The Gargoyle (Japanese: ガーゴイル Gargoyle) is a monster class that originates in Fire Emblem Gaiden and returns in Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones. In both instances, it is an enemy-only class. Gargoyles are flying beasts that attack fiercely and often in groups. In Gaiden, gargoyles don't have an assigned weapon type, though their animation depicts them attacking with a scythe, a weapon that does not appear anywhere else in the series. In The Sacred Stones, they use lances, making them similar to the playable Pegasus Knight or Wyvern Rider classes. Like the beforementioned classes, gargoyles are also weak to bows, and the Wind Sword.
Gargoyles through series history have had two "promotions". In their original game, Gaiden the more powerful variant, and thus the "promoted" version, was the Balrog. The Sacred Stones introduced a different promoted variant, the Deathgoyle. As in both games gargoyles appear in, they are unable to actually promote, but these are considered promotions due to similarity between the classes and an increase in power.

"Gargoyles" are statues or carved faces of usually animal-like and sometimes grotesque figures built on the roofs of buildings such as churches and castles. Their practical purpose is to draw away water, but also to ward off evil. [1]
