— Loptyr, possessing Julius

Loptyr (Japanese: ロプトウス Loputousu) was an earth dragon originally hailing from the Archanean dragonkin. He terrorized and dominated the people of Jugdral for centuries as the true ruler of the Loptyr Empire, through his blood-bond with and subsequent possession of the bishop Galle. Through the unholy tome bearing his power, Loptyr possessed the successive line of seventeen human emperors of the Loptyr Empire and, thousands of years later, their indirect descendant Julius of Grannvale.

Biography

Ancient Archanea and the Loptyr Empire

In the prehistory of Archanea, Loptyr was a member of the then-flourishing dragon civilization as one of the earth dragons. At the onset of the degeneration of the dragons, as with all earth dragons except Medeus, he refused to shed his dragon form to become a manakete and joined the earth dragons on a war against mankind. During this war, he was approached by the pilgrim Galle, who had come to Archanea seeking the power of dragons for himself.[1] Loptyr granted Galle's request, seeing it as an opportunity to exact his hatred and vengeance upon humanity on a wider scale than the current war,[2] and formed a blood pact with him, possessing his body and accompanying him back to Jugdral.

Upon Galle's return to Jugdral, he founded the Loptyrians, a religion based around the worship of Loptyr. Its then-unique access to magical powers of dragon origin served to quickly supplant the relatively powerless primal religions of Jugdral and control the society; this eventually culminated in the foundation of the Loptyr Empire in the year Grann 448, following the cult's obliteration of the continent's prior superpower, the Grann Republic, a year earlier.[3] The Loptyr Empire's rule imposed a strict caste system upon the society, condemning followers of other faiths to the lowest caste of society and to slavery, unless they were capable of paying enough money to enter the Loptyrian cult themselves.[4]

For two centuries, Loptyr ruled over Jugdral through a successive line of seventeen emperors, all named Galle and all possessed by him through the Loptyr tome. During his reign, the people of Jugdral were subjected to innumerable horrors, including numerous major massacres and the rise of the practice of child hunts, where children were rounded up to be sacrificed to Loptyr. In Grann 535, Loptyr rejected the work of Maira, the brother of the Emperor Galle of the time who sought to harmonize the existence of the Loptyrians with the prior religions of the world, and had Maira exiled, unwittingly securing his genealogical link to Jugdral's future. The first true concentrated effort of resistance against Loptyr first arose in Grann 611, with the rise of revolutions across all of Jugdral; however, by Grann 632, the resistance had been mostly crushed and confined to Darna, where in that year the Twelve Crusaders were born in the Miracle of Darna after Naga learned of Loptyr's role in the misery facing Jugdral. Sixteen years and a Holy War later, in Grann 648, the Loptyr Empire finally fell with the defeat of Galle XVII. With the death of his last host, Loptyr returned to dormancy within the Loptyr tome, which was taken into the custody of the remants of the Loptyrians.

Modern Jugdral

As Galle XVII died childless, the Loptyrians sought to create a new host for Loptyr using the descendants of Maira, bearers of minor Loptyr Holy Blood, who continued to live in seclusion in the Spirit Forest of Verdane. Their quest finally succeeded in Grann 760 with the marriage of Arvis of Velthomer to Deirdre; the two were half-siblings, both children of Cigyun and bearers of minor Loptyr blood, with the added benefit of Deirdre being the heiress to the throne of Grannvale. The two had two children, Julia and Julius, and as planned the latter possessed major Loptyr blood. In Grann 770, Julius was presented with the Loptyr tome by Manfroy, the present leader of the Loptyrians and architect of the plot behind Julius's birth; Loptyr's influence immediately took hold of Julius, turning him against Deirdre and Julia (both bearers of the major blood of Naga, enemy of Loptyr); Deirdre warped Julia out of Julius's range and was killed.

Under Loptyr's influence, Julius wrested control of the Grannvale Empire from his father, Emperor Arvis, and began to twist it into a facsimile of the Loptyr Empire. Under his rule, Grannvale mercilessly subjugated all nations of the continent, restored the Loptyrians to a position of power and reinstated the child hunt practice. However, while Loptyr did have a strong corrupting influence over Julius, the actual possession was not complete until Grann 777, in which Julius/Loptyr were challenged by Julius's elder half-brother, Seliph, and his revolutionary army against Grannvale. In a final battle, Julius/Loptyr was slain by Seliph and Julia, and in Julius's dying moments Loptyr briefly took full control to curse Naga's name and threaten that he would someday return so long as humans have evil in their hearts.

Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War

Role

Loptyr himself, in his original dragon form, appears as part of the Loptyr tome's spell animation, and again in a brief cutscene after Julius is defeated in the Endgame, emerging from his body and vanishing. Otherwise, every scene in which Julius appears in dialogue is technically also Loptyr making an appearance.

Fire Emblem: Thracia 776

Role

Again, Loptyr technically appears through Julius's minor speaking roles. Loptyr is overall less significant to the plot of Thracia 776 as a result of its narrow focus on the Thracian conflict.

Personality and character

As with all earth dragons, Loptyr possessed a burning hatred and resentment for mankind and the idea of becoming like them; however, he was shrewd enough to realize that accepting Galle's request for a blood-bond would enable him to more efficiently terrorize humanity, and so chose to accept this pact with a human rather than continue the war alongside the rest of his kind.[2]

  1. "The ancient dragon tribes possessed terrifying power and established a glorious civilisation, but they were currently facing extinction and it seemed impossible to avoid this fate. The Divine Dragon King, Naga, suggested to the other dragon tribes the idea of passing on the new age to the humans. However, the Earth Dragon tribe, who considered humans to be common insects, openly opposed the Dragon King's decision and launched an attack with the aim to exterminate the humans. To prevent this move, Naga started a great war, recorded in the holy scriptures of Akaneia as the "Guardian God Narga's War". In Genealogy of the Holy War, the ambitious Bishop Galle believed the legend that "drinking the blood of the ancient dragons grants one tremendous power and eternal life" and traveled around the world, finally arriving at the continent of Archanea. He met with one of the Earth Dragons, Loptyr, who allowed him to form a blood pact." - Designers' notes from a Genealogy of the Holy War playing guide, as translated by Serenes Forest
  2. 2.0 2.1 "Loptyr, Naga and Forseti held different positions compared to the other dragons. Loptyr's plan was obvious - "to use Bishop Galle to wreak vengeance on the humans", which is why he formed a blood pact with Galle. The holy dark tome Loptyr contained Loptyr's overpowering hatred and resentment towards humans, and was able to control the human who broke its seal (namely Bishop Galle's descendants, those who inherited large amounts of the original pact-former's blood). So it was, a human who possessed Loptyr's strength and will was born." - Designers' notes from a Genealogy of the Holy War playing guide, as translated by Serenes Forest
  3. "The holy workers before the Loptyr church commonly practiced rituals of the primal religion, and in reality they had no special abilities other than that they could read and write, had knowledge in herbs, and performed basic doctoral techniques. However, one of those people, Galle, acquired the power of Loptyr and came back to the country. After that, holy workers of the newly constructed Lopto church used special spellbooks and staves and was able to acquire supernatural powers. Then, they controlled the world using those powers as its backbone, and eventually founded the Loptyr Empire with Galle as its emperor." - Designers' notes from Treasure, as translated by Serenes Forest
  4. "Then the Loptyr Empire developed an absolute caste society. Especially followers of the other religion who was in the lowest caste became the Empire's slaves, and was forced to live a life worse than poverty. On top of that, in the current situation the majority of civilians were followers of another religion because they were too poor to enter the Loptyrians, meaning they were slaves.
