— Lucina

Lucina (Japanese: ルキナ Lucina) is a princess of Ylisse, the daughter of Prince Chrom and a distant descendant of the legendary Hero-King Marth. After her world fell to ruin at the hands of the Fell Dragon Grima in the future, she travelled back in time to save her father's life and avert the disastrous future whence she came. For a time she cloaked her identity as a traveller from the future under the guise of a mysterious warrior known only to others as Marth, taking the name from her famous ancestor, but later discarded this guise when she revealed her true nature to Chrom and joined his army, assisting him in conflicts with the Valmese Empire and the Grimleal.

Lucina is one of three protagonists of Fire Emblem Awakening, alongside Chrom and the game's Avatar. She is also set to debut as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, as one of four representatives of the Fire Emblem series.

Biography

Childhood and a bad future

Lucina as a baby, with her parents.

Lucina was born two years after Chrom's defeat of King Gangrel of Plegia; like her father, she bore the Brand of Naga which marked her as a worthy heir to the Ylissean bloodline, with her Brand located in the iris of her left eye. It is uncertain how many years she had with the Chrom of her timeline still living; she once described to the main-timeline Chrom how she and her timeline's Chrom had a close relationship where he often shared with her little secrets.[1] Nonetheless, this came to an end with Chrom's demise at the Dragon's Table, the events of which she heard only through rumors,[2] and the subsequent resurrection of Grima.

Over the course of over a decade, humanity and the rest of the world fell to Grima and his hordes of Risen, and Lucina worked with the children of Chrom's allies to fight back and protect other people. Lucina adopted the name of Marth as a pseudonym, hoping it would grant her the strength of her legendary ancestor to use to protect people, and took to wielding Falchion.[3] During this time she and her friends enacted a plan to try and restore the Fire Emblem in a bid to use its power against Grima, only to be unable to find the last of its gemstones at all;[4] as a result, the Awakening they could perform was only a partial one which restored a modicum of power to Falchion, transforming it into the Parallel Falchion.[5] As a last recourse, she and her friends conferred with Naga and had her enact a ritual to send them back in time to prevent Grima's rise to power in the first place. In preparation for her appearance in the past, she put on a mask given to her by one of her companions, Gerome, which would obscure her identity.[6] During their journey through time, however, she was separated from her eleven companions.[7]

As "Marth"

"Marth" assists Chrom and the Avatar in protecting Emmeryn.

Lucina arrived in the past shortly after Chrom's first meeting with the Avatar, around the same time the first Risen appeared in an attack west of Ylisstol. She saved Lissa from a Risen's blade and assisted in eradicating this first wave, and when confronted by Chrom she introduced herself only as Marth. She gave them a cryptic warning of how more Risen would come, then departed. Her first destination in the past was Basilio's castle in Regna Ferox, where Basilio let her battle against his champion, Lon'qu, whom she easily defeated once he noticed her true gender. Again introducing herself as Marth, Basilio took her on as his new champion for the upcoming tournament; Lucina agreed, intending to try and locate the Feroxi gemstone and to take the opportunity to test her strength against Chrom.[5] Soon after, the khan regnant tournament began in the Arena Ferox, and "Marth" led a band of Feroxi warriors against Chrom and the Shepherds, the rival khan Flavia's champion. Chrom prevailed in the tournament, winning Flavia's support for the Ylissean defense effort, and Lucina disappeared again.

Still under the "Marth" guise, Lucina soon reappeared in Ylisstol following the beginning of Ylisse's war with Plegia, sneaking into the castle grounds through a wall accidentally broken by Chrom some time earlier.[8] She sought to prevent Emmeryn's assassination and Chrom from sustaining a severe wound from an assassin's blade, both events contributing to her disastrous future, but after slaying one assassin her mask was broken by a second assailant, revealing to Chrom and the Avatar that she was in fact a woman. Still calling herself Marth despite the demasking, she helped defend Emmeryn while Chrom focused on eliminating their leader, Validar. She disappeared again after the battle, resurfacing briefly later on after Emmeryn's suicide at the Plegian capital, lamenting her failure to change fate.

With Chrom

Lucina's left eye, revealing her Brand.

For the next two years after Emmeryn's death, Lucina did not appear again throughout the end of the Plegian war or Chrom's reconstruction efforts. She resurfaced in the aftermath of Chrom's diplomatic meeting with the new Plegian king Validar on the Carrion Isle, defending him from the sudden appearance of a Risen assassin but accidentally calling him "Father". Afterward she revealed her true identity as Chrom's daughter, properly reuniting with him and with her initially-disbelieving mother. She gave Chrom and company a brief explanation of her origins from a Grima-ruled timeline and formally joined Chrom's party, seeking to prevent Grima's resurrection by aiding Chrom in the Valmese war and beyond. She also told Chrom of her eleven lost companions and how they may likely be found throughout the world.

Lucina's main contribution to the Valmese war arc came following the Ylisse/Ferox victory at Fort Steiger. In response to the castle being surrounded by the emperor Walhart's legions, Basilio resolved to lead a legion to distract him to allow Chrom's escape, only to be stopped by Lucina. Lucina revealed that in her timeline, this mission is what killed Basilio and attempted to dissuade him from going. Though she failed, her words convinced Flavia to go with him and ensured Basilio would be more cautious in battle, although Chrom's army was later informed that he had died anyway.

Following the Valmese war, Lucina accompanied Chrom to meet with Validar again in the Plegian capital, on the promise of receiving the final gemstone for the Fire Emblem. Before attacking them, Validar referred to Lucina as an interloper, revealing his knowledge of her otherworldly origins, and in the battle's aftermath Lucina bore witness to the Avatar snatching the Emblem from Chrom's hands under Validar's control. This event confirmed for her the suspicion that in her timeline, it was the Avatar who killed Chrom, doing so at Validar's mercy. To protect Chrom's life she resolved to execute the Avatar, only to be stopped by Chrom himself, who reaffirmed his utmost confidence in the Avatar. She accompanied them in the battle to stop Grima's revival at the Dragon's Table, only to witness the Avatar indeed strike down Chrom under Validar's influence. Though she initially believed it to be real, she was soon proven wrong with the reappearance of Basilio, who confirmed everything to be a ruse orchestrated by the Avatar. With Chrom still alive, she again aided them in fighting off Validar and the Grimleal one final time, and bore witness to the reappearance of Grima, in the form of her timeline's Avatar, and his resurrection of his full dragon body.

Having fled the Table with Chrom and his army as it collapsed under Grima's revival, Lucina travelled with them to Mount Prism to allow Chrom to perform the full Awakening. She accompanied Chrom and the Avatar in the final battle against Grima, and after a brief meeting with this timeline's infant incarnation of herself, she disappeared and was never seen again.

The Future Past

The alternate-timeline Lucina, victorious over Grima.

Yet another alternate-timeline Lucina, along with her friends, was the subject of a rescue effort by the main-timeline Chrom and the Shepherds. In their reality, similar to the one the main Lucina came from, Grima's conquest of humanity was nearing completion, with Risen flooding the land and murdering all who crossed their path. Lucina and her allies worked to save the world from Grima, and enacted a plan to find the Fire Emblem and its gemstones for use in an Awakening. Her eleven friends split off into three groups - Cynthia, Kjelle, Nah and Noire in the first, Owain, Brady, Inigo and Yarne in the second, and Gerome, Severa and Laurent in the third - to bring them back, while Lucina remained in Ylisstol with Tiki. While the eleven were gone, Ylisstol was invaded by a mysterious assailant, later revealed to be Grima himself, who slew Tiki while Lucina could do nothing but watch.

Gerome, Severa and Laurent soon returned to Ylisstol with the Emblem itself and one gemstone, but the four were accosted by the appearance of Grima himself and a legion of Grimleal. The four were severely wounded by a blast from Grima and resolved to die fighting despite their slim odds, but were saved by the appearance of the main-timeline Chrom and his allies, sent to aid them by Naga herself. With Chrom's aid the four survived and Grima was subdued, but Chrom and his allies were warped back to their own reality seemingly by Grima himself, an act which turned out to be an effort of defiance by the Avatar, Grima's host, to prevent Chrom from dying at their hand yet again.

Grima prepared to attack again, but was stopped by the arrival of Lucina's remaining eight allies and the last four gemstones, completing the Emblem. Although Grima claimed Naga to be dead and the Awakening to be impossible to complete, Tiki's spirit appeared before them to reveal her ascension to the position of the new Naga and that, with her corpse lying below, the Awakening was doable in Ylisstol itself. Lucina performed the Awakening with Tiki and gained her power, and while Grima struggled to overcome the Avatar's attempts to hold him back, Lucina struck Grima down and put him back to sleep, bringing an end to humanity's suffering in this timeline. Afterward, this Lucina became the new exalt of Ylisse to lead the survivors of humanity in rebuilding.

Fire Emblem Awakening

Role

Lucina joins the player's party under her true identity at the end of Chapter 13. Though a Lord character, Lucina's defeat is not a Game Over, and instead she permanently retreats in Classic Mode or temporarily retreats in Casual Mode.

Lucina makes two non-playable appearances before being recruited, both as her Marth guise: the first is as the boss of Chapter 4, and the second is as a NPC in Chapter 6 assisting in Emmeryn's defense; in both cases she has set stats and skills which are not affected at all if Chrom is already married at this point. An alternate-timeline NPC Lucina also appears in the DLC episode The Future Past 3: this Lucina's stats and skills are affected by those of her parents, and her death will result in a Game Over.

Personality and character

Lucina possesses a strong sense of justice and believes that saving the world is her mission and burden, and that failure is not an option. She greatly respects and adores Chrom, and as a result of his death in her bad future, she is constantly worried about his safety and sees his survival as paramount to the fate of the world. She has a weird sense of humour and, as indicated by her interactions with her mother, her understanding of non-military fashions is lacking.[9]

Endings

Lucina, Foreseer (single ending)
Lucina disappeared after whispering these words to her infant self: "Yours will be a happy future." Did she journey to another land or back to her own time? ...No one knows for certain.

Avatar (M) - High Deliverer & Lucina, Foreseer
Many wrote of Avatar's legendary exploits, but accounts of his origins and character varied. Scholars, poets, and bards agreed on one thing alone — he loved his wife, Lucina, above all else.

Owain, Chosen One & Lucina, Foreseer
Owain set off on a lengthy quest with Lucina to "stay his sword hand." Did they simply journey to another land, or did they return to their own time? None know for certain.

Inigo, Flower Picker & Lucina, Foreseer
Inigo traveled the world, ever ready with a smile or a solution when trouble started to brew. Lucina journeyed with him, and their home of the moment was always brimming with joy and laughter.

Brady, Daunting Priest & Lucina, Foreseer
Brady left the priesthood to become the world's scariest violinist. Every new rondo he composed passed first through the ears of his beloved wife and critic, Lucina.

Gerome, Masked Rider & Lucina, Foreseer
Gerome and Lucina were married and settled down near Wyvern Valley. While her husband never minced the few words he had to say, Lucina understood, and the two built a happy life.

Morgan, Gift from Afar & Lucina, Foreseer
Morgan's memory never returned, but he didn't seem to miss it much and lived happily with Lucina. Later, scholars would speculate he had come from a different future than the other children.

Yarne, Timid Taguel & Lucina, Foreseer
Yarne tried desperately to find a safe haven after the battles were done, but even that journey was fraught with danger—especially since Lucina was quick to dash to the rescue of every stranger.

Laurent, The Elucidator & Lucina, Foreseer
Longing to meet his mother's intellectual standards, Laurent took his wife on an expedition around the world. Lucina was reunited with Tiki and Naga and thanked them for helping to usher in peace.

The Wii U version of Monster Hunter: Frontier G, a massively multiplayer online RPG in Capcom's Monster Hunter franchise, will feature an exclusive armor set for female playable characters: the Lucina Hero-King Series, which allows them to dress as Lucina as part of a collaborative promotion. Accompanying the costume is a pair of weapons: the Parallel Falchion and Fire Emblem (Japanese: 裏剣ファルシオンI Hidden Sword Falchion I) as a shield and single-handed sword combo, and Nidhogg (Japanese: 蛇弓ニーズヘッグI Serpent Bow Nidhogg I) as a bow weapon.[10]

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U

SSB4 Lucina.png
SSB.png This article or section is a short summary of Lucina.
SmashWiki features a more in-depth article.

Revealed in a trailer on July 14th, 2014 alongside Robin and Captain Falcon, Lucina will be a newcomer playable character in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. She will be a straight clone of her ancestor Marth, featuring mostly identical attacks and motions with variations in her parameters; the main difference is that Lucina's sword's power will be distributed equally along the blade, whereas Marth's sword is most powerful at its tip. Director Masahiro Sakurai confirmed in his column in Famitsu that Lucina was originally planned simply as an alternative costume for Marth, but as development progressed, her attributes were altered to diverge from Marth's, leading to Sakurai's decision to turn her into her own separate character.[11]

All of Lucina's special moves are the same as Marth's, including their name. They are as follows:

  • Shield Breaker (Japanese: シールドブレイカー Shield Breaker): Lucina's standard special move. A lunging stab which can be charged up for a short period of time to strengthen the blow; at full strength, it can pierce shields.
  • Dancing Blade (Japanese: マーベラスコンビネーション Marvelous Combination): Lucina's side special move. A combination of four sword strikes, which attack in different directions depending on which way the analog stick is pointed for each swipe.
  • Dolphin Slash (Japanese: ドルフィンスラッシュ Dolphin Slash): Lucina's up special move. A sweeping upward strike which carries Lucina into the air; can be used as a recovery move to try and climb back onto a stage if Lucina falls off.
  • Counter (Japanese: カウンター Counter): Lucina's down special move. Lucina assumes a brief defensive stance and will retaliate if struck in this stance.
  • Critical Hit (Japanese: 必殺の一撃 Critical Hit): Lucina's Final Smash. A single rapid strike across the battle field which deals immense damage to the foe if it hits, accompanied by a rapidly depleting Fire Emblem-style HP bar.

Trophies

Lucina
SSB3DS Trophy Lucina 01.png NA: Chrom's daughter and the future Princess of Ylisse. When she arrives from a doomed future seeking to prevent it from ever happening, she goes by the name Marth before her identity is revealed. She fights much like her adopted namesake, but more than just the tip of her sword is powerful.

PAL: Daughter of Chrom and future Princess of Ylisse. When she comes from the future to prevent a terrible future from unfolding, she goes by the name of Marth, but only until her true identity comes to light. She is a very similar fighter to Marth, except it doesn't actually matter which part of her sword she strikes with.

Classic Mode
Lucina (Alt.)
SSB3DS Trophy Lucina 02.png NA: Lucina's moves are much like Marth's, but there are subtle differences. With Marth, you need to try to hit with the tip of his sword, but Lucina's sword is equally powerful all along the blade. Her Shield Breaker move lets her attack opponents and break their shields at the same time. Charge it fully to shatter shields in one hit.

With Marth, you need to try to hit with the tip of his sword, but with Lucina, it doesn't matter, making her easier to use. Her Shield Breaker move lets her damage opponents and break their shields at the same time. Charge it fully to shatter shields in one hit.

All-Star Mode

Code Name: S.T.E.A.M.

Lucina will feature as a bonus playable character in the Nintendo 3DS title Code Name: S.T.E.A.M..[12] Her appearance is triggered by using an amiibo at a specific point during gameplay. As is standard for the Fire Emblem series, but atypical of characters in Code Name: S.T.E.A.M., Lucina cannot be brought back into a battle after being defeated; instead, the player must use her amiibo again in order to use her again.

Trivia

  • Lucina's birthday matches the Japanese release date of two Fire Emblem series games: April 20th was the release date of both Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light in 1990, and of Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance in 2005. It also coincides with the Australian release date of Awakening itself.
  • Lucina has access to the highest potential number of optional classes of any unit in Awakening, and by extension the Fire Emblem series as a whole, if a female Avatar is her mother: 34, or 35 including the Bride. This is two higher than any other potential female daughter of an Avatar as Lucina has exclusive access to the Lord and Great Lord classes in addition to the full set of normal classes provided by the Avatar.

  1. "Lucina: So you say, but your blushing face seems a little less certain! ...Heh. It feels good to share a secret. It's been too long. You were always sharing little tidbits with me in the future.
Chrom: Was the future me really so furtive? I don't think of myself as a man of secrets.
Lucina: Oh, they were just silly little things. Still, it gave me a thrill to hear them.
Chrom: So the future me wasn't so furtive, but more of a hopelessly doting father?
" — Lucina and Chrom, Fire Emblem Awakening
  2. "Chrom: ...Do you know how I die?
Lucina: Only rumors... I was told you fell in a great battle, fought to sway your destiny. ...And that you were murdered—betrayed by someone dear to you.
" — Chrom and Lucina, Fire Emblem Awakening
  3. "After your murder and Grima's return, I took the name Marth and fought back. I prayed to the Hero-King for a small part of the strength he used to save the world. But I need this subterfuge no longer. I choose to fight as Lucina now. The name that reminds me of the strength in the man and woman who chose it." — Lucina, Fire Emblem Awakening

Marth: The cleft in the castle wall, behind the maple grove.
Chrom: There? But how would you...? Ugh.
Avatar: You know the place, Chrom?
Chrom Yes. I bashed in part of the wall while training the Shepherds. It's only a small hole, and I'd thought it well concealed, but...

  9. "I know! It's very modern. See all the giant pink polka dots? If you look carefully, you'll see that each one is a portrait of Emmeryn herself! I wager when father sees you in this, he'll just scream with delight!" — Lucina, Fire Emblem Awakening
