Freelancer (コマンド, Komando, Commando) is a class exclusive to Xane, who appears in FE1, FE3, and their respective DS remakes. The main function of the Freelancer class is its ability to transform into other classes. Xane can stand next to any ally and select the "Imitate" function on the menu, and he will transform into the neighboring ally's class, copying all of his or her stats and weapon ranks. Five turns later, he will transform back, and the player can choose a different ally to copy. In this transformation, Freelancers copy not only stats, but also properties of other classes, such as a Thief that can pick locks; however, this is inconsistent in that imitating a Lord cannot does not allow the unit to seize, and that imitating a Dancer does not allow the unit to dance. Because of their special function, Freelancers can be a valuable tool in battle, and their ability to be manipulated can be very useful.

The Freelancer (コマンド Commando) is a class introduced in Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light. Appearing only in the two Archanea titles and their remakes for Nintendo DS, this class is entirely exclusive to the playable character Xane. In the original games, the Freelancer class can wield swords, but in the remakes they wield no weapons of their own.

In this transformation, Freelancers copy not only stats, but also properties of some other classes, such as a Thief that can pick locks; however, they cannot copy a Lord's ability to seize or a Dancer's ability to dance.

Freelancers have low stats in and of themselves, though they have adequate resistance. Their low stats are, of course, balanced by the fact that they can copy the stats of any ally. Freelancers cannot class change, nor can they be reclassed. The remakes classify Freelancers as a special class and thus allow them to grow to Level 30, though it tends to prove unnecessary because most of the time they spend in battle will be spent using someone else's stats.
