As strong as your loyalty is for the apostle, so is mine for General Zelgius.
— Levail

Levail (Japanese: ルベール Rubale) is a Begnion knight in the service of Lekain, the Duke of Gaddos, and is the general of Lekain's personal army. A great admirer and later follower of the legendary General Zelgius, Levail fought in the war between the Laguz Alliance and Begnion, in which he and Zelgius were forced to contend with the machinations of the Begnion Senate. Through their attempts to use the war to put an end to all laguz, and the conspiracy to silence the Apostle Sanaki, Levail abandoned his former master Lekain, the architect of the Senate's schemes, to follow Zelgius in supporting the cause of Zelgius's own master, Sephiran.

Biography

Early career

Levail joined the Begnion army as a young man after he came of age, and served for around 20 years prior to the outbreak of the war with the Laguz Alliance. In his youth he was inspired by Shiharam and Haar of the royal dracoknights, as well as Zelgius, and dedicated himself to living an honorable, chivalrous life like theirs.[1] He entered the service of Lekain and eventually became the general of his personal royal army.

The Laguz Alliance

In 648, the laguz nations Gallia, Phoenicis, and Kilvas declared war on Begnion for its senate's role in the Serenes Massacre, forming the Laguz Alliance. Levail and the Gaddos army, along with the Seliora army under Istvan, were deployed for the first major clash against the Alliance, although the power struggles of the senators controlling their armies hampered their ability to work together and resulted in a defeat. The tide soon turned with the arrival of Zelgius and the Central Army, which drove the Alliance into a retreat, then united with the northern nobles' armies, placing all of their forces under Zelgius's command.[2]

After the armies merged, Levail worked with Zelgius as a second-in-command, and the combination of the army's immense size and the competent leadership turned the tides of the war against the Laguz Alliance.[3] Levail was present with Zelgius at the battle of the Ribahn River and at the battle of Soze Pass, when Zelgius defeated Skrimir in a duel and called a ceasefire to allow the Alliance to safely retreat. When Lombroso broke the ceasefire by assaulting the Greil Mercenaries at Castle Seliora, Levail arrived late in the battle to force him to stand down.[4]

While the Laguz Alliance continued their retreat back to Gallia, Senator Valtome came and took control of the Begnion Central Army, ordering the army to push on into Crimea and launch a direct invasion of Gallia.[5] Levail was present with Zelgius at the helm of the Central Army as it met the Laguz Alliance in Crimean territory, but after Elincia laid down her sword to preserve the neutrality of Crimea in this war, Zelgius and Levail retreated with the bulk of the Central Army out of respect for Elincia's courage, despite the wishes of Valtome. However, Valtome ordered his personal army to attack anyway to make an example of Crimea, and on hearing of this, Zelgius refused to assist him despite Levail's worries.

In the aftermath of this battle, Valtome ordered Zelgius to be executed for defying and abandoning him, and Levail's attempts to convince him to spare Zelgius were ignored. Zelgius was saved, however, by the arrive of Apostle Sanaki and her Holy Guard, who accused the senate of treachery to seize control of Begnion. This divided the Central Army into two factions, one loyal to the senate and deriding Sanaki as a false apostle, and the other as followers of Sanaki. Zelgius remained loyal to Sanaki and Sephiran, and Levail followed suit, abandoning Lekain in favor of continuing to serve Zelgius.[6] The Sanaki faction of the Central Army formed the Apostle's Army, a coalition with Crimea and the Laguz Alliance to take back Begnion from the corrupt senators.

Disciples of Order

The war between the Apostle's Army and Begnion escalated, with Daein becoming involved on the senate's side, until the chaos caused by the warring forced the awakening of the goddesses Ashera and Yune. Levail was spared the petrification of Ashera's judgement and followed Zelgius into entering her service in the Disciples of Order, although his true loyalties remained with Zelgius alone and he had no interest in Ashera's aims.[7]

Yune eventually arrived at the Tower of Guidance with an army of survivors led by Ike and Micaiah, aiming to defeat Ashera and reverse her judgement, and Levail was part of the forces loyal to Ashera who defended the tower from their attack. As the group scaled the tower after defeating Lekain and Hetzel, they were met with Zelgius, who challenged Ike to one final duel. While this battle ensued, Levail was tasked by Zelgius with leading the Disciples of Order to defeat all intruders,[6] although he also commanded Levail to not harm Micaiah.[8] Both Zelgius and Levail fell in this battle, allowing Ike and Micaiah to continue their journey through the Tower.

Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn

Role

Levail is one of two bosses of the second stage of the Part IV, Endgame. He leads the majority of the chapter's enemies in the southern half of the map, cut off from Ike and the Black Knight in the north. Since the chapter's objective is to have Ike defeat the Black Knight, Levail can be ignored entirely, although defeating him awards the player with the regalia lance Wishblade.

Like some other Part IV, Endgame bosses, Levail is incapable of attacking certain units when they are enemies owing to his morals, his orders, or his personal relationships with them. He will never attack Micaiah, Sanaki, or the three herons. These units can all attack him, but he will never counterattack.

Unlike most bosses in Radiant Dawn, Levail is not designated as the commander of his faction, the Tower Guard, for the purposes of the authority stat. Instead, the Black Knight is his commander and Levail receives an authority bonus from him.

Personality

Levail is a strong believer in the ideals of chivalry, and even before they met, he was a great admirer of Zelgius because of this. He lamented how, by the time he joined the Begnion knighthood, chivalry had all but disappeared, and idolized Zelgius as the last true knight and the last remnant of the honor and spirit which the Begnion army once had. He proudly admitted to being willing to follow Zelgius no matter what happened, even if it meant dying in his name. He also admired Shiharam and Haar as worthy knights, and even though he was very young at the time, he considers their departure from Begnion to be the when the Begnion army lost its way.[1]

During his tenure as Lekain's general, he grew greatly frustrated with the behavior of the senators and their obession with glory and rewards over the practical reality of the war, and while he attempted to reason with them, they never listened.[9] He was also critical of how the senators' refusal to work together or figure out which of them should take the lead led to their armies performing poorly and without central direction, and believed that Zelgius would rectify that.[2] He was willing to bluntly criticize the military plans of senators to their faces in a heated way, getting particularly heated when Zelgius's own life was at stake, such as when Valtome wished to have him executed.[10]

Even after Ashera's awakening, Levail did not care for her cause even as he led the Disciples of Order, and fought only for Zelgius,[7] who in turn fought for Sephiran. Levail's loyalties lied with Zelgius above all others, and even though he insisted he was not an enemy to Empress Sanaki, he followed Zelgius's orders which put them on opposing sides in battle.[6]

Quotes

Battle quotes

Face me in an honorable duel, and know that I shall be the one to take your life.
— Levail, as the boss of the Part IV, Endgame (2) in Radiant Dawn.
Sigrun: Sir Levail, you stand against Empress Sanaki. Lay down your weapons.
Levail: I cannot, Lady Sigrun. As strong as your loyalty is for the apostle, so is mine for General Zelgius.

— Levail, when fighting Sigrun in Part IV, Endgame (2) of Radiant Dawn.
Tanith: Sir Levail! How dare you raise your sword against Empress Sanaki! Has Goddess Ashera taken over your mind, too?
Levail: No, Lady Tanith. I fight for General Zelgius. I care not for the goddess's cause.

— Levail, when fighting Tanith in Part IV, Endgame (2) of Radiant Dawn.
Levail: Duke Tanas! I thought you were executed as a slave trader three years ago.
Oliver: True beauty is immortal. Look at me. Right now, I am flawless. You are not without potential. With education, you could aspire to be me.
Levail: ...No, thank you.

— Levail, when fighting Oliver in Part IV, Endgame (2) of Radiant Dawn.

Levail: Lady Astrid, please stand down. A lady like you shouldn't have taken up a weapon in the first place.
Astrid: No, I am a knight of Crimea, here to fight you. Please forget about the past. The Lady Astrid you knew no longer exists.
Levail: You have indeed become strong. Very well! Prepare yourself!

— Levail, when fighting Astrid in Part IV, Endgame (2) of Radiant Dawn.

Levail: Captain Haar! You are still alive!
Haar: What happened that you didn't expect me to survive?
Levail: Um... Nothing, I suppose. It's just that it's been a while since you left Begnion.
Haar: Yeah. Twenty years ago, wasn't it?
Levail: I was still very young at the time. You had just been dubbed a knight. Oh, it brings back such memories... The bravery of the dracoknights, especially the Fizzart Platoon. It was legendary among the soldiers. But then you suddenly defected to Daein.
Haar: I got sick of taking orders from corrupt senators, so I ditched the country with General Shiharam.
Levail: I joined the army after I came of age. But it was different after you all left. It was as if you took its spirit with you. The only exception was General Zelgius, the general of Duke Persis's army.
Haar: I see. Is that why you're under his command?
Levail: Yes. He is the last true knight. I will die for him.
Haar: Yes, Levail. You will.
Levail: How I dreamed of fighting a proper foe! I am honored, Sir Haar! Have at you!

— Levail, when fighting Haar in Part IV, Endgame (2) of Radiant Dawn.

Zelgius: General Levail of Duke Gaddos's northern force, is it? Are you in command here?
Levail: No, not I. Rather... The northern force lacks any order. We do not have a central commander to direct us in battle.
Zelgius: So, each force was fighting the enemy on its own?
Levail: Quite so. Taking orders from others is beneath the nobles, I suppose.
    Zelgius: How pitiful.
Levail: A sad state of affairs, yes. But now that you are here, General, the situation will be rectified.
" — Levail and Zelgius, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  3. "Ranulf: This might be the end of our war. The Northern and Central Armies have merged. A force of that size is too powerful for us. If Tibarn and Naesala can't help us, it might be a good idea to go back to Gallia and regroup. Convincing Skrimir won't be easy, but I can't let our people get killed in a hopeless battle.
Ike: Understood. Ranulf, this is your war, so I'll follow your orders. I have to say, though, retreating won't be easy. According to Soren, the Central Army has mobilized and begun marching on our position during the last few days.
Ranulf: They finally brought in a competent commander, huh?" — Ranulf and Ike, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  4. "Levail: Lord Lombroso! Stop fighting at once!
Lombroso: You're Levail, correct? Zelgius's lapdog?
Levail: Commander Zelgius ordered all forces to cease fire for three days. How dare you ignore his order! Keep your tongue behind your teeth, and pull all of your troops back to base camp immediately!
Lombroso: I'll pull back for now, but you'd better be prepared for the consequences, you witless lackey.
" — Levail and Lombroso, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  5. "Zelgius: Are you sure? We have visual confirmation of the Laguz Alliance heading into the Kauku Caves?
Levail: Yes, sir. The enemy must be desperate. Why else would they enter that forsaken death trap?
Zelgius: We cannot go there without preparation. It would be suicide. Let's not follow them to their deaths. ...That ends our pursuit, then. Tell the men that this mission is over.
Valtome: I cannot allow you to do that, my dear General.
    Zelgius: You're--! Senator Valtome.
Valtome: Uwee hee hee. You're not even a tiny bit surprised, Lord Zelgius of Cador? What a frightful bore you are. I came here in secret just to surprise you.
Zelgius: Oh, I am surprised indeed. What would bring a senator of your station to a place like this? Do you bring new orders?
Valtome: Uwee hee hee. Oh, yes. I am here to deliver a decision handed down by the senate. In its wisdom, the senate has appointed me commander in chief of the Imperial Army. From this moment on, this army is mine.
Zelgius: ...I see. Then I am at your command. Your orders, Commander?
Valtome: Uwee hee hee. Oh, you are ever so serious! You haven't changed one bit, Zelgius. One of these days, I will catch you off guard. Well, I suppose that impassive face of yours is just part of your charm.
    Zelgius: ...Senator Valtome. Your orders.
Valtome: Oh, yes, orders. Hmm, well, this battle is taking far too long for my taste. We will pull back and conquer Gallia by taking a different path.
" — Zelgius, Levail, and Valtome, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  6. 6.0 6.1 6.2 "Sanaki: I know you... You were a general in the Gaddos army. Did Zelgius betray Sephiran and side with the senate?
Levail: No, no! I swear upon the general’s good name that he would do no such thing! I was the one who abandoned the duke of Gaddos to follow General Zelgius.
Sanaki: What is going on here? I don’t understand the relationship between the Black Knight and the senate, or who is friend or foe...
Levail: Of one thing I am certain, Empress Sanaki. We are not your enemy!
Sanaki: Then order your men to stand down! I must speak with Zelgius. Take down that barrier!
Levail: I cannot do that. General Zelgius was very clear: he wishes to fight that man. Alone. My orders are to eliminate any intruders inside the tower in the meantime. My deepest apologies, Empress.
Sanaki: Wait! I won’t allow it! Halt, Levail! Halt!
" — Sanaki and Levail, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn

  8. "Levail: You must be the Silver-Haired Maiden, Micaiah, correct?
    Micaiah: Who are you?
Levail: Don’t worry, I’ve no intention of harming you. Far from it, in fact. I’m under orders from General Zelgius to keep my men away from you. Please retreat. I don’t want to disobey the general.
" — Levail and Micaiah, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  9. "Begnion Soldier: General Levail! How did it go?
Levail: It was no use. No one would even listen to me. It makes my heart heavy. The nobles are too busy competing with one another for rewards and status to realize the danger to their lands.
Begnion Soldier: Rewards? Are they crazy? The sub-humans are at their doors, and all they care about is some reward?!
Levail: They only listen to each other. No one wants to listen to me.
Begnion Soldier: General Levail, how are we going to survive this?
" — A Begnion soldier and Levail, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  10. "Valtome: I shall now dispense punishment for disobeying my orders! General Zelgius! Do you have anything to say? I would hear your pleas now.
Zelgius: ...I am prepared to face the consequences of my actions.
Valtome: Quite an admirable sentiment, General. Although I imagine you should have thought about the consequences before you abandoned your allies! Now, on your knees. It's time for your execution. Good-bye, General Zelgius.
Levail: Wh-what?! Senator! I must ask you to reconsider! To execute a man of General Zelgius's caliber without a trial... It's madness! It's horrible!
Valtome: Levail, are you questioning a senator? A senator holds the right to punish a prisoner however he sees fit! Oh, I'll make sure to tell our people that the general was cut down in battle after felling hundreds of sub-humans. That way, the people will not trouble themselves over details that they couldn't possibly understand.
Levail: You would bury the truth?! Do you think the apostle is as easily fooled by your lies?!
Valtome: Oh, I sincerely doubt the apostle will ever get to hear them.
