— Roy to Zephiel right before their clash.

Roy (ロイ, Roi) is the main character of Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade. He is the son of Eliwood, the marquess of Pherae. On his journey, he becomes the leader of both the Lycian League's army and the Etrurian army. He is childhood friends with Lilina and a milk brother to Wolt. Roy's mother, while not known, could possibly be Lyn, Fiora or Ninian, as all of them have paired endings with Eliwood in Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade.

In Fire Emblem Awakening, Roy returns as an extra playable character, and he appears in several DLC chapters.

Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade

Role

Template:Spoiler At the start of the game, Roy is studying in Ostia under Mage General Cecilia of Etruria. Having been called by his father, Roy goes home to find the castle, with Eliwood and Lilina inside, being held by a group of bandits. With the help of some Pheraean knights, Roy takes the castle and rescues those inside.

Due to Eliwood's bad health, Roy is to lead Pherae's army against Bern, who has been attacking the Lycia Alliance. Following the ancient tradition, the young man departs to the border, where he is to meet up with a small band of mercenaries who will accompany him to Araphen, the meeting place of the Lycian Alliance. However, on the border he also meets a lady of Bern and her vassal, who were captive inside a castle. The lady is none other than Guinevere, princess of Bern and King Zephiel's sister. She had fled her home to try and meet a Lycian noble, so they can find a peaceful solution to this war. Roy agrees to help her and lets them join his army.

However, once they arrive in Araphen, they discover that Bern had already attacked the Alliance, decimating their forces. Roy fights his way inside the castle, only to find a dying Hector. The leader of the Alliance fought valiantly, but not even he could be a match for Bern's secret weapon, the dragons. With his last breaths, Hector names Roy as the next leader of the Alliance and dies.

Next, Roy is forced to fight against other Lycian lords, who had foreseen the collapse of the Alliance and so decided to side with the most powerful side - Bern. After battling in Laus and Thria, Roy and his army arrive in Ostia, only to find a full blown revolution. The leaders of the rebellion have even captured Lady Lilina, the heiress to Ostia's throne, planning to use her as a hostage. Roy, with the help of an Ilian mercenary squad, manages to recapture the castle and rescue Lilina, but not fully quell the rebellious forces, who have received the help of Bern's dragon knights. Yet at the last moment, the Etrurian army comes to the rescue, led by Cecilia.

The help does not come for free, though. Roy must now work for Etruria, and his first mission sends him away from Lycia and to the Western Isles, a colony of Etruria. Determined to resolve the conflict as quickly as possible, Roy instead discovers that some corrupt Etrurian nobles have enslaved the islanders. He even finds a creature of lore in the isles - one of the fabled dragons. Roy's honest nature gains him the help of the Resistance movement, a Etrurian nobleman and some mercenaries.

Having cleared the islands, Roy returns to the mainland after receiving the surprising news of a coup d'état in Aquleia, Etruria's capital. The only general who is resisting the rebellious forces, Cecilia, has been cornered and Guinevere is in danger. Roy does not make it in time and Cecilia is defeated, but Guinevere's loyal bodyguard, Milady, comes to the rescue and defects from Bern. Now labeled as betrayers of Etruria, Roy pushes forward and conquers Aquleia, managing to avoid bloodshed in the streets thanks to the Elimine Church's influence.

After gaining the full support of Etruria's king and generals, Roy renames his forces the "Etrurian Army" to avoid any more conflicts, and sets off to liberate Ilia and Sacae. Roy meets more enemies in both lands, the traitorous Djutes of Sacae and the mercenary forces of Ilia, but eventually he frees their main cities and learns more about Zephiel's past and the dragons.

The last part of the campaign takes Roy to Bern itself. After defeating Murdock, Zephiel's most loyal warrior, Roy visits the Temple of Seals and unearths another piece of the dragons' legend. Bern's last bastion now is its main castle, which is being defended by Zephiel himself. Roy makes a last attempt at understanding Zephiel, but it is useless, and the Etrurian Army kills the king of Bern.

If Roy's army posess all Divine Weaons and Fae is alive, Zephiel's sword points to the location of the Dragon Temple, and with that, Bern's remaining forces. This temple is where the last enemy, the Demon Dragon lies. Roy must keep fighting, now in their very same sanctuary. After a long and hard battle, Roy finally reaches the Demon Dragon. Yet, after having heard the truth behind the legend of The Scouring, Roy decides not to kill the dragon; instead, brandishing Hartmut's sword, he fights to restore the Dragon's heart.

Once all is said and done, Roy assists to Guinevere's coronation and returns to Pherae to rebuild the trampled lands. If he reaches an A support with Thany, Sue, Lalum, Cecilia, or Sophia, he marries the girl and the couple rules together over Pherae. If he reaches an A support with Lilina, they marry and later become the monarchs of the new Kingdom of Lycia.

Skill set

Personality and character

Roy is a quite competent leader and warrior. Despite his young age, he manages to lead an ever growing army and gain people's trust wherever he goes. Idealistic and loyal, he is commited to protect those in need and fight for the right causes, even if this means fighting against old bonds. He is also understanding of people's desires and reasons, and feels that a victory obtained by sacrificing people is not a true victory.[1] Although his knights try to keep him away from the front lines, Roy refuses to, stating that the only way he can understand people and fight for them is to experience their hardships.[2]

Through Lilina and Wolt's conversations about Roy, though, the player can see a different side of him. According to Lilina, Roy is somewhat clumsy.[3] He tends to doubt his competence, heavily relying in Marcus and Merlinus' experience and support, and from what it is seen in Thany's supports, he has trouble keeping himself in good spirits.[4]

Roy values friendship and family greatly. In his supports with Wolt, Roy shows he does not care about their social status, for he sees the archer as a brother and not as a vassal.[5] He maintains a close relationship with Cecilia, his former teacher, and Lilina, his childhood friend, but is also friendly towards new people, such as Sue and Sophia. He is also not very good at handling women, and he is especially flustered by Lalum's forwardness.[6]

Awakening

Roy cannot support with any character in this game.

Endings

Roy, Young Lion
Short: Returned home and worked to rebuild Pherae.

Long: Roy returned home to rebuild the lands in Lycia that were trampled on during the war. Although both Etruria and Bern offered him high-ranking positions in their courts, he never accepted any of them. Still, people always seemed to like him, and he left behind many legends during the course of his life.

Roy and Thany
Thany gave up the path of the Pegasus Knight and went to Pherae with Roy, where they married. Rebuilding the battered land was a painful process, but her cheerful personality encouraged many people to rise up and help lead Lycia to prosperity again.

Roy and Sue
Sue accompanied Roy to Lycia, where she married him and became the mistress of Pherae. However, she never could cast away her love for nature, and her behavior sometimes troubled those around her, who were not familiar with Sacaean culture.

Roy and Lilina
After returning home, Lilina became the marquess of Ostia, and married Roy a short while later. Together, Roy and Lilina united the Lycia Alliance and created the Kingdom of Lycia, a peaceful nation blessed with prosperity and harmony.

Roy and Lalum
Lalum accompanied Roy to Pherae, where they married. Many voiced their discontent at bringing in a woman of unknown origins into the family, but Lalum's perseverence and unbending will earned her respect. She then proceeded to live happily with Roy.

Roy and Cecilia
Cecilia accompanied Roy to Pherae, where she helped rebuild the battered land. She eventually married Roy, continuing to offer him close support and aid as the duchess of Pherae.

Roy and Sophia
Sophia accompanied Roy to Pherae, where they married. Although she was never very talkative, her wise decisions played a major role in the reconstruction of Lycia.

Super Smash Bros. Melee

SSB.png This article or section is a short summary of Roy.
SmashWiki features a more in-depth article.

Roy makes an appearance in the second game of fighting crossover series Smash Bros., Super Smash Bros. Melee. He appears as a "clone" character of Marth, meaning they share many similar attacks and similar poses. Roy's attacks are most powerful the closer the foe is to Roy, and some of Roy's attacks consist of fire upon contact. However, he is often viewed upon as an inferior version of Marth competitively.

When Melee was being translated for Western audiences, the developers first considered removing Roy and Marth, being unfamiliar characters to American audiences due to no actual other Fire Emblem line games being released in other countries. However the decision was made to keep Roy and Marth, with the inclusion of Japanese voice acting for both regardless if the language chosen is English. Due to this, fans began to show interest for the Fire Emblem series and thus began the series' overseas appearances.

His voice actor is Jun Fukuyama in all versions of the game.[7]

Trophies

Roy
SSBM Trophy Roy.png The son of the lord of Pharae Principality, Roy was studying in Ostia when the Kingdom of Bern invaded League of Lycia. His father fell ill at this time, so Roy assumed leadership of Pharae's armies. After his fateful meeting with the Princess Guinevere, his destiny became inextricably linked with the fate of the entire continent. Classic Mode
Roy [Smash]
SSBM Trophy Roy Smash 01.png While Roy's moves are well balanced, he's a little on the slow side, and doesn't excel at midair combat. His blade, the Sword of Seals, gives him excellent reach, and makes his Double-Edge Dance slightly different then Marth's Dancing Blade. When it's fully charged, Roy's destructive Flare Blade delivers an instant KO. Adventure Mode
Roy [Smash]
SSBM Trophy Roy Smash 02.png Roy's blade is different than Marth's: he does the most damage hitting with the center of his sword. So, a fearless advance into the arms of his foe is Roy's best bet. Blazer is a bit slower than Marth's Dolphin Slash, but it's still a mighty attack that sets anyone it strikes aflame. Roy's attack after using Counter differs slightly from Marth's. All-Star Mode

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

In Brawl, Roy was excluded while Marth made a reappearance, likely due to Roy fading away from the Fire Emblem series at the time. At the same time, Ike, who had recently appeared in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn was included in the game. Roy is only present in the game as a sticker.

Through hacking, it has been found that Roy might have originally been planned to appear as part of his programming can be found.
