The Cavalier (ソシアルナイト, Socialknight) is a class of soldiers fighting on horseback. Cavaliers have appeared in every game in the Fire Emblem series to date except for Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, in which they are divided into the Sword Knight, Lance Knight, Axe Knight, and Bow Knight classes.
In Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem and Fire Emblem: Thracia 776, cavaliers and other mounted units could dismount in order to navigate certain terrain, enter buildings, and avoid weapons effective against units on horseback, such as horseslayers. When dismounting, they can only use swords. In the former game, they changed to an entirely different class, the Knight class, when dismounting.
Usually, they can use both swords and lances; the exception is Fire Emblem Gaiden, in which they can only use lances. The dismounting system of Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem allows them to use both, but lances can only be used when mounted; when they dismount, they can only use swords as the temporary Knight class. In Fire Emblem: Thracia 776, they can use both lances and swords when mounted, but when dismounted they only use swords.
Cavaliers have quite average stats, with no clear strengths or weaknesses. They are sturdy and strong, so they do well at the front of an army. In most games, they change class to Paladin. Fire Emblem Gaiden adds a third class-change stage beyond Paladin: the Gold Knight. In Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones, in addition to the Paladin option, they can also change to Great Knight.
