— Jarod

Jarod (pronounced /ˈdʒɛɹəd/[key][1]; Japanese: ジェルド Jeld) is a soldier of Begnion who served Duke Numida of Numida. He was the general of Begnion's occupational garrison in Daein under Numida's command, and perpetuated a brutal regime over the country which drove its people into poverty and famine, intended by Jarod to strip away any chance of the people of Daein ever having the will to fight back. He was a bitter enemy of Micaiah and the Dawn Brigade, and became increasingly obsessed with hunting them down and defeating Micaiah as she led the Dawn Brigade, and later the Daein Liberation Army, to more and more victories over the Begnion garrison.

Biography

Jarod was born as part of a minor noble house in Begnion, but when he joined the Begnion army, he earned his rise through the ranks through his own skill and not his bloodline. He first entered the service of Numida by joining his private army.[2]

After Ike and the Crimean army defeated King Ashnard of Daein and ended the Mad King's War, Crimea chose not to take control of Daein for itself and handed responsibility over the country to Begnion.[3] Begnion established an occupation garrison in Daein to secure the country. Numida was apppointed as the occupational governor of Daein, and Jarod was given leadership of the garrison itself under Numida's command. Jarod established a series of labor camps and forced all adult Daein men to work in them, aiming to break them both physically and mentally to prevent the chance of them ever fighting back. This also led to poverty and starvation, as farms and other industries were no longer tended to.[4] Jarod also used funds stolen from Daein to fortify its troops and buy the service of mercenaries to reinforce its numbers.[5]

Jarod first became aware of the Dawn Brigade and the "Silver-Haired Maiden" who led them three years into the occupation, in the summer of 648, after they evaded capture in the capital Nevassa and fled the city. After the Dawn Brigade raided a manor in the countryside to retrieve medicine for Laura's abbot, Jarod kidnapped Laura and used her to lure Micaiah into a trap, arresting both and taking them to Glaive Prison, where they later escaped. During this time he authorized a Begnion expedition into the Desert of Death to find the rumored heir to Ashnard and put a stop to his attempts to raise a liberation army.

Later, when Micaiah returned as the leader of Pelleas's liberation army and began to lead successful resistance campaigns against the occupation, Jarod and Numida determined that it was necessary to put an end to the Daein Liberation Army before their superiors in Begnion could find out about the resistance or of their abuses, and so Numida gave Jarod all the funding he needed to achieve this.[6] However, through the efforts of Sothe and Tormod, the Begnion empress Sanaki found out anyway and formed an inspection team to confirm the abuses in Daein. Numida ordered Jarod to finish off the Liberation Army before they could encounter the inspectors, so Jarod formed a plan to lure them to their deaths in Shifu Swamp, but after this failed Numida betrayed Jarod and claimed to Sanaki that all of the garrison's crimes were conducted without Numida's knowledge at all.

Sanaki sent a command to Jarod to have all forces stand down in anticipation of the inspectors, and Jarod realized that Numida had betrayed and scapegoated him. Jarod knew that Numida and the rest of the senate would work to silence Jarod and his soldiers, to prevent them from implicating Numida, and knowing that the end was near, Jarod resolved to at least bring Micaiah down with him as revenge for driving him to this point.[7] On the evening of a Liberation Army celebration at the news of Sanaki's intervention, Jarod and his men ambushed Micaiah after she left the celebration alone, and threatened to kill her to put an end to the real symbol of hope of the Liberation Army, dismissing Pelleas as worthless in comparison to her. He was foiled by the arrival of the Black Knight, who worked with Micaiah to defeat Jarod and his soldiers, but Jarod himself was spared as his lieutenant, Alder, took a blow from the Black Knight for him. Micaiah let Jarod escape to bury Alder.

Having been driven into a corner by his defeat by the Black Knight, Jarod took his revenge with one last, massive act of defiance. He murdered a Begnion emissary and took control of Daein Keep, then unleashed a catapult assault on the city of Nevassa to destroy it. Micaiah and the Daein Liberation Army launched a counterattack to seize Daein Keep back from Jarod, who led his men in a last stand to die gloriously in battle, rather than be dishonored by surviving or fleeing.[8] Jarod died at the hands of Micaiah's forces in this battle, bringing an end to the war for Daein's liberation.

Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn

Role

Jarod appears twice as a boss in Part 1, first in Chapter 9, and again in the Endgame. In both chapters he acts as the commander of the Occupying Army units, and his defeat is necessary to clear each chapter.

In Chapter 9, Jarod is not present on the map at first. He only appears after Micaiah and the Black Knight have defeated all other enemies on the map, spawning in roughly the same place where the two playable units started the chapter. His defeat ends the chapter.

In the Endgame, Jarod is guarding the seize point and must be defeated for Micaiah to seize and clear the chapter.

Personality

Described by even his most loyal subordinate, Alder, as "a terror to work under",[9] Jarod was a harsh and temperamental commander who had no patience at all for failures under his watch. He would kill soldiers who he viewed as "incompetent" with no hesitation at all. He had little to no respect or interest in the Daein people under his command, again being willing to kill them without hesitation if they got in his way,[10] He was fully aware of just how horrible the acts he perpetrated upon Daein were, but took a perverse sort of pride in the knowledge that he conducted the occupation his way and had no interest in backing down or covering up the acts. After his death, Micaiah would later claim that Jarod was at least honest about his villainy, in contrast to his master's attempts to cover up his involvement.[11]

Quotes

Battle quotes

Micaiah: General Jarod! Your occupation army has caused untold suffering to the people of Daein... The time has come! You must atone for your deeds!
Jarod: As if I should care one whit about the wretched worms I trample!

— Jarod, when fighting Micaiah in Part I, Chapter 9 of Radiant Dawn.
Jarod: I see you're pretty impressed with yourself!
Black Knight: Did you think the likes of you could be a worthy opponent for me? Know your place.

— Jarod, when fighting the Black Knight in Part I, Chapter 9 of Radiant Dawn.
So, you have the audacity to approach me at last. Don't expect an easy fight. Before I die, I will see each of you dead before me.
— Jarod, as the boss of the Part I, Endgame in Radiant Dawn.
So, sub-human, the slave turns on the master? I'll teach you to know your betters!
— Jarod, when fighting a laguz unit in the Part I, Endgame in Radiant Dawn.
You're one aren't you? One of those odd sub-humans that witch brought... You'll make a nice rug
— Jarod, when fighting a wolf laguz in the Part I, Endgame of Radiant Dawn.
Jarod: So it's you...little girl.
Micaiah: General Jarod, the battle is over. Surely you can see it. You never believed Daein could do it did you? But here you stand, broken, defeated by my countrymen and friends.
Jarod: Have I really, I wonder? Didn't I tell you? With you dead, there is no "Liberation Army." This is my golden opportunity... One blow is all it takes to turn defeat to victory. Such a lovely thought.
Micaiah: I will not lose to you. More importantly, the people of Daein will not lose to you!

— Jarod, when fighting Micaiah in the Part I, Endgame of Radiant Dawn.

Jarod: That face... I remember you. The kid who's always with that little wench.
Sothe: Sothe, of the Dawn Brigade.
Jarod: The Dawn Brigade, hm? Oh, how I despise your ilk. The thought of draining the life from your body... It makes me tingle all over.
Sothe: Ditto.

— Jarod, when fighting Sothe in the Part I, Endgame of Radiant Dawn.
A heron? One of you survived? How sad. On the plus side, if I take you back home, the money will set me up for life!
— Jarod, when fighting Rafiel in the Part I, Endgame in Radiant Dawn.
Jarod: Well well well. Look what we have here. The loathsome phantom of old Daein... Why in blazes are you here? What inspired you to slooooowly clank your way up out of your grave?
Black Knight: My purpose is not for you to know.
Jarod: Oh. I feel so rejected. Must I crack that helm open and ask your ugly, naked face directly!? I have to take vengeance for Alder's death, after all!
Black Knight: This is how you meet your death? Sad. Come at me then, and join your friend.

— Jarod, when fighting the Black Knight of Radiant Dawn.

Death quotes

Gh- ghuahh... I am...sorry for nothing. I regret...nothing. Because I did it my way... You win, Priestess. You must be delighted. Enjoy it while you can... Because...sooner or later...you...
— Jarod, as the boss of the Part I, Endgame in Radiant Dawn.

  6. "Jarod: Nevertheless, as the insurgence grows, news of it will inevitably reach Begnion.
Numida: Yes... I see what you mean. That would be...less than desirable.
Jarod: The Imperial Prime Minister Sephiran casts a grim eye on dishonesty. If he finds out what has been going on in Daein under our rule...
Numida: That would not be good. Sephiran’s persistent as a mosquito and quick to judge. Though you and I know I have been nothing but fair and just in my rule here...it’s best to avoid an inquiry.
Jarod: Which leaves us but one recourse... Crush the rebel faction before it grows larger. Exterminate them. Then the commoners, bereft of all hope, will turn their sheep eyes back to us and beg to rejoin the flock.
Numida: I see. Well, I leave the matter in your hands. What funding you need is yours.
Jarod: I’m glad we agree on this. Well then, pardon me, sir, while I tend to our little lambs on the loose.
" — Jarod and Numida, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  7. "Messenger: ...In light of which, Her Imperial Highness, Empress Sanaki, has conveyed to you this edict. Occupation forces are to hereby lay down all arms, convene in Daein Keep, and await the inspection team.
    Jarod: Hmmm...
Messenger: Duke Numida maintains that your forces performed alleged abuses independently... in flagrant violation of his orders. The apostle, in her mercy, will hear your testimony. Do not abuse her magnanimous spirit...and lose your small advantage.
Jarod: Hah! What a magnificently ruthless maneuver. I didn’t know Numida had it in him. Disowning the entire occupation army...and framing me for their actions. Brilliant.
Alder: So then...the game is over. Might we at least drag Duke Numida down with us?
Jarod: Not a chance. We are proof that Duke Numida–and therefore the entire senate–is corrupt. No doubt they’ll work together to silence us. Besides, there’s more tantalizing prey than those tottering relics. If I’m to fall, so too should the one who upended our plans and drove us to this dead end... That girl.
Alder: Oh... I like that. Our final mission.
Jarod: You create a diversion with the troops tonight, after dark. And I will seek our target...the girl’s silver-maned head.
" — A Begnion messenger, Jarod, and Alder, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  8. "Listen up, all of you. This is our last chance to die as we’ve lived. As proud soldiers of the empire. If we survive this fight, imprisonment and a hushed-up execution await us. If we run from this fight, dishonor and pursuit will dog our miserable days. So I say, let’s give those Daein curs a fight to remember, and let the glory of our deaths light our way! We’ve lived as proud soldiers of the empire! Let us die as proud soldiers of the empire!! Now GO!" — Jarod, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  9. "Jarod: Alder?! You... Why are you here?
Alder: I’d rather fight beside my general than create a distraction with the other soldiers.
Jarod: You idiot! Who asked you to join me?
Alder: General Jarod... You are a terror to work under. Even so...I’ve always sensed a kindred spirit in you. I will follow you and fight for you...to the very gates of the abyss...
Jarod: He was a good soldier... What now? Why don’t you kill me?
" — Jarod and Alder, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  10. "Soldier: What is wrong with you people?! Did you hear me?! Clear a path, or you’ll end up like that kid!
Jarod: You sniveling idiots! Why are you just standing there?! Give chase. Now!
Begnion Soldier 2: Yes, sir! We would like to, sir, but... the townspeople are blocking our way.
Jarod: Oh...I see. The townspeople are blocking your way. You dullards!
    [Jarod kills a villager.]
Jarod: Clean out those dirty ears and listen to me! You are soldiers, and I am your commander! You will follow my orders promptly and without hesitation. Understand, you useless vermin? Now, move! Unbelievable! If it’s not one thing, it’s another. Why am I always stuck leading the buffoons?
" — A Begnion soldier and Jarod, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  11. "Numida: Ah, you’re from Daein. you should know that I had nothing to do with that unpleasantness. That was all General Jarod’s doing.
Micaiah: General Jarod was a scoundrel and a fiend, but at least he had a soldier’s honesty in his villainy. You black-hearted senators nauseate me, weaving a dense tapestry of lies that you yourselves believe!
