The name "deathgoyle" comes from gargoyles, grotesque, animal-like statues on the tops of buildings such as churches during the Middle Ages. They were meant to drain water from roofs and also to ward off evil spirits.<ref>http://www.stratis.demon.co.uk/gargoyles/gg-ety-hist-myth.htm</ref> "Deathgoyle" is a combination of this and the word "death".

The Deathgoyle (Japanese: デスガーゴイル, Deathgargoyle) class is a monster class that originates, and so far only appears in, Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones. Deathgoyles are a stronger version of the Gargoyle class, and can be considered a "promotion" of the gargoyle. They are flying reptilian monsters that use lances, and they have strengths and stats equivalent to promoted units, similar to the playable Falcoknight, Wyvern Knight, or Wyvern Lord classes.

Deathgoyles are quite formidable monsters. They have high strength, speed, and defense, and their ability to fly means that they can attack units from many sides, unhindered by terrain. However, since gargoyles are flying units, they are vulnerable to bows and the Wind Sword. Additionally, since they have low resistance, they are easily defeated by magic.
