Mage

The Mage (魔導士 Mage) is a basic magic-wielding class introduced in Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light, and one of the staple recurring classes of the Fire Emblem series. In each of the games they appear in, they wield offensively-oriented magic; though associated with the three magic types which comprise nature magic, their specific form of access to it depends on the game's available array of magic types. The Mage has appeared in every game except for Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, where instead the class is divided into the Fire Mage, Wind Mage and Thunder Mage classes, each specialising in the titular magic type; these divided specialist classes also existed in Genealogy of the Holy War alongside the Mage itself.
As an offensive class, the Mage's primary draws are its use of magic, which allows it to attack both at range and close up, and the fact that the bulk of enemy units have lower Resistance, allowing the potency of Mages' magic abilities to be a more effective form of offense against them; this is compounded by their typically high speed allowing them to double-attack most enemies and in particular making them particularly adept at killing Knights.
Conversely, Mages almost always possess low HP and Defense, making them highly susceptible to being killed or severely damged in one shot by most physical units. This is further compounded in games which feature the Constitution stat or use Strength in a similar capacity - Mages tend toward having significantly lower constitution than their melée counterparts, and even lower strength, which can often cause them to struggle when wielding heavier tomes, lowering their usually good attack speed. For their protection, a standard arrangement when using Mages in melée-heavy maps is to position them behind units with better defense, protecting them from most forms of melée harm and allowing them to attack approaching enemies at range.
In most games since Gaiden, Mages will class change to the Sage. In Ankoku Ryuu to Hikari no Tsurugi and Mystery of the Emblem, it instead promotes to Bishop, like the only other base magic class in the games. Other games have presented other promotion options for the Mage - Genealogy of the Holy War, Thracia 776 and The Sacred Stones offer the Mage Knight, Genealogy of the Holy War also had the Mage Fighter for female Mages, and Awakening offers the Dark Knight as an option.
