Astrid first appears in Chapter 13, in which she is one of the passengers on a Begnion ship. Apostle Sanaki of Begnion is traveling on the same ship. The ship is attacked by beorc pirates and raven Laguz simultaneously, but Begnion's holy guard and the Greil Mercenaries, led by the commander Ike, arrive to help. Astrid is of noble birth, from House Damiell,[1] having hired Gatrie as a bodyguard.[2] However, she chooses to fight as a bow knight, since she has trained as a knight before.

Ike talks to Astrid, suggesting that she hide if she cannot fight. When she tells him she can battle, they decide to work together.[3] Then, she talks to Gatrie and tells him about Ike, which convinces him to join Ike's forces. After the chapter, both continue to travel with Ike. In a base conversation in Chapter 14, she states that she became a knight to take control of her own life.[4] Next, she says that she wants to become stronger.[5]

Astrid (A support with Makalov)
Astrid disregarded opposition and married the worst idler in three countries, but never tamed him.

Death quote

I...wanted... to live...more freely... Grandmother...
— Astrid in Path of Radiance.
I have no regrets... I've lived...as I desired... I chose...this fate...
— Astrid in Radiant Dawn.
I won't...be broken... Not yet...
— Astrid in Chapter 10 of Part 3.

Battle quotes

Path of Radiance

As a fellow citizen of Begnion, I find this situation deplorable. Repent now, if you like. Your time grows short.
— If chosen as reinforcement in Chapter 17.

Radiant Dawn

I am sorry as well, Sothe.
— Against Sothe in Part 3.
That would be throwing away my own beliefs to live a life of blind obedience. I stopped doing that three years ago, and I've never looked back.
— Against Hetzel.
Yes, I am. It's been a while, but I didn't think you'd forget me quite so easily. I wasn't sure at the time, but marrying you would have been the biggest mistake of my life.
— Against Lekain.
No, I am a knight of Crimea, here to fight you. Please forget about the past. The Lady Astrid you knew no longer exists.
— Against Levail.
No. Everyone's fine. Even if they're frozen solid, I'm going to save them. I have nothing at all to worry about.
— Against Sephiran.

  1. Begnion soldier: Y-you...You're one of the passengers from House Damiell, aren't you? I can't permit someone of your stature to throw herself into harm's way!
Astrid: I was once a knight of Begnion, albeit for only a short while...I won't get in your way.
  2. Gatrie: Oh, please! This is nothing. I'm fine!! Before I was hired as your bodyguard, I was a top-notch mercenary! I can handle this many opponents all by myself. This is nothing.
  3. Ike: Well, if you can fight, we can use you. Let's work together. You going to be all right with that?
Astrid: More so than I would be with hiding belowdecks, certainly.
  4. Ike: You're some noble house's daughter, are you not? What made you decide to become a knight?
Astrid: To escape my royal family... No, not to escape...but to confront it. I want my life to be my own.
  5. Astrid: I am still not satisfied. I may now be a knight, but my hands still shake when I draw my bowstring. So perhaps my goal was not simply to become a knight. Perhaps my true goal was to become stronger. Commander Ike, the others say that you never give up, no matter how bleak the fight. That seems like true strength to me. Please, allow me to continue fighting by your side. If I remain with you, I will grow stronger from your example.
