Thieves (盗賊 or とうぞく, Douzoku in Japan) are a class that has appeared in every single Fire Emblem game to date. In most games, they are sword-wielding units who have the ability to steal from non-allies. In Fire Emblem Gaiden, the Thief class is similar to the Brigand class of other games; thieves in that game wield axes and are enemy-only. In Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, they use knives instead of swords; in the latter game, they are only enemies.

Thieves generally have low strength and defense, and they are not very capable as fighters; because of this they should not be kept in the front lines. The most redeeming trait of thieves is their ability to steal small items from enemies, such as vulneraries.

In Ankoku Ryuu to Hikari no Tsurugi, Gaiden, Mystery of the Emblem, The Binding Blade, Shadow Dragon, and New Mystery of the Emblem, thieves cannot change class. In Genealogy of the Holy War and Thracia 776, thieves change to thief fighters; in Thracia 776 they can also promote to dancers. In Blazing Sword, The Sacred Stones, and Path of Radiance they change class to assassins; in The Sacred Stones they can also change class to rogues. In Radiant Dawn they presumably promote to rogues. Finally, in Awakening, they may promote to either assassins or tricksters.
