— Zelgius, to Ranulf

Zelgius (pronounced /ˈzɛlgiəs/[key][1]; Japanese: ゼルギウス Zelgius) was a highly esteemed knight of the Begnion Empire, a servant to Chancellor Sephiran, and a follower of Apostle Sanaki's causes. As the general of the Begnion Imperial Central Army, the elite armed forces entrusted with the defense of the Begnion capital Sienne,[2] he commanded the armies of Begnion in support of Crimea during the Mad King's War. Three years later, he and the Central Army led the rest of Begnion's forces against the Laguz Alliance, where he fought despite his own misgivings to prevent the treacherous senators of Begnion from harming Sanaki or Sephiran.

Zelgius was arguably even better known for his other identity: the Black Knight (Japanese: 漆黒の騎士 Jet Black Knight), the strongest of the Four Riders of Daein during the Mad King's War and the right-hand man to the Mad King Ashnard himself. As the Black Knight he was an enigmatic warrior, never seen outside his blessed, pitch-black armor, and was feared for his immense strength. His obsession with the former Daein general Gawain evolved into a bitter rivalry with Gawain's son, Ike, who swore to slay the Black Knight and avenge his father. Believed to have been killed by Ike in the war's last days, the Black Knight resurfaced three years later during Daein's struggle for independence from the Begnion garrison, as an ally of the Daein freedom fighter Micaiah.

Biography

Origins

Zelgius during his time with the Daein army, with his brand visible on his exposed back.

Zelgius was born in Daein to a father who had laguz ancestry. He was the first in this line who had proof of this heritage surface in him in the form of a brand on his back. As a result, Zelgius was hated by his own family and regarded as a shame, so he grew up lonely and unable to trust anybody. He joined the Daein military to attempt to escape this abuse, but feared being discovered and treated the same way by his new comrades, so he attempted to hide his brand and—as he later discovered—his slow aging by rarely removing his armor, although he knew that it would not last and he would eventually have to leave to preserve his secret.[3]

During his tenure in the army, Zelgius served under the command of General Gawain of the Four Riders and studied swordplay from him. At this time Gawain was legendary for his strength and prowess, and Zelgius quickly came to idolize him for his talent with the sword. Although he was resigned to his fate to leave the army eventually, he acknowledged that Gawain would be the one thing he would miss about it once the time came.[3] However, Gawain soon abandoned the Daein army after his wife, Elena, was entrusted with Lehran's Medallion. Zelgius was devastated by this news and swore to someday find and duel Gawain, determined to know if he could one day surpass a man he viewed as invincible.[4]

Shortly after the Serenes Massacre, Zelgius received a visit at the Daein barracks from a mysterious sage: Lehran. Zelgius revealed both his Branded nature and his issues to Lehran, who saw something of himself in Zelgius' pain and isolation. Lehran made Zelgius an offer: once he chose to depart from the Daein army, he would come to Lehran and assist him in achieving his plans. Lehran promised that at the very least, Zelgius would no longer be alone, which convinced Zelgius to readily accept Lehran's offer.[3] Zelgius left the Daein army some time later, after Gawain had departed, and entered Lehran's service.

A Begnion legend

When Lehran joined the Begnion senate as Sephiran, Zelgius joined the Begnion military and quickly rose through the ranks to earn himself the title of Earl of Kadohl. By the time of the Mad King's War, he had developed a reputation as a hero of Begnion and was revered throughout the army's ranks.[5] He was considered by Levail, who would later serve at his side, as the last true knight and embodiment of gallantry in the Begnion's ranks following the departure of the dracoknights Shiharam and Haar.[6]

Early in their time in Begnion, Zelgius and Sephiran traveled to Gallia to track down Gawain—now known as Greil—and Elena. By the time they found them, they were too late: Greil had touched the Lehran's Medallion and been driven berserk, slaughtering countless friends and killing Elena before fainting himself. They encountered Greil's young children, Mist and Ike, and discovered that Mist was immune to the medallion's effects. Sephiran purged Ike's memory of watching his mother die, and decided that the medallion would be safer in Mist's hands for the time being. Zelgius helped take the two children, Greil, and Elena's corpse home, then the two left.

The Mad King's right hand

The Black Knight in his final duel with Greil.

Sephiran's ambition to unseal the dark god through galdrar had failed, so he began to pursue an alternative plan: use Ashnard, the new king of Daein, to engage Tellius in a continent-spanning war. To help facilitate this and to keep an eye on Ashnard, Sephiran had Zelgius enter Ashnard's employ, under the guise of an anonymous warrior only known as the Black Knight. Despite revealing nothing about his identity, the Black Knight easily won Ashnard's trust with his immense strength and became one of Ashnard's most trusted agents.[7] As the Black Knight, Zelgius made use of numerous mysterious artifacts which were presumably provided to him by Sephiran: he wielded the regalia sword Alondite, he wore a set of Ashera-blessed black armor which rendered him invicible to weapons which had not been similarly blessed, and he used warp powder to instantly transport himself. He also provided Ashnard with a second set of blessed armor as a gift.[8]

When the Mad King's War begun, Sephiran ordered the Black Knight to take the medallion from Gawain and return it to Ashnard, to begin the process of freeing the dark god. He eventually tracked Gawain—now calling himself "Greil" and leading a mercenary troop—to the border forests of Gallia, where he and his mercenaries were fighting Daein forces to safely escort Elincia to Gallia. By the time he arrived, Greil stood in the middle of a standoff between the Daein army, led by Petrine, and a Gallian army led by Ranulf. The Black Knight convinced Petrine to retreat, then retreated himself.

That evening, the Black Knight found Greil in the forests near Gebel Castle, where Greil and his mercenaries had been lodging. The two fought a duel, where despite the Black Knight's insistence, Greil refused to wield Ragnell (offered to him by the Black Knight "so that I might see you at your full strength") and continued to wield his axe, Urvan. Greil recognised the Black Knight as his former student and remarked that Zelgius had no chance against "the man who taught [him] how to fight", but the duel was a brief one and ended with the Black Knight impaling Greil, right in front of Greil's son, Ike. The Black Knight demanded to be given Lehran's Medallion, threatening to kill Ike and Mist if Greil would not comply, but was quickly forced to warp away by the sound of a roar from Caineghis.

Even then, Zelgius was dissatisfied with the outcome of his duel with Greil and felt that he had killed him much too easily. He would later learn from Ike that, following the death of Elena, Greil had crippled his sword arm in case he was ever driven mad by Lehran's Medallion again, and that was the reason for Zelgius's easy win.[9]

Double agent in the Mad King's War

The Black Knight later traveled to the port city of Toha to check on the progress of the Daein general Mackoya, who had come to subjugate the city ahead of schedule while following rumors about the journeys of Ike, the Greil Mercenaries, and their laguz allies after their attack on the Canteus Castle prison. At Mackoya's request, the Black Knight chose to stand aside and leave the task of apprehending Ike to Mackoya's soldiers, to give them a much-needed opportunity to fight.[10] After Mackoya's men failed to stop the Greil Mercenaries, the Black Knight emerged to fight them himself, but was too late to prevent them from leaving. Ranulf engaged him in a duel to prevent him from interfering with Ike's escape and was soon overwhelmed,[11] saved only by the arrival of Sephiran, who "distracted" the Black Knight while Ranulf escaped.

After this battle the Black Knight reported to Ashnard in Melior, who assigned him to lead an invasion of Gallia while they bided their time for another chance to take Elincia and the medallion. For this mission, the Black Knight was instructed to avoid provoking Gallia into sending their full forces against Daein just yet, likely in anticipation of ensuring Gallia had the strength to keep fighting in Ashnard's planned Tellius-wide war.[12]

Later in the war, after Ike won the support of Begnion's army and set out to attack Daein, the Black Knight passed this news and his low opinion of Ike's potential as a warrior on to Ashnard. He also informed Ashnard of the survival of two herons, and Ashnard entrusted him with abducting one of them and ensuring that both the heron and the medallion enter Ashnard's possession.[13] Soon after the Crimean army's victory in Talrega, the Black Knight oversaw the delivery of the medallion to Ena and Petrine at Daein Keep.

Even while serving as the Black Knight, Zelgius continued to serve his original role as a Begnion general in the Mad King's War. Following Ike's capture of Nevassa, the return of Sephiran to Begnion allowed Sanaki to quickly marshal official Senate support for reinforcing Ike and the Crimean army with Begnion troops, and they entrusted Zelgius with a full battalion to reinforce the Crimean army. Zelgius arrived in Nevassa, put himself and his men under Ike's command, then set up camp for his battalion.[14] After the expedition at Palmeni Shrine, Ike chose to pass on the right to govern Daein to Zelgius and departed to invade Crimea with a troop of Zelgius's soldiers. Zelgius remained behind with the rest of his battalion and assured Ike that he would deliver reinforcements if he needed them in Crimea.

Moment of fate

The Black Knight duels Ike at Nados Castle.

As the war progressed, Zelgius took a keener interest in Ike's growth as a warrior. He appeared at the battle of Castle Delbray to observe from a far, and was challenged to another duel by Ike. Ike failed to injure him at all because of his blessed armor, and the Black Knight instructed him to wield Ragnell the next time they fought so that they could have a proper fight.

Soon after, the Black Knight concocts a plan to abduct Leanne, one of the two surviving herons, from Phoenicis Castle for use by Ashnard. After carefully planning to ensure that King Tibarn was well away from Phoenicis,[15] he infiltrated the castle, ambushed and mortally wounded Lotz, and stole Leanne away under threat of murdering her comatose father, Lorazieh. He then delivered Leanne to Ashnard, who had her imprisoned at Grinea Tower in preparation for awakening the dark god through the use of galdrar. After Gallia and Phoenicis' armies joined the war on Crimea's side following the battle at Marhaut range, Ashnard ordered the Black Knight to divide up the Daein forces to defend both Fort Pinell and Nados Castle, and then inquired after Ashnard's order to have Ena killed. While Ashnard no longer cared about Ena's fate, so long as she did not interfere with his dragon mount, the Black Knight chose to proceed with executing her.

While the Phoenicis and Gallian armies engaged Daein forces at Nados Castle, the Black Knight arrived at the scene of a battle and defeated an entire unit by himself, then left the defense of the castle to General Hafedd while he dealt with Ena. After promising to deliver an apology to Nasir for her, the Black Knight struck her with a grievous but non-fatal blow, just as Ike arrived. Ike challenged him to single combat, wielding Ragnell, to avenge his father once and for all. Ike revealed as they fought that Greil had crippled himself, explaining the Black Knight's easy victory, and Zelgius realized that Ike might someday equal Greil in strength and be a worthier opponent. In order to ensure that Ike reached his potential and that he someday had a worthy battle, Zelgius let Ike win their duel.[16] Once the Black Knight fell, his soldiers triggered a trap built into Nados itself that caused it to collapse, and Ike fled the battlefield with Ena, Nasir, and Mist, leaving the Black Knight's body behind.

Having secretly survived the collapse of Nados, Zelgius continued to assist with the Begnion war effort under his own identity, up until the end. Through the last days of the campaign, Zelgius and the Begnion army assisted Ike by taking care of retreating Daein forces to allow Ike and his army the ability to focus on the troops confronting them without worrying about anything else.[17] On Sephiran's orders, Zelgius and his army traveled to Melior for the final battle against Ashnard to provide reinforcements and, if Ike lost the battle, ensure Elincia's safety.[18] Zelgius left the Begnion soldiers in Ike's company with him to ensure Crimea's security at Elincia's request, then returned to Daein to continue his work there.

The Black Knight lives

The Black Knight was widely believed to have died to Ike at Nados, if not by Ike's hand, then by the rubble of Nados collapsing on top of him. Bastian, one of Elincia's retainers, ordered Nados's ruins to be searched the next day but they found no trace of the Black Knight in the castle at all.[19] This belief continued to be held for the following three years, until the last days of the Daein Liberation Army's war for independence from the Begnion garrison.

On the night that news came of Sephiran's investigation of the garrison's misdeeds, Micaiah, the army's leader, took leave of their camp to sit alone in a nearby wood, where she was ambushed by Jarod. Before Jarod could kill her, the Black Knight warped in and shoved Jarod away. Though he did not explain how he knew of the attack to Micaiah, he and Micaiah took on Jarod's men in the dark and won. The Black Knight then attempted to finish off Jarod himself, but before he could, Jarod's aide Alder took the lethal blow on behalf of his master. At Micaiah's insistence the Black Knight let Jarod go to bury Alder, and Sothe soon arrived and instantly assumed the Black Knight to be a threat to Micaiah. While explaining the situation, Micaiah sensed an impending doom caused by her choice to spare Jarod, and despite Sothe's objections the Black Knight swore to protect and serve Micaiah no matter what.

The following day, Jarod retaliated with a defiant fire-bombing assault on Nevassa, and Micaiah led the Daein Liberation Army in a siege of Daein Keep to stop Jarod. The Black Knight assisted in this fight as well. Though he requested that Micaiah stay back to keep herself safe as the army's inspiration, she insisted that she would fight as everyone else did, reminding him of an unknown woman.[20] After the Liberation Army's recapture of Daein Keep, the Black Knight was present for King Pelleas's coronation, but he left Daein soon after.

News of the Black Knight's role in the restoration of Daein soon reached Crimea. Elincia passed this news onto Ike after the defeat of Ludveck.

Against the Laguz Alliance

Ranulf challenges Zelgius to a battle.

Soon after the restoration of Daein, war erupted between Begnion and the Laguz Alliance after the Begnion senate's role in causing the Serenes Massacre was revealed by Rafiel. By the time the Alliance had taken its first victories in Flaguerre and Mugill, Zelgius and the Central Army were on their way to pin the Alliance between their own strength and the northern force. To slow their advance and give the Alliance time to finish off the northern armies, Ranulf devised a plan where the hawks and ravens would raid the Central Army's supply convoy, but this plan was betrayed and leaked to Zelgius by Naesala. Instead of a supply convoy, the hawks found themselves attacking a fully prepared Central Army with Zelgius at the lead. Zelgius fought with King Tibarn himself for a time, completely shrugging off all of Tibarn's attacks, and revealed that the fight had been a diversion and that Tibarn should return to Phoenicis, where he found that his country had been devastated. After this battle, Zelgius met with General Levail of the northern armies for the first time, and when their armies merged under Zelgius's command, Levail became his right-hand man.

Despite the immense setback to Phoenicis and the threat posed by Zelgius, Tibarn, the Greil Mercenaries, and the rest of the Alliance were determined to continue. Their next goal was to cross the Ribahn, and to do this Soren concocted a plan: while the core of the Alliance would fight head-on, Ranulf would lead a unit behind the enemy lines to disrupt the Central Army, then the Greil Mercenaries would raid a supply camp to frighten the senators staying there and have them force Zelgius out of the fight. When the battle began, Zelgius found Ranulf and the two fought, and although he held out for a long while, Ranulf was eventually overwhelmed and saved only by the intervention of Tibarn. Zelgius then received word that the supply camp was on fire, forcing him to retreat and tend to the matter. This battle was when Ranulf first began to realize that Zelgius and the Black Knight were the same man.[21]

For this retreat, Zelgius was berated by a senator for abandoning the fight and for failing to "exterminate the sub-humans", so Zelgius promised that he would bring an end to the war as soon as possible to assuage them. To achieve this, he challenged Skrimir to single combat at Soze Pass, an invitation which the hot-blooded and arrogant general readily accepted. Despite Skrimir's great strength, Zelgius won the duel and severely wounded Skrimir, then declared the war to be over. The defeat of Skrimir put a complete stop to Gallia's ability to continue the war, so Zelgius offered the Laguz Alliance three days to decide to pursue peace talks and ordered a ceasefire for the Begnion army. To the dismay and frustration of the Senate, Zelgius put an end to the war with minimal casualties, making a mockery of their plans and their desires for laguz extinction.[22]

Zelgius's ceasefire was soon overruled by the arrival of Sigrun with a message from the Senate, which demanded that he continue the war and destroy the Laguz Alliance and their allies. The Senate had had Sephiran arrested as a traitor and Sanaki had disappeared, so Zelgius and Sigrun were forced to comply with their will and keep fighting to prevent their masters from coming to harm.[23] The Laguz Alliance had begun a full retreat by this point, so Zelgius and the armies pursued them into the Serenes Forest.

When the Alliance entered the lava-filled Kauku Caves, Zelgius chose not to pursue them any further because of the extreme danger, but was overruled by the arrival of Senator Valtome of Culbert, who had recently been assigned as the commander-in-chief of the Begnion army and Zelgius's new superior officer. Despite Zelgius's objections, Valtome forced him to leave the northern force behind to pursue the Laguz Alliance into the caves, while Zelgius, Levail, and Valtome headed north to prepare for a direct invasion of Gallia through Crimea. Zelgius attempted to advise Valtome to be more diplomatic on the matter, but was ignored as Valtome ordered the armies to ransack Crimean towns for supplies and funds.

Valtome's attempts to diplomatically request war assistance from Crimea were denied by Elincia, and although Zelgius tried to advise him otherwise, Valtome ordered the army to enter Crimea anyway and ransack its towns for needed supplies.[24] After the Crimean Royal Knights stopped one of these raids, Zelgius attended a meeting between Valtome and Elincia and, after Valtome was done, requested that the Begnion army be allowed to cross through and fight in Crimea anyway, although neither Elincia nor Zelgius wanted this. When Elincia asked Zelgius about why Sanaki was letting the war happen, Zelgius could not reply and departed.

Days later, Zelgius and the Central Army passed into Crimea territory anyway, and were not stopped by the Crimean army. Both the Laguz Alliance armies and the Begnion army gathered in the fields of Crimea, preparing for a major battle, but they were stopped by the arrival of Elincia, who laid down her sword as a symbolic gesture to stop the fight. Zelgius ordered the Begnion army to retreat from the battle out of respect for Elincia's actions, despite Valtome demanding that they attack, and the Laguz Alliance did the same. As they left, Levail informed Zelgius that Valtome and his personal army had moved in to kill Elincia anyway, but despite Levail's worries about what would happen if they ignored and defied Valtome, Zelgius refused to fight and ordered that no more Begnion soldiers were to join the battle. Zelgius accepted all of the blame for this decision to protect his men from Valtome's revenge.

Civil war in Begnion

Zelgius frees Sephiran from imprisonment.

For his failure to assist Valtome in the last battle, Valtome immediately arranged to have Zelgius executed for treason on his return to the Central Army camp. Although Levail objected to the execution of one of Begnion's greatest heroes, Zelgius accepted the consequences of his actions. Knowing of the great esteem Zelgius had among the people of Begnion, Valtome planned to release a cover story for Zelgius's death which claimed that he had died in battle against the Laguz Alliance.[25] The execution was foiled by the arrival of Empress Sanaki and her Holy Guard, who had escaped the Senate's clutches and revealed their plots against her to the Begnion army. Valtome denied these claims against him and tried to accuse Sephiran of treasonous plots against the Senate, but Zelgius stopped him with a threat to break his neck.

The confrontation between Sanaki and Valtome provoked a civil war in Begnion which divided its army in two camps: one loyal to Sanaki, and the other loyal to the Senate. Zelgius, Levail and the Sanaki faction of the army departed with Sanaki to join forces with the Laguz Alliance and Crimea, uniting the armies of the three into the Apostle's Army to take back Begnion from the Senate. Zelgius, however, did not remain with the army, instead returning to Begnion alone to find Sephiran. He left his army behind, and Ike was appointed the commander of the four combined armies of Begnion, Crimea, Gallia, and Phoenicis in Zelgius's place.[26]

Soon after Micaiah and the Daein army had dealt a crippling blow to the Apostle's Army, Zelgius arrived at Sienne and freed Sephiran from imprisonment, and Sephiran declared that the time had come to make their move.[27] The two then provoked a revolt among the people of Begnion which convinced the general public to side with Sanaki in the conflict, causing endless rioting against the Senate.[28]

Judgement

Ike and the Black Knight begin their final duel.
I knew it. I knew that even if the end of the world came, you’d be the last one left standing.
— Sothe

Ultimately, the warring across Tellius achieved Sephiran's ultimate goal of awakening the goddesses, and Ashera began her judgement and turned almost all beorc and laguz to stone. Like all Branded, Zelgius was unaffected by this and continued to serve with Sephiran. Meanwhile, Yune recruited the members of the Apostle's Army and the Daein army to join her in fighting back and undoing the judgement.

As she traveled to Begnion through the Grann Desert, Micaiah and her Silver Army, one of the three armies following Yune, were attacked by Lekain, Numida, and the Disciples of Order. The Black Knight warped into the middle of the battle to protect Micaiah, and after the battle, he offered to take her to the Tower of Guidance to save her from the judgement. Micaiah refused to abandon her allies, and the Black Knight left, saying that he would come to offer this again before the next judgement wave came and petrified her allies.[29]

The three armies of Yune soon arrived at the Tower of Guidance, and Zelgius awaited them inside as the Black Knight. For the first time, the Black Knight removed his helmet in the presence of others and confirmed Ranulf and Ike's suspicions that he was, in fact, Zelgius. While Levail and the Disciples of Order occupied Ike's allies behind a barrier, Zelgius and Ike challenged each other to a final duel to the death, uninterrupted by the others: both had long been anticipating the chance to test each other again, to put an end to their rivalry once and for all, and to finally surpass the other as warriors. Zelgius soon lost the duel and was mortally wounded by Ike. Ike revealed to him that he had been excited to hear that the Black Knight had survived and that they may fight again, and that he regarded Zelgius as his final teacher in the ways of the sword. Zelgius thanked Ike—now, in his opinion, a true match for Greil at the height of his former power—for giving him a chance to prove himself against Greil for the last time, and as he died, Zelgius felt that his rivalry with Ike had given meaning to his life spent in the darkness.[30]

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance

Role

The Black Knight makes recurring appearances as an enemy throughout the game. He appears in Chapter 11 on the next enemy phase after the player attacks Mackoya, and again in Chapter 24 at the end of turn 7 (Easy and Normal) or 5 (Difficult). In both of these appearances the player has no ways of damaging him and he can easily kill most units, so the goal is to finish the chapter as quickly as possible and to stay out of his range. His final appearance is as the boss of the second half of Chapter 27, where Ike duels him with only Mist for help. The goal of the map is to defeat the Black Knight, but if Ike does not have the stats or skills to do it in time, he can simply retreat or survive for six turns to end the fight and continue with the game.

In all appearances, the Black Knight possesses blessed armor which nullifies all damage not inflicted by Ike's Ragnell, Giffca's Claw, Tibarn and Naesala's Beaks, and Nasir and Ena's Breaths. The latter five units are not available at any point where the Black Knight appears, so Ike is the only unit able to fight him after receiving Ragnell in Chapter 27.

There also exists a set of unused stats for Zelgius as himself. This stat set has the same affinity, growths, and weapon levels as his Black Knight stat set.

Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn

Role

The Black Knight is playable for brief periods of time in Micaiah-focused chapters. He first becomes playable in Part I, Chapter 9, as one of only two playable units in that map along with Micaiah herself, and continues to be playable in the Part I, Endgame. He leaves the party at the end of Part 1, but rejoins several turns into Part III, Chapter 6. He is not playable again after that point, but reappears as a NPC in Part IV, Chapter 3. During his time as a playable unit, the Black Knight's death is an automatic Game Over, although that is extremely unlikely to ever happen given how strong he is compared to the enemies of those chapters.

The Black Knight makes two appearances as an enemy unit. Along with the rest of Micaiah's army, he is present as an enemy in Part III, Chapter 7. While defeating him is not part of the chapter's objective, the task of having Ike engage him in battle once with both surviving is required for the chain of events which eventually lead to recruiting Lehran. His final appearance is in the second stage of the Part IV, Endgame, as the boss of that chapter. He and Ike are sequestered in the upper half of the map, and the Black Knight's defeat is the chapter's objective.

When he appears as an enemy, the Black Knight retains his stats and inventory from his last playable appearance. While he is already at his maximum level, it is possible to use stat booster items on him to increase his stats and make him slightly more difficult to fight as an enemy. However, Alondite is locked to him while playable and cannot be removed from his inventory, and none of his skills can be unequipped.

Zelgius makes no playable or enemy appearances as himself (excluding the Endgame Black Knight fight, where he appears unmasked in cutscenes), but he appears in scripted cutscene fights in Part 3, where he defeats both Ranulf and Skrimir. He has a complete set of stats and a unique variant of the Marshall class with stats matching his Black Knight class.

Role

Zelgius, in his Black Knight identity and based on his Path of Radiance incarnation, is one of the characters added to the game in the Diabolical Bloodline update, and was made available to players in the fourth edition of the Tempest Trials, "Moment of Fate", which initially ran from September 23, 2017 through October 7, 2017. Zelgius in his true identity, this time based on his Radiant Dawn incarnation, is one of the characters added to the game in the Guided by a Dream update, and became available for summoning by players on January 12, 2018. A winter-themed variation of the Black Knight was added with the Holiday Handoff update, and was made available to summon starting on December 16, 2022. A ninja-themed variation of Zelgius was first made available to summon from November 7 to December 7, 2023.

The Black Knight is notably the first character to introduce a new skill into the special category that was not present in the game at its launch.

Personality

As a knight and general, Zelgius was considered by Levail to be the last true knight and an epitome of chivalry, so he was strictly honorable to the point that even his enemies readily believed him to be a man of his word. If there was a way of solving a situation without killing, he would always take that way and keep his acts as non-lethal as possible.[31] Even as the Black Knight, at least after the Mad King's War, he refused to kill those who would not fight back.[32] When acting as the Black Knight during the Mad King's War, however, Zelgius adopted a more ruthless and cold-hearted persona. On the night that he killed Greil, he threatened to torture and kill Greil's children to get him to reveal the location of the medallion, and at the duel at Nados Castle, he threatened to kill Mist as well to destroy Greil's entire family.[33]

Described by Greil as willful and arrogant,[34] Zelgius was highly confident in his own combat abilities and pursued worthy opponents among both his beorc and laguz foes. He was particularly intrigued by the idea of challenging Gallia's King Caineghis, and viewed his fights with Ranulf as a way of sampling just how strong Caineghis really was.[11] This hunger for a good battle, and the idea of challenging Greil—and later, Ike—again someday, is what drove him through most of his life. In his view, fighting an unworthy foe was a waste of time.

Zelgius's loyalty to Sephiran was unquestionable and it was believed that he could never serve conflicting masters;[35] indeed, even Ashnard suspected that the Black Knight's loyalties toward himself and Daein were not absolute and that he had considered betrayal.[36] He had absolutely no tolerance for insults aimed at Sephiran and would quickly resort to violence against anybody who tried to dishonor him, even other senators.[37] The threat of harm coming to Sephiran was enough to press him into following the cruel and ill-advised orders of the other Begnion senators, if it meant preventing them from harming Sephiran. Despite his loyalty to Sephiran, Zelgius was known to overstep the boundaries of the tasks Sephiran set him to pursue his own agenda. For instance, while Sephiran had only tasked Zelgius with retrieving Lehran's Medallion from Greil and did not order the latter's death, Zelgius's desire to test himself caused him to go a step further and kill Greil.[38]

Owing to his Branded nature and the abuse he took as a result of it while growing up, Zelgius lived a relatively lonely life. He was unable to grow close to or trust anybody, aside from Sephiran, out of a fear that his Branded nature would be found out and he would lose everything again.

Battle quotes

...Move. One such as you cannot stop me.
— The Black Knight, in Chapter 11 of Path of Radiance.
...A sub-human warrior... I would test your strength.
— The Black Knight, when facing a beast laguz in Chapter 11 of Path of Radiance.
Black Knight: We meet again, son of Greil.
Ike: ...
Black Knight: Why do you challenge me? You are not worthy of being my foe. Flee while you are able.
Ike: You! Die! Die now! Aaaaaaaarrrr!
Black Knight: ...Fool.

— The Black Knight, when fighting Ike in Chapter 11 of Path of Radiance.
Fool! Run now, and I'll let you live.
— The Black Knight, in Chapter 24 of Path of Radiance.
Ike: I've found you at last.
Black Knight: Hmph. You see me, and instead of fleeing, you come to face me. Interesting...and foolish.
Ike: I will keep challenging you until I have avenged my father!
Black Knight: There will be no next time. I will snuff the life from your breast here today.
Ike: I will not lose! Ready yourself!!

— The Black Knight, when fighting Ike in Chapter 24 of Path of Radiance.
Black Knight: What an odd fate. This will be the third time I have defeated you. The first was in the forest of Gallia. The second at Delbray in Crimea.
Ike: We've met twice, and I've lost twice. But the third time will be different.
Black Knight: Oh?
Ike: My sword-fighting skills were given to me by my father. If I stay true to them, I cannot lose.
Black Knight: Did you never think that using your father's techniques on the man who killed him would be futile?
Ike: My father robbed himself of using his stronger arm. If he had, he would not have lost to the likes of you.
Black Knight: Hah... You think so? Let us test your stronger arm then. Come, son of Gawain... Show me your strength.

— The Black Knight, when fighting Ike in Chapter 27 part 2 of Path of Radiance.
Mist: ...Sniff...sniff...
Black Knight: Do you tremble in fear, little daughter of Gawain? How... entertaining. But if you value your life, you will leave this place at once.
Mist: You... you took my brother and my father! My sword may not even scratch you, but I don't care. This one blow... will contain... all my anger... and all my pain... Rrrraaaaa! I'll kill you!

— The Black Knight, when fighting Mist in Chapter 27 of Path of Radiance.
Jarod: I see you’re pretty impressed with yourself!
Black Knight: Did you think the likes of you could be a worthy opponent for me? Know your place.

— The Black Knight, when fighting Jarod in Part I, Chapter 9.
Jarod: Well well well. Look what we have here. The loathsome phantom of old Daein... Why in blazes are you here? What inspired you to slooooowly clank your way up out of your grave?
Black Knight: My purpose is not for you to know.
Jarod: Oh. I feel so rejected. Must I crack that helm open and ask your ugly, naked face directly!? I have to take vengeance for Alder’s death, after all!
Black Knight: This is how you meet your death? Sad. Come at me then, and join your friend.

— The Black Knight, when fighting Jarod in Part I, Endgame.
Stand aside. You are no match for me.
— The Black Knight, in Part III, Chapter 7 of Radiant Dawn.
Ike: So, you are alive. Somehow, I knew it wasn’t over yet.
Black Knight: Of course it wasn’t over. You were a boy trying to live up to the memory of the greatest swordsman in history.
Ike: And yet, I was the one who walked out of the castle that day.
Black Knight: You have your father to thank for that. When you told me that he had crippled himself, I realized that I had never fought him at all, merely his shadow.
Ike: What are you getting at?
Black Knight: I saw immediately that you were not your father’s equal, but that one day you might be. So I did the only thing I could to keep you alive... I let you win.
Ike: ...You did, didn’t you? I’ve relived that fight so many times... How could I not have seen it before?
Black Knight: You were not yet capable of seeing it. But I had to let you live, so that you could continue to train and perhaps one day be worthy of Gawain’s legacy. My armor’s blessing is gone, let us see if that day is today.
Ike: I promise you that it will be. Begin.

— The Black Knight, when fighting Ike in Part III, Chapter 7 of Radiant Dawn.
Ranulf: Oh, I thought I smelled you earlier. We just have to stop meeting like this.
Black Knight: ...
Ranulf: Back in Gallia, in Crimea... We just ran into each other recently, too. I don’t know about the others, but I can tell who you are. You have one heck of a stench.
Black Knight: ...Enough talk. Prepare yourself.
Ranulf: Still won’t own up, huh? Fine. If that’s the case, I’ll just tear your mask off and show everyone myself!

— The Black Knight, when fighting Ranulf in Part III, Chapter 7 of Radiant Dawn.
Black Knight: Your time is done.
Numida: Damn you, ghost! If you had just stayed dead, I could have done whatever I wanted to Daein!

— The Black Knight, when fighting Numida in Part IV, Chapter 3 of Radiant Dawn.
Let’s see how you handle this!
— Zelgius, when fighting Ike in Part IV, Endgame (2) of Radiant Dawn.
I'm one of Daein's Four Riders.
— The Black Knight's SpotPass parley quote in Awakening.
Have at me and learn your folly.
— The Black Knight, in a SpotPass battle in Awakening.
I shall be your shield.
— The Black Knight's SpotPass recruitment quote in Awakening.
A challenge, is it? Hmm. First, a test to see if you've earned that privilege!
— The Black Knight, in Smash Brethren 1 in Awakening.
Noire: Scary guy? Check. Black armor? Check. Concealed face? Check. Um...this is not good.
Black Knight: Flee home to your own realm, little one.
Noire: Um...this is not good. ACK! B-but, I can't do that...

— The Black Knight, when facing Noire in Smash Brethren 1 in Awakening.
Have you come all this way to dance at the end of my lance?
— The Black Knight, in Smash Brethren 3 in Awakening.
Noire: HA HA HA! HOW LARGE AND IMPOSING YOU ARE. ...NO MATTER! I SHALL ENJOY PLUCKING THAT VISOR FROM YOUR SHADOWY FACE!
Black Knight: Bold words. You had better hope that's not empty courage.

— The Black Knight, when facing Noire in Smash Brethren 3 in Awakening.
Turn around and leave, or stay here and face your end!
— The Black Knight, in Rogues & Redeemers 1 in Awakening.
Kellam: My gods! Just looking at you overwhelms me! ...Do you think you could give me some tips? I lack presence.
Black Knight: No advice, but you can mull it over more later...if you manage to survive.

— The Black Knight, when facing Kellam in Rogues & Redeemers 1 in Awakening.
You were brave to challenge me—but in the end, foolish!
— The Black Knight, in Rogues & Redeemers 3 in Awakening.
Kellam: Before we get started, I was hoping you might give me a few pointers. How do you achieve that whole larger-than-life feel?
Black Knight: What do you care? The less people notice you, the better your chances.
Kellam: Hey... You're right!
Black Knight: A shame you realized it too late.

— The Black Knight, when facing Kellam in Rogues & Redeemers 3 in Awakening.

Death quotes

You've grown stronger... I...commend you...
— The Black Knight, in Path of Radiance.
Black Knight: ...Perfection. Your skill...is far superior to mine...
Micaiah: You... You must be kidding! For the Black Knight to fall like this... How could a nobody like that defeat...such a warrior...?

— The Black Knight, as a playable character in Radiant Dawn.
Black Knight: Impossible... I’ve been defeated?
Micaiah: Sir Knight!
Black Knight: Do not be alarmed, my maiden. I won’t die so easily...
Micaiah: I’ll heal you right now.
Black Knight: That won’t be necessary, though I am afraid I must retreat. I apologize, my maiden. I will pay back the debt another time.

— The Black Knight, in Part III, Chapter 7 of Radiant Dawn.
Black Knight: Impressive. You have indeed begun to walk in Gawain’s footsteps.
Ike: Do you admit defeat, then?
Black Knight: No, but I have finished taking your measure. You have made great progress, but still fall short.
Ike: The next time we meet, it will be for the last time. I will avenge my father!
Black Knight: Continue to train, Ike, son of Gawain. We will meet again.

— The Black Knight, when defeated by Ike in Part III, Chapter 7 of Radiant Dawn.
Impressive! Most impressive!
— Zelgius, when defeated by Ike in Part IV, Endgame (2) of Radiant Dawn.
Never did I think to meet my match...in this world...
— The Black Knight, in Smash Brethren 1 in Awakening.
So...there are still warriors out there...strong enough to defeat me...
— The Black Knight, in Smash Brethren 3 in Awakening.
Nngh... I took this...too lightly...
— The Black Knight, in Rogues & Redeemers 1 in Awakening.
I've done...all I can... The rest is in your hands...
— The Black Knight, as an NPC in Rogues & Redeemers 2 in Awakening.
Ha... Perhaps...there is hope for you yet...

The Black Knight appears as a costume for Mii Swordfighters, released in the third wave of paid downloadable Mii Fighter costumes. Purchasing his DLC adds two costume pieces: the Black Knight's Helm, which can be worn by any Mii Fighter, and the Black Knight's Armor, which can be worn only by Mii Swordfighters. The costume does not affect the Mii Fighter's stats in any way.

The Black Knight is once again available as a collectible trophy, exclusively in the Wii U version. This trophy also appears as a red trophy item in the Smash Tour board game mode, which gives its user's smash attacks a rare chance of being a one-hit KO. Against the Dark Knight also returns as a musical track for Castle Siege.

PAL: It's said that the Black Knight's identity is a mystery even to the Daein army who he fights for. In Path of Radiance, he's Ike's mortal enemy, and this enmity continues into Radiant Dawn. His already fearsome strength is bolstered further by the skill Eclipse. He's so powerful that you might even expect him to be the final boss.

The Black Knight is one of Daein’s Four Riders, a group of elite generals. He’s said to be the strongest, and carries the holy sword Alondite. And what’s a black knight without black armor? I’m told his armor has been blessed with divine protection that deflects all attacks… I wouldn’t want to be stuck fighting against him! That might be why he never takes his armor off. Only a select few know what he looks like, or even know much about his past. That said, it seems like he knows Greil of the Greil Mercenaries… The Black Knight truly is an enigma, but when it comes to fighting, his talents are clear as day. I hope there’s some way we can get him to stick around with us!

Zelgius, Earl of Kadohl, is regarded as Begnion’s greatest general. In fact, some call him the greatest in all of Tellius! Zelgius led an army to support Crimea during the war with Daein, and three years later, he assumed command over Begnion’s forces fighting against the Laguz Alliance. In addition to his reputation for leadership as a general, Zelgius is also renowned for his swordsmanship, and some consider him the continent’s foremost swordsman. He’s locked horns with laguz royalty, feared for their strength, and come away the victor! You might wonder what drives him. Well, it seems that his true desire is to surpass his former mentor… I’m not sure who this mentor was, but looking at Zelgius’s track record so far, I don’t think his dream is out of reach. Keep it up, Zelgius! You’ll show them one day!

Trivia

  • In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the North American description of the Black Knight claims he wields Ettard rather than Alondite; this was fixed in the PAL release. This was due to Alondite's Japanese name being Ettard.
  • In Radiant Dawn, there is a programming error in the English version of the game that causes a line in Yune's closing monologue about Zelgius in the second part of Part 4 Endgame to go unused.
  • According to Tellius Recollection, Zelgius was designed with an apparent age of 26 in Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn.[39][40]

Zelgius: Yes. There was someone on my father’s side who...who was with a laguz. My lord...the brand...do you know of a way to remove it? This cursed thing, I...I am an outcast from my family. I joined the military to escape the shame and hatred in their eyes... I live in fear of discovery. When I think that I might see that same shame and hatred in another’s eyes, I... I come close to despair... I have lived my life alone, unable to trust or become close to anyone.
Sephiran: Such loneliness and isolation. You poor child... It pains me to tell you that I know of no way to remove your brand.
Zelgius: I...I understand... It was a foolish question. I apologize. Lord Sage, I– I realized some years ago that I was aging more slowly than others do.
Sephiran: And you wish to conceal that fact, don’t you? Is that why you rarely remove your armor, even when indoors?
Zelgius: Yes...but this ruse will not last indefinitely. In a few years, I will be forced to leave this army’s service.
Sephiran: And once again, you will be alone.
Zelgius: I am accustomed to being alone. My only hesitation, is that...I will miss studying the sword under my commander, General Gawain.
Sephiran: When the time comes for you to leave, will you come to me, perhaps?
    Zelgius: My lord?
Sephiran: We share a...similar condition. I see something familiar within you. I can... understand your pain and isolation.
    Zelgius: But why me?
Sephiran: I have a task that I must accomplish. With you at my side, I would feel more confident of my success.
Zelgius: If I join you, will I be redeemed?
Sephiran: I cannot say. At the very least, however, you will no longer be alone. And neither will I.
Zelgius: That is enough, then. You have made my decision simple. When I leave here I will find you. I am a soldier in the Daein army. I serve under the command of General Gawain. My name is Zelgius. May I ask your name, my lord sage?
    Sephiran: My name? Of course...
" — Sephiran and Zelgius, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  4. "True, your revenge against me remains incomplete. However, may I ask you to step aside for now? Though at different times, Ike and I both learned the way of the sword from the same master: one of Daein’s famous Four Riders, General Gawain. He left Daein under an assumed name and formed a mercenary company. I was entranced by Greil’s swordsmanship while he was in Daein. I studied under him, I fought next to him... I idolized him. When he left, I was crushed. I vowed to find him again, and challenge him to a duel. I had to know if I had surpassed him! Three years ago, I caught up to Greil. I challenged him to a duel, and was victorious. But, something was wrong... The fight had been too simple. I thought I’d never feel satisfaction again. Then, Ike told me why it had been so easy. Greil had severed all the tendons in his right hand, and swore never again to draw a blade. Can you imagine my joy at the news? I knew that a swordsman of his stature couldn’t have been so easy to defeat!" — Zelgius, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  5. "And the man in command is one of Begnion's most beloved heroes, General Zelgius! There's no mistaking him, sir!" — A Begnion soldier, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
  6. "Levail: Captain Haar! You are still alive!
Haar: What happened that you didn't expect me to survive?
Levail: Um... Nothing, I suppose. It's just that it's been a while since you left Begnion.
Haar: Yeah. Twenty years ago, wasn't it?
Levail: I was still very young at the time. You had just been dubbed a knight. Oh, it brings back such memories... The bravery of the dracoknights, especially the Fizzart Platoon. It was legendary among the soldiers. But then you suddenly defected to Daein.
Haar: I got sick of taking orders from corrupt senators, so I ditched the country with General Shiharam.
Levail: I joined the army after I came of age. But it was different after you all left. It was as if you took its spirit with you. The only exception was General Zelgius, the general of Duke Persis's army.
Haar: I see. Is that why you're under his command?
Levail: Yes. He is the last true knight. I will die for him.
    Haar: Yes, Levail. You will.
Levail: How I dreamed of fighting a proper foe! I am honored, Sir Haar! Have at you!
" — Levail and Haar, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  7. "Sephiran: At the time, it was relatively easy to get an outsider close to the king. Ashnard was famous for employing powerful men with no regard for their background or social status.
Ike: Obviously, he would have needed no convincing once he saw the bladework of General Zelgius.
" — Sephiran and Ike, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  8. "Ashnard: You are an enigma, dark one. Everything you possess is fey and of unknown origin.
Black Knight: The armor I presented to you...Do you find it dissatisfactory?
Ashnard: No, it has my approval. My wyvern Rajaion, and this armor which renders any enemy attack impotent... Both are well suited to me. They both shine because they are mine! And now the medallion, and that galdr as well, both belong in my hands!
" — Ashnard and the Black Knight, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
  9. "Though at different times, Ike and I both learned the way of the sword from the same master: one of Daein’s famous Four Riders, General Gawain. I will defeat him and finally surpass my master!" — Zelgius, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  10. "Mackoya: Now then, where is our special guest?
Black Knight: I'm right here, General Mackoya.
Mackoya: Oh! Sir Black Knight! I hope I didn't keep you waiting.
Black Knight: No, I just arrived. Let us proceed...I would hear your report.
Mackoya: There are no problems whatsoever. I've nothing to report, save the tedium of it all. The farther west we travel, the weaker the Crimean fighting spirit becomes. Each town displays less and less resistance--now they literally throw wide the gates at first sign of our approach! With duty as humdrum as this, I worry that my troops may become sloppy and lose their edge.
Black Knight: As a fellow warrior, I can sympathize with your plight.
Mackoya: I thank you for your understanding.
Black Knight: This town was not scheduled for subjugation until much later...Tell me, why are you here now?
Mackoya: Yes, as to that...Mere days ago, a castle that held Crimean prisoners of war was attacked and the captives freed. The perpetrators were Crimean soldiers accompanied by sub-humans. According to our intelligence reports, their trail led here...
    Black Knight: I see.
Mackoya: The princess of Crimea is said to have fled to Gallia. If we can capture this band, we may gain information on her location.
Black Knight: Do you require my assistance?
Mackoya: I thank you for the generous offer. However, if you were to enter the fray, it would be over in a twinkling. My men are starved for combat. I would beg your restraint so that they may be allowed some...entertainment.
Black Knight: As you will. The field is yours. Turn your soldiers loose, and may their blades run red with glory.
Mackoya: Your graciousness is greatly appreciated.
" — Mackoya and the Black Knight, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
  11. 11.0 11.1 "Black Knight: ...The mercenaries boarded the ship safely. Now, how to proceed...
Ranulf: You're not impeding that ship. I won't allow it.
Black Knight: One of Gallia's beast warriors...I've met you once before. Yes...at the castle near the sea of trees.
Ranulf: From where I'm standing, we've actually met twice.
    Black Knight: Oh?
Ranulf: I saw you that night...Standing in the light of the full moon. The night you murdered Sir Greil.
Black Knight: Ha ha! So you were the one traveling with the beast king, eh? Interesting. By measuring his aide's strength, I will naturally learn more of the king's true power.
Ranulf: Hate to tell you this, but my king is not to be measured against the likes of me. He is far beyond that.
Black Knight: All the better. Now then, let us begin.
" — The Black Knight and Ranulf, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
  12. "Ashnard: Our only concern is the princess of Crimea and the medallion. We must wait and watch until such time as we can strike.
    Black Knight: ...
Ashnard: In the interim, I want you to take charge of the invasion of Gallia. Be smart. You must not allow Gallia to bring their full might to bear. Understood?
    Black Knight: ...As you will.
" — Ashnard and the Black Knight, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  13. "Ashnard: So they've left Begnion, have they?
Black Knight: According to our spy, they march with a regiment of Begnion's army. They plan to take a land route through Daein and then into Crimea.
Ashnard: Hah! They plan to cut across Daein? With nothing more than a single regiment at whose core is a tattered band of ragtag mercenaries? Gawain's son leads this rabble, yes? How does he stand up to his father's legacy?
Black Knight: He doesn't. He's just a boy, not yet worthy of his father's name.
    Ashnard: Hmph. Disappointing.
Black Knight: Though his skill with the blade is rough, there is something...uncanny about him. People seem drawn to him. And not just Begnion's apostle, either. He's also gained the trust of the Serenes survivors...and of King Phoenicis as well.
    Ashnard: The herons are alive?
Black Knight: It appears that two members of the royal family survived.
Ashnard: Heh heh... Look how nicely the table's been set for us. Bring one of them to me... I care not which one. And I want the medallion as well.
    Black Knight: ...As you wish.
" — Ashnard and the Black Knight, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
  14. "Zelgius: I beg your pardon. Are you General Ike?
Ike: I am. And you are?
Zelgius: I am Zelgius, earl of Kadohl. I've been dispatched from Begnion with a battalion to support your army.
Ike: Your assistance is much appreciated, but...This is very unexpected.
Zelgius: I understand your surprise. For Begnion's imperial senate, this decision was made with unusual haste.
Ike: I imagine so. It took forever just to get the soldiers I have now.
Zelgius: Well, there's a reason behind this expedited decision. Duke Persis has returned home.
    Ike: Do you mean Sephiran?
Zelgius: Correct. Duke Persis is also senior statesman of the imperial senate. The duke returned from his travels and began working immediately to settle pressing affairs of state. First, he met with the apostle, and they exchanged reports on both foreign and domestic matters. Then they discussed Begnion's position in relation to the current conflict, and possible courses of action. In less than half a day, they brought the entire imperial senate into line and sent us here to you.
Ike: ...So you're saying that Begnion has allied itself with Crimea. Is that it?
Zelgius: That's it exactly. I am at your service, General Ike.
    Ike: Oh... Um...wow. Thank you.
Zelgius: Now then, please tell me what you would have my men do. I'm ordered to help in any way possible.
Ike: Um... You've caught me off guard. I can't think of anything right now.
Zelgius: In that case, do I have permission to make camp around the palace and rest my troops?
Ike: Yes, please do. That's no problem.
Zelgius: Thank you. Please do not hesitate to call if you have need of us. We are at your disposal.
" — Zelgius and Ike, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
  15. "Ashnard: For you, it did take quite a long time...Didn't it?
Black Knight: Diverting the sharp eyes of the hawk king proved to be quite difficult. It required much planning and care.
" — Ashnard and the Black Knight, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
  16. "Ike: So, you are alive.
Begin." — Ike and the Black Knight, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  17. "We really do owe Begnion a lot, don’t we? In the end, we got not only you, but a whole battalion of reinforcements. General Zelgius and his troops are the reason we were able to minimize casualties during the final battle. He and his men took care of the retreating Daeins and allowed us to focus on the enemies before us." — Ike, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
  18. "Looking at it now, and it all may seem a bit impertinent, but... I came with reinforcements in case things took a turn for the worst. Your opponent was the Mad King Ashnard after all, and if worse had come to worst... well, you might have needed the help. Duke Perseus ordered us to join in the fight and rescue Princess Elincia at the very least." — Zelgius, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
  19. "Ike: The Black Knight... The man who killed my father... But I defeated him three years ago. I’m sure of it. At the very least, he couldn’t have escaped when Nados Castle came crashing down on him.
Elincia: The day after you fought, Bastian ordered some men to search the remains of Nados Castle. There was no trace of the Black Knight. No armor... No sword... No corpse. If the Black Knight that was seen in Daein was indeed the same Black Knight... He might prove to be a threat to Crimea.
" — Ike and Elincia, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  20. "Micaiah: That shout...that’s Jarod! For Daein’s sake, this time I swear I will put an end to him.
Black Knight: Maiden, take no risks upon yourself. You are the heart of this army, the soul that inspires us. We must not lose you. Leave this battle to me, and stay back.
Micaiah: Thank you for your concern, Sir Knight. But I am going to fight. You and everyone else are putting your lives on the line. I will not shirk my duty.
    Black Knight: You...are much...like her.
    Micaiah: What?
    Black Knight: ...Nothing.
" — Micaiah and the Black Knight, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  21. "Ranulf: Oh, I thought I smelled you earlier.
" — Ranulf and the Black Knight, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  22. "Senator: Gah! That insufferable fool! I cannot believe he killed one sub-human and ended the battle! Who gave him an order like that?! I don't care for such a petty victory!
    Lombroso:
I understand, my lord. I was hoping that this would be the end of the sub-humans, once and for all. However, can we really punish him for winning the battle?
Senator: No, you fool! That's what makes it even more bothersome! Zelgius and the apostle are both making mockeries of the senate! They're more of a threat to Begnion than those filthy sub-humans are!
" — A senator and Lombroso, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  23. "Zelgius: Is something the matter, General? You do not look well. Should I send for something? Water, perhaps?
Sigrun: General Zelgius, I... I carry an order from the senate. The cease-fire has been repealed. You are ordered to destroy the Laguz Alliance, and their allies as well.
Zelgius: What?! The enemy has already lost the will to fight! The apostle and Lord Sephiran would never agree to such a terrible plan!
    Sigrun: ...
    Zelgius: General Sigrun?
Sigrun: Lord Sephiran of Persis has been stripped of his titles as prime minister and head of the senate. He is currently under arrest and is charged with...committing high treason and fomenting rebellion.
Zelgius: No! Impossible! This is madness!
Sigrun: It doesn't end there. The apostle has gone into seclusion, with illness as the stated reason.
Zelgius: Damn it! They've been captured!
Sigrun: I've ordered my subordinates to find out where the apostle is, but I have yet to hear any word. General Zelgius, I beg of you, follow the senate's orders. Our friends' lives are at risk.
    Zelgius: ...Curse those senators.
" — Zelgius and Sigrun, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  24. "Senator Valtome arrives to take command of the Central Army. He orders Zelgius to march on to Gallia by way of Crimea. Observing diplomatic protocol, Valtome petitions the queen for passage as well as supplies and additional troops.
Queen Elincia, however, goes against the wishes of the Crimean nobles and resolutely denies each of Valtome’s requests. Her reply enrages Valtome, who sees Crimea as little more than a vassal of the empire. Ignoring Zelgius’s counsel, Valtome orders his army to enter Crimea and take whatever they need from the villages along the way.
" — Opening narration of Part III, Chapter 9, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  25. "Valtome: I shall now dispense punishment for disobeying my orders! General Zelgius! Do you have anything to say? I would hear your pleas now.
Zelgius: ...I am prepared to face the consequences of my actions.
Valtome: Quite an admirable sentiment, General. Although I imagine you should have thought about the consequences before you abandoned your allies! Now, on your knees. It's time for your execution. Good-bye, General Zelgius.
Levail: Wh-what?! Senator! I must ask you to reconsider! To execute a man of General Zelgius's caliber without a trial... It's madness! It's horrible!
Valtome: Levail, are you questioning a senator? A senator holds the right to punish a prisoner however he sees fit! Oh, I'll make sure to tell our people that the general was cut down in battle after felling hundreds of sub-humans. That way, the people will not trouble themselves over details that they couldn't possibly understand.
Levail: You would bury the truth?! Do you think the apostle is as easily fooled by your lies?!
Valtome: Oh, I sincerely doubt the apostle will ever get to hear them. ...All right, I've waited long enough. Your wait is over as well, Zelgius. Execute him! Don't worry, Zelgius. I'll make sure that your lands are looked after. They'll be mine, of course. Uwee hee hee!
" — Valtome, Zelgius, and Levail, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  26. "Ike: So, it sounds like everyone is on the same side now. That's the best news I've heard in a long time.
Sanaki: I feel the same, but it's too early to celebrate. I will not be happy until I take back my country. How we fare in the battles to come will be of the utmost importance.
Ike: The Greil Mercenaries would be glad to help. I know that we're a small unit, but we'll do our best to see the job done right.
Sanaki: I certainly hope you will. Especially since I've decided to make you the commander of our combined forces.
Ike: Wait, hold on there! What did you say?! Listen, Apostle Sanaki, I'm really flattered, but General Zelgius is much more qual--
Sanaki: Zelgius returned to the empire by himself to rescue Prime Minister Sephiran. Our army consists of the troops he left behind, as well as the armies of Crimea, Gallia, and Phoenicis. Ike, you're probably the only person on the face of Tellius who commands respect from all four countries represented here.
" — Ike and Sanaki, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  27. "Zelgius: My apologies for the long wait.
    Sephiran: Is the apostle safe?
Zelgius: She fled to Crimea, then exposed the senate's plots to the world. Currently, she leads the apostle's army through Daein and is preparing to storm the empire.
Sephiran: I see. Very well... It's time for us to make our move.
Zelgius: As you wish, my master.
" — Zelgius and Sephiran, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  28. "Tauroneo: A rebellion in the empire?! Is that true?
Sothe: Yes. The empire has been thrown into chaos since General Zelgius freed Prime Minister Sephiran. They've incited the peasants by asking, Who should you believe in? The senate, or the apostle?
Tauroneo: And the people have chosen the apostle, correct?
Sothe: Yes. They're rioting in the capital day and night, demanding answers. The senate is busy trying to quell the masses.
" — Tauroneo and Sothe, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  29. "Micaiah: Sir Knight! How good to see you! You always save me from danger.
Black Knight: Maiden. I have a favor to ask of you. Will you come with me? My master awaits you at the Tower of Guidance.
Micaiah: The Tower of Guidance? If I may ask...who is your master?
Black Knight: You will see when we get there. Please take my hand. We will be there in the blink of an eye.
Micaiah: ...I can’t. I can’t leave everyone behind. We have to get to the tower together.
Black Knight: Your allies will turn to stone when the light of judgment next shines. I do not wish for you to see it.
Micaiah: The light will strike again? When? Please tell me!
Black Knight: ...Maiden. I will come for you again. Make up your mind by then.
" — Micaiah and the Black Knight, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  30. "Ike: Ugh! Hahh!
Zelgius: You are stronger. Much stronger than before...
Ike: I have you to thank for that. I grew stronger through our previous fight.
Ike: To be honest... I was overjoyed when I heard that the Black Knight was still alive. That surprised me... I felt neither sadness nor hate. Just joy. My hands were shaking with anticipation. I couldn’t wait to fight my most formidable enemy again!
Ike: Your swordsmanship was fearsome. Fiercer and more powerful than any I’ve ever seen. After our duel three years ago, I trained hard, trying to remember all of your skills and techniques.
Zelgius: General Gawain was invincible at the time he trained me. To surpass him was my ultimate goal as a swordsman.
Ike: Was I as skillful as you remember my father in his prime years? Did you see his shadow in my sword?
Zelgius: I certainly did, Ike. Thanks to you, I was able to fight my master at the height of his glory days.
Ike: Black Knight Zelgius. You were my father's killer. And my last teacher.
Zelgius: ...I spent most of my life shrouded in darkness... But my life had meaning. Now I'm certain of it...
Zelgius: ...phiran, I will wait for you in the afterlife...
" — Ike and Zelgius, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  31. "It does not matter who the enemy is. If there is a way to avoid taking a life, that is the path I will choose. Leave now. I swear upon my name that my men will not attack as you retreat." — Zelgius, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  32. "Jarod: He was a good soldier... What now? Why don’t you kill me?
Black Knight: My sword is not made for killing those who will not raise their weapons.
" — Jarod and The Black Knight, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  33. "Gawain's daughter, eh? Good. Now I can pull out the entire family tree by the root." — The Black Knight, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
  34. "So willful. So arrogant... Of course... The one who... made him that way... was... m-me..." — Greil, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
  35. "A man like Zelgius could never serve conflicting interests... Never. Everything he did, he did for one master. Isn’t that so, Sephiran?" — Ike, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  36. "Ashnard: Does that bother you? Well then... Perhaps I should leave it to you and see what happens! Heee heee heee!
Black Knight: Do you believe I would betray you?
Ashnard: I believe your heart has considered it.
    Black Knight: Surely you jest...
" — Ashnard and the Black Knight, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
  37. "Valtome: N-no! This is a farce! You cannot trick us! You are using a fake apostle to disable the senate and take over Begnion! Men, we must act! That vile Sephiran is their leader! The fact that he's been put in chains is our proof! Hurk!
Zelgius: ...I will not allow you to disgrace my master's good name. One more syllable and I shall snap your neck, Valtome.
" — Valtome and Zelgius, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  38. "Ike: The Black Knight tried to take the medallion from my father, and killed him. Tell me, Sephiran, whose plan was that?! Ashnard’s...or yours?
Sanaki: Calm down, Ike! Sephiran? Would you please explain?
Sephiran: Sir Ike, I’m afraid your father’s death was an unfortunate result of Zelgius’s own personal agenda. I did not order Sir Gawain killed. However, I must admit that I did ask him to seize the medallion and hand it over to King Ashnard.
" — Ike, Sanaki, and Sephiran, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
