The Fighter (Japanese: 戦士 Fighter, or アクスファイター Axe Fighter) is a basic class which debuted in Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light and is present in some form in every game in the Fire Emblem series; as of Fates, the Fighter is the only class to have appeared in every title of the series without the aid of downloadable content. In every appearance it makes except Fire Emblem Gaiden, it is a common infantry class which exclusively wields axes; however, in Gaiden it instead acts as Alm's personal base class and wields swords.
Conventional Fighters are defined by their immense strength, also possessing significant HP. However, their other defensive stats are lacking in comparison to other classes, typically causing them to be somewhat despite the relative longevity afforded by their sheer amount of HP. Furthermore, they are crippled by subpar skill and speed, which combination with the low hit and high weight of axes gives Fighters among the worst accuracy and dodging abilities of any class. Fighters are very much oriented toward front-line combat, and provided they receive healing support from forts or a healing ally, they tend to survive well.
Originally in the NES Shadow Dragon and Mystery of the Emblem, Fighters are incapable of promotion, which was later rectified in the remakes of the games. As Alm's personal class in Gaiden, the Fighter promotes to Hero through an event in Chapter 4. Genealogy of the Holy War introduced the Warrior as the conventional Fighter's promoted class, which persisted throughout the rest of the series, save Thracia 776, in which Fighters instead promote to Mercenary. In The Sacred Stones and Awakening, which feature multiple class change options, Fighters have the choice of promoting to Warrior or Hero; additionally, in the former, Fighters themselves are a promotion option for the trainee Journeyman class. In Fates, they can instead promote to either Berserker or the new Brave Hero class.
