He came into violent dispute with his younger sister Mila, who dreamed of a paradise in which all living beings could frolic in freedom.
— Prologue of Gaiden

Zofia (Japanese: ソフィア Sofia) is a nation occupying the southern half of the continent Valentia. It was founded under the guidance of its patron deity, the Earth Mother Mila, and through Mila's pacifistic philosophy the people of Zofia came to adopt peaceful, hedonistic ways.

History

Zofia was founded in antiquity as a result of the schism between Mila and Duma, each of whom set out to found their own nation in half of Valentia to embody their ideals and philosophies. As a believer in peace above all else, Mila sought to build a paradise where all who lived there could live freely, which led the people of Zofia to forget about toil while emphasizing leisure.[1] Despite the mutual distrust between Zofia and its Duma-founded rival Rigel, they were bound by a pact between the gods to ensure peace between them;[2] at some point in their history, Rigel sent to Zofia the Royal Sword as a symbolic gift of national friendship.[3]

Eons later, by the year 603, Mila had mysteriously vanished through Duma's machinations, and her absence led to a famine across Zofia.[4] Three years later, the Zofian general Dozer instigated a coup against the royal family after a decade of having its members assassinated, and afterward requested assistance in his conquest from Rigel. A liberation force led by the knight Clive formed to oppose him, but when the tide turned against them, they sent an appeal to the retired warrior Mycen in the south-western corner of the nation. While Mycen declined, his adopted grandson Alm was given command of the army and turned the tide of the conflict, quickly driving Dozer and his supporters out of the capital. Meanwhile, the exiled princess Celica left on a journey to find Mila, eventually meeting Alm, her childhood friend, again.

Alm and Celica parted ways at the Zofian capital: Alm sought to lead an invasion of Rigel to put an end to the war, while Celica continued her quest for Mila through the Zofian deserts and later through Rigel's swamplands. By the time the war had come to an end, Alm had learned of his true identity as the Rigelian prince, and following his defeat of Duma, Alm and Celica married and reunified Rigel and Zofia into a single nation, the Kingdom of Valentia, with Alm as its first king.

Notable locations in Zofia

Zofia Castle

Zofia Castle is the nation's capital and the home of its royal family, found in the center of the kingdom's land. In Fire Emblem Awakening, Valm Castle is in the same location, meaning they are possibly the same.

Ram

Main article: Ram

The province of Ram, in the south-western corner of Valentia, is the home of Ram Village, where Alm and Mycen lived. The path between the village and the capital features Ram Forest and Ram Valley.

Novis

Main article: Novis Monastery

Novis Island, found off the south-east coast of Valentia, is the home of the Novis Monastery, where Celica was raised under the tutelage of the priest Nomah.

Sea Shrine

An isolated and abandoned Mila Shrine on an island off the Valentian coast is the lair of a Draco Zombie.

Zofia Port

The primary port of Zofia, on the eastern coast. Palla and Catria arrived here from Archanea in their search for Est.

Dozer's Fort

The traitor Dozer holds his headquarters in a fortress north of the capital, near the Rigelian border.

Temple of Mila

The greatest of all shrines to Mila is situated in Zofia's north-east, on the other side of a large desert. It holds a gateway leading to Rigel, but it is often inaccessible because the Gorge of Valentia runs through it.

Gorge of Valentia

The Gorge of Valentia is a great river which divides the two kingdoms. Its flow is controlled by a floodgate on the border's west, which Alm needed to access in order to lead an attack on Rigel. The gorge also runs through the Temple of Mila.

  1. "It was due to the gods that this land Valentia came to be divided into North and South. And in doing so they mistakenly involved themselves too deeply with the concerns of mankind. As a result, the people of Zofia forgot the meaning of toil, and the people of Rigel forgot the meaning of leisure. As things were, we would all certainly come to ruin." — Mycen, Fire Emblem Gaiden
  2. "But the "Pact of the Gods" upheld by Zofia and Rigel means we shouldn't come to blows, right? Our guardian, the Lady Mila, would never permit such a thing." — Alm, Fire Emblem Gaiden
