StreetPass
StreetPass (すれ違い通信, Passer-by Communication) is a multiplayer networking feature of the Nintendo 3DS console, and the inter-player equivalent of SpotPass. When a 3DS is place in sleep mode, StreetPass is active; it detects other 3DS consoles in sleep mode within a radius of approximately 30 metres[1], and certain software titles activated to use StreetPass will exchange some player data between the two consoles; for example, StreetPass Mii Plaza uses StreetPass to swap the Mii characters of 3DS uses between consoles, and players can use collected Miis to play minigames.
In Fire Emblem Awakening, StreetPass is employed in the game's multiplayer functionality. Players of Awakening can assemble squads of 10 of their units, dubbed "My Team" and led by their Avatar, which are transmitted to other players through StreetPass. When Awakening data is received from other players through StreetPass, the transmitted My Units appear on the world map as neutral units. Like the SpotPass characters, the My Units can be approached, and from them the player can buy rare items, directly hire the My Unit into their party for a sum of gold ("scout" them), or engage the My Unit's My Team in a battle with the reward of recruiting the My Unit free of charge[2]. The player can have 20 bonus units (StreetPass, SpotPass and DLC) in their party at a time; should they attempt to recruit a twenty-first, they will be prompted to dismiss one of their current bonus units[3]
StreetPass Mii Plaza puzzle
After the April 2012 Nintendo Direct presentation, a Awakening-themed puzzle for the 3DS's StreetPass Mii Plaza was released alongside a Mario Tennis Open puzzle. One initial piece was randomly transmitted through SpotPass to Japanese 3DS consoles, and the rest of the puzzle is collected through encountering other 3DS owners through StreetPass and taking new pieces from them, or by purchasing new pieces at random through the player's accrued 3DS Play Coins. The puzzle consists of 40 pieces.
Despite 3DS consoles of different languages normally possessing compatibility with Mii Plaza puzzles, the Awakening puzzle is currently locked to Japanese consoles; attempts to view the puzzle in an international 3DS console will inform the player that the puzzle is "not available yet" for non-Japanese players.[4] It has been speculated that when Awakening is formally announced for international release and given an English name, it will be made available to international consoles.
