Durandal (デュランダル, Durandal), the "Blazing Blade" (烈火の剣, Blazing Sword), is one of the Divine Weapons of Elibe. Forged to combat dragons late in The Scouring, it was the chosen weapon of Roland, the Little Hero of the Eight Generals. Legend has it that after the war, Roland took the blade to his hometown, Ostia, and when he held it aloft, the scarred and barren war-torn land was suddenly rejuvenated with plants springing back to life[1]. At some point afterward, Roland sealed it away after the war in a lava cavern in the mountains of what would eventually become Ostia, under the vigilant watch of the lingering spirits of Georg and other warriors formerly in his service; as with all of the Divine Weapons, it was then placed under a strong seal inhibiting its use by Bramimond.

980 years after the Scouring, at the persuasion of Athos, Bramimond releases the seal on the Divine Weapons to permit Eliwood, Hector and Lyn to use them to defeat Nergal. The group travels to Durandal's resting place, where Eliwood conquers the guardian souls and Athos confers with the soul of Roland, who allows his distant descendant Eliwood to claim the sword Immediately after leaving the cave, the group is beset upon by an Ice Dragon seemingly appearing out of nowhere; the blade guides Eliwood's body and uses him to use it to slay the dragon, which as it dies reveals itself to be Ninian. Severely shaken at having killed Ninian, Eliwood gives the blade back to Athos for a while, feeling unable to wield it after his actions; Athos gives it back to him for the final fight with Nergal, and Eliwood uses it in that fight and against a dragon summoned by Nergal. Afterward, it is returned to its resting place in Ostia.

Twenty years later, after suppressing Legance's insurrection, Roy is taken to Durandal's cavern by Lilina, to claim the sword themselves before Bern's army could. The group arrives to find the cavern already claimed by a bandit group led by Henning which does not appear to be aware of Durandal's presence in the cave. Roy's group eliminates the bandit infestation and claims Durandal for themselves, using it against Bern's forces and the War Dragons found therein in the Disturbance of Bern.
