The Hero (勇者 Hero) is an advanced infantry class which debuted in Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light and is present in almost all subsequent games, acting as the promoted form of the Mercenary in most of its appearaces. It is absent only in Genealogy of the Holy War and Thracia 776, in which its role as the promoted class for the Myrmidon is filled by two functionally identical classes: the Forrest in the former, and the Mercenary in the latter. In addition to its usual role as a normal class, the Hero has twice served as a Lord-like class exclusive to the protagonist of a game: it is Alm's promoted class in Gaiden, and Ike's base class in Radiant Dawn. Additionally, it exists as a class exclusive to the NPC Greil in Path of Radiance, unavailable to the player.

Ever since Genealogy of the Holy War, the Hero (or its substitutes) has acted as a counterpart and opposite to the Swordmaster class: compared to Swordmasters, Heroes trade Skill and Speed for greater Strength and slightly improved HP and Defense. As such, they typically make for superior front-line units, capable of dealing very substantial damage while being durable enough to survive bombardment in the enemy phase. As with most other physically-oriented units, however, the class's Resistance is lacking on average.

Traditionally, the Hero is the promoted form of the Mercenary, although variations on this exist. The Sacred Stones and Awakening give Mercenaries a secondary alternative to Heroes, the Ranger and Bow Knight respectively, while also allowing Fighters to promote to Hero; Fighters also promote to Hero in Gaiden, with both being Alm's personal classes. Heroes do not promote from anything in Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn, and in the latter as Ike's initial class it has a third-tier promoted form, the Vanguard.
