A class is a certain property of any unit in the Fire Emblem series. Every unit, playable, enemy, or neutral, fits into some kind of class. A unit's class determines what weapons it can wield, often what stats it has, and many other miscellaneous attributes. Some classes are only found on the player's side, some only as enemies, and some only as neutral characters.

Most units can change class to another class after reaching certain requirements. Usually, a unit must go up to a certain level, such as 10 or 20, and use a special item. In Shadow Dragon and New Mystery of the Emblem, there is a Reclassing system that enables units to switch classes any time. Dismounting could, arguably, also be considered a type of class change.
