Death feeds me. Death pleases me. I am the essence I consume.
— Nergal to Eliwood

Nergal (Japanese: ネルガル, Nergal) was a sorceror and a former friend of the Archsage Athos. His studies with Athos in Arcadia led him to delve deep into the dark arts surrounding the use of the quintessence of living creatures.

Template:FERK

Role

Nergal is the primary antagonist of Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade, leading to the events of the game. He and Athos became friends and found themselves in Arcadia. Nergal found the dragon's research into Morphs and wished to use the knowledge for his own gain, after a conflict with the village elders and Athos, Nergal vanished. Hundreds of years later, he started creating Morphs and used them to seize control of the Black Fang assassin guild, using both to try to incite conflict on such a wide scale that it would generate large amounts of quintessence to facilitate his ultimate aim: to open the Dragon's Gate, seize the quintessence of a dragon, and gain unparalleled power. Though he succeeded in opening the Dragon's Gate and releasing several dragons, he was killed by Eliwood of Pherae and his army before he could execute his plan.

What Nergal never realizes is that his true goal behind opening the gate was to regain his children, he only questioned his desire for power in his dying moments.

Translation errors

In the English version of Fire Emblem, Nergal's dialogue mentioning his wife, Aenir, is subject to a translation error or some sort of ambiguity, that may also be a translation error in itself. This has led to much confusion to the name of Ninian's mother, with many people thinking Ninis's Grace is named after her mother. This also significantly changed the implications in Nergal's death quote, as well as Nils' crying after Nergal's death.

Daddy has to go to Aenir... I’m going to get Mommy.
— Nergal in Chapter 19xxH: A Glimpse in Time

The first issue is in Chapter 19xxH: A Glimpse in Time, a Hector mode exclusive sidequest with obtuse unlock requirements. In a scene where Nergal is instructing his children, Ninian and Nils, to go through the Dragon's Gate if he does not return, he mentions "Aenir" but the localization's wording is most likely to be read as "Aenir" being the location that their mother is at. The Japanese version explicitly refers to Aenir as the mother.[1]

[...] More power... I must be...stronger... I... Why? Why did I... want power? ......Quintessence?
— Nergal's death quote

The second issue is his previously mentioned death quote. In the Japanese version Nergal refers to Aenir instead of quintessence. The words are similar in the Japanese version, as quintessence is called "Ægir". Compounding on the issue, the way Nergal says it in Japanese seems to make it intentionally ambiguous as to him saying "Ægir" or "Aenir".[2]

However, close scrutiny at the spelling of his dialogue shows he is remembering Aenir in his death quote.[3] This nuance is lost in the English release for several reasons, though mostly due to Ægir being renamed Quintessence and the localization seemingly not catching that Aenir was the name of Nergal's wife in the first place.

Battle quotes

So you're here, Eliwood. I thought losing Ninian might distract you. Have you forgotten her so quickly? How heartless.
— Against Eliwood in Eliwood's story.
So you've come, Hector of Ostia. Your existence itself was my greatest miscalculation. If it had only been Eliwood, this could have been over. So, my little miscalculation, I will erase you. And leave no trace remaining.
— Against Hector in Eliwood's story.
Did you know, Eliwood? What happened to your friend Hector? What he was thinking as he fought by your side?
— Against Eliwood in Hector's story.
I cannot understand you, Hector of Ostia. Why would you do all this for Eliwood? Is this miserable thing called friendship worth dying for?
— Against Hector in Hector's story.
Little girl from Sacae... You'd do well to vanish. One such as you is no match for me.
— Against Lyn.
Now, I see... You're Sonia's...
— Against Nino.
Hmph... It's you, Jaffar? Turning your sword against me, your master? Do you forget who raised you? You are worthless.
— Against Jaffar.
Heh heh... Athos... Take a good look at me! At my tremendous power!
— Against Athos.
Just an empty vessel... Isn't that what you wanted? You desired to bring back your dead friend. You were my experiment, and I completed my morph. I'm grateful, Renault. Thanks to you, I gained power.
— Against Renault.

References

  1. "In Chapter 19xx there is a flashback scene featuring a man and two children, who look suspiciously like younger versions of Nergal, Nils and Ninian. The man says “Daddy has to go to Aenir...I’m going to get Mommy”. This line was mistranslated and is supposed to read “Daddy has to go and get Aenir... Mommy”. In other words, Aenir is not the name of a place, but their mother." — VincentASM, Issues (webpage), Serenesforest.net, Published: ?, Retrieved: May 5th, 2015
  2. "So then, how did this happen if they got a lot of other things right? Well, it’s not entirely their fault. In the Japanese version, the word that translated to “Quintessence” was “Aegir.” You can already see where the problem came from. In his dialogue, he says “Ae...r” specifically with the third syllable (ni or gi) missing. The beauty of this is, in Japanese, that he could be referring to either Aenir or Aegir, which fuels that sort of confused daze he is in for a moment, obsessing over Aegir when his real reason was Aenir, see?" — Kirokan, Fire Emblem 7 – Comparing Nergal’s True “Why did I want power?” Dialogue [JPN/ENG], kantopia.wordpress.com, Published: September 22nd 2015, Retrieved: June 18th 2016
  3. "However. The game always wrote (in every instance I saw) “Aegir” as エーギル and “Aenir” as エイナール. Note that the original dialogue for the above has エイ instead of エー at the beginning –which is used exclusively for Aenir. For those who speak Japanese, this gets more complex yet more straightforward, as エー is ee, but エイ is as well! They both represent a long vowel, and so I figure this was to specifically differentiate the two very similar words." — Kirokan, Fire Emblem 7 – Comparing Nergal’s True “Why did I want power?” Dialogue [JPN/ENG], kantopia.wordpress.com, Published: September 22nd 2015, Retrieved: June 18th 2016
