Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Jake is a member of a very unique class, the Ballistician, that comes with some positives. Some of their weapons deal bonus damage to certain enemy types—specifically, the Arrowspate, which Jake has in his inventory, that deals bonus damage to flying units, and the Thunderbolt, which deals bonus damage to enemy ballisticians. Jake's availability is not terrible, as he joins a little under half way through the game. Also, his base weapon level is high enough to use every ballista. Lastly, his base defense of 14 makes him good at tanking damage. Unfortunately, these strengths pale in comparison to the crippling flaws Jake has. His horribly low speed in conjunction with the relatively high weight of ballistae means he will get doubled by practically any enemy he can come up against; his terrible skill means that his accuracy will be pitiful; he has a hard time contributing damage on enemy phase due to being locked to 2-range; his most damning flaw, however, is his absolutely abysmal movement of 4, tied with Beck—another Ballistician—for the lowest in the game. In order for Jake to contribute to your team you will have to slow your other units to a crawl, which is very impractical because often enemy reinforcements will continuously spawn if you take too long on a map. The only way to make him viable is to give him the Boots, but even with that he will still be a mediocre unit, and the Boots are better off being used on a unit that could contribute more to your team, Marth in particular makes great use of them, considering he is the only unit that can seize or visit villages. Jake should only be used if you let almost all of your units die and you need someone to fill a deployment slot, otherwise, avoid at all cost.
Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
Jake takes on an NPC role in Genealogy of the Holy War, appearing should either Linda or Amid each approach a certain spot on the chapter 8 map (Linda's spot is further to the southwest than Amid's). Jake had initially intended to join Seliph's liberation army, but got lost in the area and gave up his pursuit, now seeking to simply get back home to Anna; he also admits to having a fear of ballistae and admits he would not have been of much help to Seliph. Jake will eventually give Linda and Amid each a talisman, represented within the game as a +3 boost to their Resistance.
Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade
Jake takes on an NPC role as a member of Fargus's pirate crew in Fire Emblem. The player is first tipped off to his existence by speaking to Anna at the inn in chapter 16x (17x Hector); once that is done, in the following chapter, Jake will appear, introduce himself as a new member of the crew, and tips the player off to the ship's armory and vendor, also telling the player that he/she can't stock up once they reach the Dread Isle. Should the player not have visited Anna and thus not learned about Jake, Dart will take Jake's role in revealing this information.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Jake is the first Ballistician to join, and while his base stats are terrible, his unique ability to attack an enemy up to 10 spaces away makes him very valuable. His strongest point is his ability to annihilate far-away flying units and troublesome enemy ballisticians using the Arrowspate and Thunderbolt respectively. These weapons can be forged later in the game when these enemies become too durable to one-shot normally. He can also use the reliable Hoistflamme or the powerful Pachyderm to deal chip damage to dangerous promoted enemies with absolutely no risk of counterattack. His stats are almost meaningless, meaning he requires no training and can be deployed and undeployed as needed without hurting his viability. His only disadvantages are his inability to counterattack and the worst mobility in the game. Jake pairs well with the other ballistician Beck or a shifted Xane, as the two can trade forged ballistae back and forth to increase their damage output.
Jake and Beck function almost identically, except Jake has slightly worse base stats and slightly better growths. The ballisticians' EXP gain is alarmingly fast, but leveling up doesn't let them accomplish much more than they can with just their starting stats.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Jake possesses incredible offensive growth rates, with his speed growth in particular reaching 100% when he is reclassed to Berserker. However, his base stats are quite low, so he can struggle to contribute on higher difficulties without using forged weapons. He has a solid set of weapon levels: C in axes and in bows, the latter of which becomes B as a Sniper, but due to his low initial stats, Jake does not make good use of these levels until he gains a couple of levels. He is inherently a training project, the return on which is a set of excellent offensive stats, but who cannot contribute much when he joins and relies on stronger units feeding him kills.

Trivia
- Compared to their portraits, Jake's design from Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light was switched with that of Beck in their official artwork for Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light and the Fire Emblem Trading Card Game as well as their Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon designs.
- It is possible their portraits were mis-assigned during the development of Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light. Aside from the above material, the sly smile on Beck's portrait fits Jake's personality more than it does Beck's nervous personality.
- Despite not having proper data, Jake has an assigned inventory in his brief appearance in The Blazing Blade. He holds a Steel Axe, a Hand Axe and a Torch.
