The key attraction of Awakening's employment of SpotPass is its delivery of characters from past FES games. Once the SpotPass download has been confirmed, these past characters will appear on the world map, leading a team of ten generic enemies. When approached on the map, the player can buy items from these characters, pay a sum of gold to recruit the unit into their party, or can challenge the character's team to a skirmish where the reward for winning is for the character to join the player's party. SpotPass characters are counted as bonus units, along with the DLC characters and Avatars encountered through StreetPass, and a player can have 20 bonus units in their party at a time; should they attempt to recruit a twenty-first, they will be prompted to dismiss one of their current bonus units A SpotPass team can be re-summoned to the world map at any time through the Bonus Box. | The key attraction of Awakening's employment of SpotPass is its delivery of characters from past FES games. In total, there are 120 available SpotPass characters. For the most part this space is allocated as 10 characters per game, with three exceptions:
* Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light and Mystery of the Emblem are not themselves represented in favour of their remakes being represented instead
* Genealogy of the Holy War is represented by twenty characters for ten per generation
* The remaining 10 characters are a team of "others", comprised of antagonists from across the series.

SpotPass (Japanese: いつの間に通信 Anytime Communication) is a content-delivery feature of the Nintendo 3DS console. When the console is in sleep mode and SpotPass is enabled, the console will automatically connect to the internet (if a connection is available) and download new content for 3DS software and game titles which employ the functionality. The reception of new content via SpotPass is indicated with a shining blue light on the console's top right corner.
In Fire Emblem Awakening, SpotPass is employed to deliver unique characters, items, paralogue chapters and other facilities. Data obtained through SpotPass transmission is collected by checking the game's Bonus Box, from which the player can manually choose to load each set of content into a save file.
"Bonus Teams" delivered via SpotPass
The key attraction of Awakening's employment of SpotPass is its delivery of characters from past Fire Emblem series games. SpotPass characters are counted as bonus units, along with the DLC characters and Avatars encountered through StreetPass, and a player can have 20 bonus units in their party at a time; should they attempt to recruit a twenty-first, they will be prompted to dismiss one of their current bonus units[1] A SpotPass team can be re-summoned to the world map at any time through the Bonus Box.
In most downloadable content chapters, the SpotPass characters are also used as enemies and neutral units; before all the sets were distributed, this was used as a means of pre-determining which characters were going to be made available through SpotPass. In total, there are 120 available SpotPass characters. For the most part this space is allocated as 10 characters per game, with three exceptions:
- Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light and Mystery of the Emblem are not themselves represented in favour of their remakes being represented instead
- Genealogy of the Holy War is represented by twenty characters for ten per generation
- The remaining 10 characters are a team of "others", comprised of antagonists from across the series.

"Bonus Maps" delivered via SpotPass
New paralogue chapters are also activated via SpotPass, accessible only after completing Chapter 25 of the main story. Like the downloadable chapters, they contain new units to be recruited; unlike the downloadable content chapters, these are relevant (though not critical) to the main story of Awakening, and the new units are normal units in that they can support and marry.
