The Black Knight (Japanese: 漆黒の騎士 Blackknight) is the rival of Ike in FE9 and FE10. He is a free-lance knight who works for Ashnard, the king of Daein. He is a large knight shrouded in black armor, which is blessed by the goddess Ashera, making it impervious to all normal weapons. He also wields the Alondite, a powerful and indestructible blade. The Black Knight first appears when Ike finishes his training with his father, Greil. He becomes Ike's rival after Ike witnesses him killing his father. From then on, Ike has sworn revenge on the Black Knight.

During the course of the game, Ike is able to fight the Black Knight multiple times, but cannot defeat him without using Ragnell. Later on in the game, Ike and his sister Mist both confront the Black Knight. If Ike defeats the Black Knight, Nasir will join Ike's army. If Ike does not defeat the Black Knight, then Nasir will come and aid Ike, and Ena, the granddaughter of Nasir, will join. After both incidents, the castle will collapse, and the Black Knight will be buried in the rubble.

In FE10, the Black Knight helps Micaiah. He is eventually defeated by Ike when in the tower.

Role
The Black Knight first appears in Chapter 7: Shades of Evil, during the ending scenario. When Petrine's soldiers, having come to capture the Greil Mercenaries, are challenged by the forces of Gallia, he appears and orders Petrine's forces to withdraw, then stares down Greil before leaving.

Later, once the mercenaries reach one of Gallia's castles to await their permission to speak with the king, Greil leaves in the night to face down with the Black Knight one-on-one. Ike runs in mid-fight to support his father, who tells him to stay back. The Black Knight attempts to offer Greil the sword Ragnell, in the hopes of a fairer fight, but Greil refuses, brandishing his axe again. He rushes in, and the Black Knight quickly deals him a fatal wound by stabbing him through his sternum. The Black Knight then threatens to kill Ike as well if Greil does not reveal the location of Lehran's Medallion to him with his dying breath. Greil refuses, as Ike attempts in vain to defend himself. However, The Black Knight is interrupted by the roars of lion king Caineghis, and is forced to retreat, warping away from the scene, leaving Ragnell behind, and Greil to bleed out and die.

The Black Knight appears again in Chapter 11: Blood Runs Red, where he oversees the Daein subjugation of the port town from which Ike and his mercenaries are trying to sail from. He appears late on the battlefield, posing an existential threat to any who would get in his way. To buy Ike's group time, the Gallian warrior Ranulf fights the Black Knight, but is unable to land even a scratch on him. Though bruised and beaten, Ranulf succeeds, and the Black Knight makes it too late to the ship as it sails off with Ike and his company. Although he has the chance to bring the ship down, Sephiran appears and orders him to step down, which he promptly does.

From there, the Black Knight returns to King Ashnard, relaying him news regarding Ike and his band, through their spy aboard the ship. This spy is eventually revealed to be Nasir, who stole Lehran's Medallion from Mist and presented it to the Black Knight in Daein's capitol of Nevassa. The Black Knight orders Petrine to carry the medallion to Ashnard, and begins his next mission, to kidnap princess Leanne from Phoenicis. He does this by warping there and back using his warp powder, delivering the princess to Izuka.

The Black Knight appears on the scene again in Chapter 24: Battle Reunion, as Ike's army fights to save Geoffrey and his troops from the Daein occupation. Once the fight is over, Ike runs to attack his foe, but fails to land even a single dent in his armor. The Black Knight then eplains Ike's failure to him, that his armor was blessed by the goddess, allowing only similarly blessed weapons to damage it. He then claims victory without actually attacking Ike, telling him to bring the sacred sword Ragnell to their next encounter, lest he grow bored.

Ike finally shows down with the Black Knight in Chapter 27: Moment of Fate, having recovered Ragnell in secret from the day his father was slain. With Mist's help, Ike defeats him, and the castle they were fighting in crumbles with the Black Knight inside, ending his role in the story.

Role
Spoiler
Having presumably been killed in the events of Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, the Black Knight reappears without warning in Part 1, Chapter 9: One Survives, where he defends Micaiah from an ambush of Begnion occupational forces. He then appears before prince Pelleas and his troops, to rally them during the prince's speech to reclaim their capitol city and free Daein from Begnion's control. The Black Knight participates in the ensuing battle, cutting down anyone who gets in the way.

After Pelleas's coronation as King of Daein, the Black Knight disappears without a trace. Leaving Daein behind. He does not appear again until Part 3, Chapter 6: A Reason to Fight, where he once again appears to assist Micaiah against the Laguz Alliance. In the next chapter, Ike confronts the Black Knight again, who reveals that the blessing on his armor had been destroyed when he last fought Ike, but that he'd let Ike win in order to allow him to further grow as a swordsman. They are unable to finish their fight, however, and the Black Knight disappears again when the Laguz Alliance manages to slip by Daein's blockade.

The Black Knight does not appear again until Part 4, Chapter 3: Distortions, where he aids Micaiah's army against the Disciples of Order. He had come specifically to take Micaiah to the Tower of Guidance to meet his master, Prime Minister Sephiran, but Micaiah refuses, insisting on staying with her army. The Black Knight concedes this, and warps away after the battle is over.

His last appearance is in Part 4, Endgame: Rebirth (2). Here, he clashes one last time with Ike, separating the battlefield with a magic wall to allow him and Ike to have their one-on-one duel. Here, after Ike confronts him about his identity, he finally takes his helmet off, revealing himself to be General Zelgius. From there, they fight, and Ike finally defeats him. As he lay dying, the Black Knight congratulates Ike, commending his superb swordsmanship. Ike in turn, thanks him, for serving as his final teacher. Once he dies, Ike takes on his sword, Alondite, reuniting the two blades at last.

Skill set
Like all male bonus units in Awakening, the Black Knight has access to all base class and advanced class skills available to standard male units.

Personality and character
The Black Knight is defined by his mystery, always appearing encased in full armor, and not going by any formal name. His position as high general in Daein's army was due solely to his immense power and his chivalrous behavior toward Ashnard. When he appears, it is only to do the bidding of his master, and slay anyone who would get in the way. Nobody in Daein's army, not even Ashnard, knows what the Black Knight looks like under his armor.

Apart from his duty as a soldier, the Black Knight appears to care only about mastering the art of swordsmanship, having pursued and slain Ike's father Greil for the specific purpose of surpassing his former mentor. Due to Greil's surprising failure to put up a solid fight, the Black Knight waits instead for Ike to become strong enough to oppose him, in hopes of being able to fight someone who could be seen as equal to Greil in his glory days. Ike clashes with The Black Knight many times throughout both Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, and eventually slays him in the Tower of Guidance after learning the Black Knight's true identity. He ends up dying in peace, having known that he contributed to the perfection of swordplay, and served his master to the very end.
