— Septimus

Septimus (Japanese: ノーズ Nose) is a Begnion general and a subordinate of the legendary General Zelgius who served in the army during its war with the Laguz Alliance.

Biography

Before the war began, Septimus was assigned command of Fort Flaguerre, a defensive line in relative proximity to Gallia. Flaguerre was the first target of the Laguz Alliance when they started the war, and was attacked by a Gallian force led by General Skrimir with the support of the Greil Mercenaries. When the Gallian soldiers drew close and Skrimir demanded that the Begnion general come out and fight, Septimus was overcome with fear of the laguz and fled the battle entirely, running away to the nearby town of Mugill to escape the laguz, whom Septimus insisted wished to "consume [him]".[1] The defense of Flaguerre was left in the hands of his subordinate, Silvano, who was promptly defeated as Flaguerre was claimed by Skrimir.

Later in the war, during the Alliance's attempts to retreat following Skrimir's defeat by Zelgius, they retreated into the dangerous, lava-filled Kauku Caves. When Senator Valtome insisted to Zelgius that he had to pursue the Alliance, rather than leave them to the deaths Zelgius assumed were inevitable, Septimus was tasked with leading a small, token force of men into the caves.[2] Septimus was instructed by his superiors that all he had to do was retrieve the charred corpses of the Alliance to prove they had inevitably died while navigating the caves, but to his dismay, they were all still alive.[3] Ike, Ranulf, and the Greil Mercenaries fought Septimus and his men to hold them off while Skrimir and others searched for an exit into Gallia, and Septimus was killed in this battle.

Personality

Septimus is cowardly and has an extreme fear and paranoia of laguz. His proximity to Gallia while serving at Flaguerre led him to have delusional fears about the fort being constantly stalked by laguz forces and about how he did not have enough soldiers to defend against "those bloodthirsty beasts",[4] and when the Laguz Alliance attacked and - in his mind - proved his worries to be true, he was so terrified of being "consumed" by the beasts that he fled the battle entirely. For this behavior he is disliked by some of his subordinates, such as Silvano.[1] He is frequently assigned terrible and dangerous missions which nobody else is willing to do, such as the death sentence that was following the Laguz Alliance into the Kauku Caves, likely because of his behavior and unpopularity.[5]

Quotes

Battle quotes

They told me that the enemy would be burnt by the time I reached them. The only thing I'd have to do was carry their dead bodies back as proof... It's just my luck that the enemy is alive and well! Why does this always happen to me?
— Septimus, as the boss of Part III, Chapter 8 of Radiant Dawn.
AHHH! Th-they're here! Th-th-the sub-humans! The mongrels are here! They want to consume me!
— Septimus, when fighting any laguz unit in Part III, Chapter 8 of Radiant Dawn.
Septimus: Wh-Who are you?!
Ike: Ike of the Greil Mercenaries. You don't look too good. Maybe you should just leave...
Septimus: Wait a moment... HAH! Look everyone! Look at this one! He's not a beast! Oh, thank the goddess! Victory is nigh!
Ike: So... Chasing us into these caves wasn’t the plum assignment that all the best generals wanted, huh?
Septimus: How DARE you! Take my spear, knave!

— Septimus, when fighting Ike in Part III, Chapter 8 of Radiant Dawn.

Death quotes
