father is Claud, he gains major Bragi Holy Blood, granting him ★ rank staves, which effectively grants him the ability to wield Valkyrie (as he could already wield every other staff). Major Bragi blood also boosts his magic growth by 20%, allowing him to heal more HP or inflict a greater number of units with statuses from the Silence and Sleep staves. Claud is the best father for Coirpre, but only marginally; Coirpre does not vary much with different fathers, and will always be held back by his 5 move and late join time. Claud also has no skills to pass down.

Aside from Claud, Coirpre can also inherit staves from Lewyn; Lewyn will pass major Forseti blood and the Forseti tome to him, greatly boosting his speed, but he will still lack Follow-Up. He also passes down the Forseti tome, which grants him great combat after promotion, though Ced and Arthur are both better than him in this regard. Azelle grants Coirpre minor Fjalar blood, increasing his magic and speed growths and increasing his fire level, but fire is the heaviest set of tomes in the game, and Coirpre will not inherit any staves. Lex can pass Paragon to Coirpre, helping him level up faster, but he gains little from Nál blood or from Vantage. Each of the aforementioned fathers—and those not mentioned—do not solve Coirpre's low movement, and none offer much to his sister Lene as well.

If Silvia is dead or unmarried by the end of Chapter 5, the player may instead recruit Coirpre's substitute Charlot. Charlot, like Coirpre, is a level 1 Priest; he does not have A staves like Coirpre, but does have the staff level to use Warp and Rescue. While Coirpre will always inherit Adept and Miracle, Charlot will always have Paragon as a personal skill, allowing him to reach promotion much sooner. Additionally, Charlot has an event with Hannibal that grants him the only obtainable Berserk staff in the game—Berserk has a number of niche uses, particularly against late-game bosses. Both Coirpre and Charlot have the same low move, however, and both are outclassed by every prior staff-user available. Additionally, recruiting Charlot requires that the player forsake Lene in favor of her substitute Laylea as well; while Laylea has Charm to boost nearby allies, Lene can inherit the Leg and Knight Rings, which Laylea would need significant assistance to get the necessary gold, as they are very expensive.

Role

Coirpre appears as an ally unit in Chapter 3. Unable to move, he can be rescued and brought to the top right house. If so, he will give a Warp Staff at the end of Chapter 7.
