Saul (サウル, Sauru) is a playable character in Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade. He first appears in Chapter 5.

Saul is a priest and member of the clergy of the Elimine Church. He tends to flirt with other women, and as a result, he is constantly nagged by his own bodyguard, Dorothy. Under Bishop Jodel's request, he and Dorothy join Roy's army.

Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade

Role

Saul is first seen in a small village of Lycia between Laus and Thria. Oblivious to the fight going on outside the village where he is, Saul prefers to busy himself with convincing a young woman to accompany him for dinner. However, to his displeasure, Dorothy arrives and the girl seizes the opportunity to flee. After a bit of banter, Dorothy informs him that the Lycian League Army is nearby them and that Princess Guinivere is with them. Delighted to hear the news, Saul orders Dorothy to hurry up and reach the army.

Once the bandits have been dealt with, Saul requests a meeting with Roy and Guinivere, surprising both of them. After complimenting the princess' beauty, he asks for the location of the Fire Emblem, and seeing Guinivere's reaction, he explains that the Elimine Church discovered almost immediately that it had disappeared at the same time she had left Bern. Therefore, the heads of the church sent him to discover the truth and, if necessary, to keep an eye in Bern's national treasure. To this end, he and Dorothy officially join Roy's army during the attack in Thria, and then they stay in the Lycian Army until the end of the war.

Once Bern is defeated and the war is over, Saul rejects all honors offered to him by the Elimine Church and dedicates his life to work as a missionary, becoming known by his peculiar behavior as well as his dedication to help people in need.

Personality and character

Saul's main characteristic is his shameless flirting with women, using the pretense of "talking about God." This usually backfires on him, as the women are either uncomfortable with him[1] or unaware of his true intentions.[2] Elen even interprets his actions as Saul's way to show how accepting the Elimine Church is. The only woman he has not attempted to woo is his bodyguard, Dorothy, who is very aware of his behavior. Yet he is a true priest at heart; he offers some advice to Igrene, explaining to her why the gods had not answered her prayers,[3] and decides to stay by Roy's side to protect him, after Jodel frees him of his job.[4]

Saul is a clever man, able of seeing through traps and people's actions.[5] This is also seen in his very unorthodox tactics, such as giving discounts for people who go to church, or clinging to a man to scare him off.[6]

  1. "Girl: Er... Father Saul, thank you for your offer, but maybe not today..
Saul: Come now, please don't be so cold. We can sit comfortably tonight and you can listen to my preaching...
" — Chapter 5, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
  2. "Elen: Uh...Father Saul?
Saul: I must be blessed to be able to meet such a beautiful lady. And you are a follower of the Elimine Church as well! This must surely be fate. Please, let us meet this evening and we shall discuss the love of God in great depth.
Elen: Yes, I would love to. Shall we set up a time now? Any time would work for me...
    Saul: ...... Are you serious?
Elen: You are going to talk about God's love, are you not? Why would I even think of refusing?
" — Saul and Elen's C support, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
  3. "Igrene: Those who pray to God expect something in return. But they will never receive anything, and that causes them to hate God. I think that it would be a lot less trouble to think that no such being exists in the first place.
Saul: ...... Yes, you are right.
Igrene: ...Is it all right for a priest like you to be saying that?
Saul: It is all right, I am an open-minded person. However, Saint Elimine did say this: 'God does not help us because He believes in us.'
    Igrene: Believes...in us?
    Saul: Yes.
" — Saul and Igrene's B support, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
  4. "Jodel: I believe I know Master Roy well enough to trust him. The Fire Emblem will be safe in his hands. What we were fearing surely will not happen now. Do you not agree?
Saul: Perhaps you are right. ...However, I wish to continue my mission a little longer.
    Jodel: I see...
Saul: Of course, I understand what you are saying, Bishop Jodel. Master Roy is certainly a noble person. Still... I think that this world is a bit too ugly yet for Master Roy to handle. I think that I know that more than the other priests...
" — Saul and Jodel's A support, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
  5. "Saul: And also... Oh! You must be Princess Guinivere! You are so beautiful, as the rumors tell!
    Guinivere: ...?
Saul: Ahem... Your Highness, I wish to know the location of the Fire Emblem. You have it with you, do you not?
Guinivere: !! How did you know that?
" — Chapter 5, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
  6. "Saul:' Do I not have any trust at all? Anyway, I drove off the man and rescued the maiden. I must admit, I acted exactly like a holy man ought to behave.
Dorothy: Really? You're not exactly very strong. How did you do it?
Saul: I went to the man and clung to him, crying, 'I thought we loved each other, and now you are rejecting me?" — Saul and Dorothy's C support, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
